To think the acting in Harry Potter is just awful?

Not watched the films in ages and the third one was on tonight.

It honestly felt like some parts were like a drama class in school. Very cringe.

Harry is terrible in them all.

The other kids kinda grow into themselves

Whitejasmine · 20/10/2019 20:45

I agree, only watched the first one and thought it was terrible film. My kids don’t like Harry Potter either - Daniel Radcliffe was also bad in the other film I saw him in “the woman in black” although I did quite enjoy that film. He is very wooden though.

CountFosco · 20/10/2019 20:46

So a child can not be good at acting simply because they are a child? Right ...

Which is better, Jane Austen's juvenilia or her novels written as an adult? Then tell me all the nobel prize winning children (no, not peace, the hard science ones). Then after that tell me all the successful child politicians, economists, engineers, social workers, teachers. Can't? That'll be because children aren't as good at stuff as adults. It's almost like they have to grow up to reach the peak of their abilities Hmm.

BertieBotts · 20/10/2019 20:50

I loved the books but the films are terrible. They aren't good as illustrations of the books because they miss too many important things. They aren't that great as films in their own right. I really don't get the hype for them at all. And I can't understand everyone going on about how Alan Rickman nailed Snape. He was totally and completely unlike how I imagined him from reading the books. Nowhere near sneery, sinewy or greasy enough.

PennyNotSoWise · 20/10/2019 20:53

Have to agree regarding the young three, bless 'em. I think they improved a tiny bit as they grew, but not much.

The adult cast are good though. I mean Snape, Dumbledore, Hagrid etc.

LaurieMarlow · 20/10/2019 20:55

Oh but Alan Rickman did nail Snape. He was perfect in every way.

For clarity, great child actors absolutely exist. But the 3 child stars of HP are not among them.

thisneverendingsummer · 20/10/2019 20:55

I think they're all quite good. Confused

Not a very nice thread. Sad

Confused

I thought the films were fab. Enjoyed all of them and thought the acting was great.

Also loved all of the books.

LaurieMarlow · 20/10/2019 20:57

Not a very nice thread

Do we have to say everyone is brilliant at everything now?

Rachel438 · 20/10/2019 20:57

Just me then Grin

Marinemarie · 20/10/2019 20:58

It’s the most overrated rubbish! YANBU!

Rachel438 · 20/10/2019 20:58

Thanks @neverending must have cross posted!

I never said people wouldn’t improve their skills with age and experience. Bit obvious to say Confused

A child can still be a good actor and give a believable performance.

Actually I am wrong. River Phoenix was shit in Stand by Me.

Well if it makes you feel better I don’t think Daniel or Emma are mumsnet users.

Perhaps you should go on YouTube and type in balloons and watch that instead if you’re too sensitive for this not very nice thread.

I think when people are paid to act in big budget films that they know will be high profile, people are allowed to critique their performance.

They aren’t children anymore.

PumpkinKing · 20/10/2019 21:06

I bloody love Harry Potter, but yes, the acting is fucking awful for the most part. My particular favourite, if you can call it that, is Emma Watson in the first one. "Iiiii'm Hermione Graaanger. And you are?" She over enunciates every. single. word.

Jason Isaacs is comical in Chamber of Secrets.

Mrsjayy · 20/10/2019 21:09

The only kid who could act was Ron and Neville they were consistant the rest is so overvacted bless them

DdraigGoch · 20/10/2019 21:09

Gambon was an awful Dumbledore.

LastSamurai · 20/10/2019 21:10

I like Daniel Radcliffe — I like his attempts to break away from HP by doing Equus and Martin McDonagh and musicals — but dear God, he’s pretty bad in HP, and Rupert Grint is frequently out-acted by the strange seventies vests some costume designer put him in for one of the later films.

Artus · 20/10/2019 21:10

I think the books are cliched and badly written too.

(Runs away and hides)

Mrsjayy · 20/10/2019 21:11

Emma watson acted like she was in elecution lessons till order of the pheonix which is my favourite!

Perpetuallyperplexed27 · 20/10/2019 21:12

I've never been an Emma Watson fan, I just find her quite bland. Not just in the Harry Potter films but in general. They do get better as they go on and I think Ralph Fiennes and Gambon were excellently cast.

Morgan12 · 20/10/2019 21:13

Haven't read the full thread but whoever said that child actors aren't as good as adult actors is wrong. Plain wrong. Because some are. Watch Stranger Things. Those kids are outstanding.

The kids in HP are shite. As are most of the adults. Robbie Coltrane is horrendous. Gary Oldman is pish. Helena BC is downright comical.

Read the books.

Morgan12 · 20/10/2019 21:13

Also Emma Watson acts with her eyebrows. She is terrible.

LaurieMarlow · 20/10/2019 21:15

I just want to say that I love Jason Isaacs.

There. Said it.
