To think the acting in Harry Potter is just awful?

Not watched the films in ages and the third one was on tonight.

It honestly felt like some parts were like a drama class in school. Very cringe.

Yes, Daniel Radcliffe is so wooden, especially in the earlier films.

sorrythisusernameisinuse · 20/10/2019 21:17

I can't watch Ginny. She absolutely ruined her with that awful acting

InsertFunnyUsername · 20/10/2019 21:22

Harry Potter are awful films.

Frangipane · 20/10/2019 21:22

Well Michael Gambon, imo, is the most miscast of all the characters. I simply cannot understand how anyone who has read the books can think that his portrayal of Dumbledore is anything but a travesty. He utterly ruined the films for me, he doesn't look right or say a single line the way the book Dumbledore says it.

fitgirl26 · 20/10/2019 21:22

The “I’m a what?” comment has set me and my husband off on a “You’re a wizard Harry” recitation (google it) 😂

SachaStark · 20/10/2019 21:23

Yeah, they were properly shite. It’s always been a real disappointment to me, as I grew up with the Potter books, and I still read the entire series every year.

My view is that they churned them out very quickly (hence the shiftiness of the acting, script, direction, special effects, and so on...) because MONEY MONEY MONEY. And they were kind of rivalled against LOTR at the time, and they were obviously highly successful films.

I’m waiting for the day when they are reproduced as a high-quality television series.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 20/10/2019 21:23

Emma Watson must have an amazing agent or something, because she is dreadful in everything she’s been in.

I could understand if it was only the early films that she was shit in, but she hasn’t improved as she’s got older. She was out acted in Beauty and the Beast by the CGI dog/footstool.

Similar with Daniel Radcliffe. Apparently Jack Whitehall auditioned for the part of Harry Potter, who at least would have added a campy charm as opposed to DR’s wooden performance.

PastTippingPoint · 20/10/2019 21:23

I agree, they are spectacularly pants but I still love watching them! It's my Sunday afternoon guilty pleasure.

Agree with pp who said Ginny is the worst... The last scene in the final film where they're playing "grown up" versions of themselves is AWFUL! And DR crying in the earlier films 😂 Don't think I've ever seen such wooden acting.

I still think DR is wooden in every thing I've seen him in since. Seems like a genuinely lovely guy in interviews though which makes me feel the tiniest bit bad for him

Jinglejanglefish · 20/10/2019 21:25

Yes they're awful and I am a massive fan of the books, have been since I was about 7. The acting is awful, even from the famous, experienced actors. I think the scripting is really bad and even Alan rickman, Julie Walters, Gary Oldman etc don't seem to be able to pull it off.

Gary Oldman's 'i did my waiting in azkaban' speech is rubbish. 'HARRY DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLETOFFIREEEE' is awful, but it's the scripting and directing rather than acting imo.

BentNeckLady · 20/10/2019 21:26

I’d love to see them re made by nexflix. The films don’t do the books justice at all and yes, the acting is shit.

Howzaboutye · 20/10/2019 21:26

Has anyone been to the Harry potter thing in Watford?

As part of it there's Daniel Radcliffe's interview tape of his audition. It is really, really good. I can see why they cast him. But sadly that seems to have been a one off, as his acting in the film's isn't anything as good!

MrsToothyBitch · 20/10/2019 21:27

I always find EW rather forced (although she's incredibly accomplished). Bonnie Wright is also a bit wooden (but seems lovely). Agree that Rupert Grint & Neville are the best child actors in the early years - most consistent.

OnTopOfTheWardrobe · 20/10/2019 21:28

The best of the child actors was Rupert (Ron). It grates on me every time I watch that all the Weasleys have different accents, though! That said, all three seem to be normal, fairly well adjusted adults now- so they can't have been too traumatised by the franchise.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 20/10/2019 21:30

Oh god I just remembered how bad the Weasley Twins are.

“You call yourself our mother?”

When one of them died in the last film and everyone was all weepy, I was just glad there would be 50% fewer Weasley Twins going forward.

TheCanterburyWhales · 20/10/2019 21:32

I am currently listening to the books on Audible (have read them properly eleventy billion times) and, yes, the Weasleys one and all are used as weird and clunky plot devices to explain the wizarding world to Harry (=us)
James and Lily are rubbish too.

GooseFeather · 20/10/2019 21:32

The first three books are atrocious. I only ever read further because I was reading aloud to my dyslexic son.

And yes, the acting is equally abysmal.

Helendee · 20/10/2019 21:33

I have to disagree in the main, ok the acting in the first film was dodgy but I think that added to the charm, it really was like watching young kids being put into unfamiliar surroundings but they all improved immensely thereafter in my opinion.
Robbie Coltrane was fantastic as Hagrid and J.K. Rowling said he was perfection.
I love all things HP 🙂

LaurieMarlow · 20/10/2019 21:35

I agree that Bonnie is even worse than Emma (and that takes some doing).

I expect they cast her in about 5 minutes for a bit part in PS, then lived to regret it when she turned out to be relatively important to the plot.

They should have pulled a Game of Thrones and recast her.

OnTopOfTheWardrobe · 20/10/2019 21:36

Hagrid and the Scottish teacher (I can never spell her name!) were great. Gary Oldman/Lupin and Alan Rickman/Snape were right on the mark, too. I didn't like either Dumbledore much.

For me, the very best acting in the whole film was the scene were Mr. Diggory realised Cedric was dead. It gave me chills.

Pantalaimon88 · 20/10/2019 21:36

Genuinely baffled that anyone thinks Gambon was the perfect Dumbledore.

He didn’t have any of the gentle kindness, or bonkers whimsy that makes book Dumbledore such a special character. He was awful.

LaurieMarlow · 20/10/2019 21:36

When one of them died in the last film and everyone was all weepy, I was just glad there would be 50% fewer Weasley Twins going forward.

Grin
LaurieMarlow · 20/10/2019 21:37

Draco is reasonable. In fairness to him. And Luna.

Wizzbangpop · 20/10/2019 21:37

POA is my favourite and the acting does get better. PS and CoS are so cringe I can't watch them

thisnamechanger · 20/10/2019 21:41

I feel like DR got a bit better. EW ruined Hermione...she was just so angry and makes that frustrated "mmnnnrgh" sound no matter what she's saying. Total drama class. RG was decent to start with and also got better. Bonnie Wright I am completely convinced is related to someone involved with the movie...she is embarrassingly terrible. She literally just reads out the lines.

OnTopOfTheWardrobe · 20/10/2019 21:42

Draco really portrays the spoilt rich kid well. Luna could have easily been a comedy character but was actually pretty good.
The beauxbatons girls were awful too!
