To wonder if these Bugsy Malone lines should be edited?

DS is playing the part of Smolsky in the school production of Bugsy Malone and has some lines to learn. Some of them are:

"You Irish potato head!"
"You dumb potato face Irish jerk!"
"I'm going to punch that stupid Irish nose right back to Tipperary"

Would it be unreasonable to suggest to the school that these lines could be construed as offensive and should be tweaked?

@Sashkin "At the point where you've taken the racism out, maybe?"

Well, surely the whole thing is racist, a stereotype of american gangsters?

Drabarni · 21/10/2019 16:46

I love the entitled attitude tbh. The school should change the words co OP doesn't like them.
She hasn't told them to find someone else whose mum isn't a bit weird.

Seriously? What’s ‘entitled’ about not wanting your child to learn lines in a school play that combine violent threats with ethnic slurs? Hmm

00100001 · 21/10/2019 21:28

But it’s to fine for kids to emulate gangsters and sing provocative songs?

SpinneyHill · 22/10/2019 02:28

Presumably the school will have shown the kids the film. You start messing with lines and they might ask why? at which point you have to explain the school play is actually terribly offensive and not because of the crime, simulated murder, pandering to paedophilia and racial stereotypes that your kids are probably enjoying acting out but because they said
"You Irish potato head!"
"You dumb potato face Irish jerk!"
"I'm going to punch that stupid Irish nose right back to Tipperary"

You either tell the school they can't use your son in this disgusting piece of filth or you look like a horses arse complaining about those lines and not mentioning the simulated murder, racial stereotyping, booze based paedophiliac paradise that is Bugsy Malone.

You must have known what it was, everyone has seen it.

I have watched Bugsy Malone approx 1000 times in my life and never felt the need to repeat any of the words in the playground.

PuppyMonkey · 22/10/2019 07:31

My primary school did Oliver and edited the entire Nancy murder storyline out. It is perfectly possible to change a play to suit the circumstances of the cast and audience.Confused

Yes, there's adapting. And there's censoring.

If you're censoring the irish racist elements, then you need to censor the Italian American racist elements...which is the majority of the play....

SorrowfulMystery · 22/10/2019 08:35

Indeed, @Puppy. I played Nancy at school a million years ago, and now I think ‘Who thought it was a good idea to have a fourteen year old girl singing about her undying love for her pimp who beats her up, and ends up killing her?’
