... to be irritated by pet owners going on about fireworks given the impact that people having pets has on society and the environment?

It's just about time for the annual whingefest about people setting off fireworks to start and it's boring. If you own a domestic animal then your animal impacts on people around you all year round in terms of waste, meat production, safety, sanitation and noise. It also impacts on wildlife.

Given that, and given that no one is obliged to own another living creature, it's a bit much to expect all the other humans around you to refrain from doing something they enjoy because it might make your dog unhappy.

Tbh there are sound environmental reasons for opposition to fireworks but they don't do even half as much damage to wild creatures and their habitats as the average cat or dog, so that's a moot point anyway and obviously not of great concern to you otherwise you wouldn't own a dog.

So AIBU to say give it a rest?

IMO fireworks shouldnn't be for sale to the general public anyway.

Bit random Confused

SamBeckettslastleap · 19/10/2019 21:03

I completely agree and I own a firework scared dog.

Drpeppered · 19/10/2019 21:07

I don’t think general public should be allowed to buy fireworks as they are dangerous and a disturbance when not used correctly. Not because they scare my cat.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 19/10/2019 21:07

I agree Ginfordinner.

Don't own a dog but I live near a neighbourhood where the local kids thinks its great fun to aim fireworks at cars driving past.

You obviously don't like dogs but it's a bit of a reach to turn it into an ecological argument though Confused

TheRobinIsBobbingAlong · 19/10/2019 21:08

There are also a lot of parents of young children who don't like fireworks because the noise late at night keeps them awake. Also soldiers suffering PTSD who can't stand hearing loud bangs. Do they have a bad impact on society and the environment too? It's not only pet owners who complain.

I have a cat that doesn't care about firework. If it was just 5th November that would be an improvement but it goes on all month. Fireworks are antisocial and dangerous and should be confined to organised displays.

Picklypickles · 19/10/2019 21:11

Livestock and wildlife are just as affected by fireworks as domestic pets are.

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 19/10/2019 21:11

Totally agree. I'll be buying extra fireworks this year because the amount of people moaning about fireworks on social media really annoys me.

For us non animal lovers we have to put up put up with the irritations of other peoples animals all year round. I wish people didnt have cats and dogs as I find them really antisocial, but I accept that plenty of people love them so accept I need to be a bit tollerant of them. I wish firework haters would show a bit more of a live and let live approach too.

bengalcat · 19/10/2019 21:12

Disagree . Fireworks should not be sold to the general public . Have no problem with fireworks being set off on November 5th - problem is they’re usually set off a week either side . My Ddog is terrified of fireworks ( and thunder as it happens ) - cats not bothered .

1984isnow · 19/10/2019 21:12

My cats would be eating, shitting and doing whatever they do whether they were with me or not.

In the meantime, I've just seen yet another news report about a knobhead putting fireworks through a letter box and causing massive damage to the property.

I'm bracing myself for my living room to sound like a warzone in the next couple of weeks, when my neighbours decide to set them off 2 metres away from my house as they do every year.

It's not just about not scaring animals.

IfIKnewThenWhatIKnowNow · 19/10/2019 21:13

YABU to think it’s ok to let off fireworks at home. Agree with PP they are dangerous in the wrong hands and the general public should not be allowed to buy them.

Fizzypoo · 19/10/2019 21:15

I love fireworks, I think theres something magical about having a bonfire and a few fireworks at home in the garden as well as going to a display.

Not everyone who buys fireworks for home are dicks.

IfIKnewThenWhatIKnowNow · 19/10/2019 21:15

@SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel so your logic is to buy more fireworks to piss off the people who don’t like them, but think they should be more tolerant of you ~ seems valid 🤦‍♀️

Ginfordinner · 19/10/2019 21:16

"Totally agree. I'll be buying extra fireworks this year because the amount of people moaning about fireworks on social media really annoys me."

Hmm
quincejamplease · 19/10/2019 21:16

Don't be such a dick.

It's possible for more than one thing to be an issue at a time. The environment is not some fucking trump card to shut up anyone raising an issue you disagree with.

Fireworks are a fucking nightmare for people with PTSD too. It's not whingeing to point that out.

UrsulaPandress · 19/10/2019 21:18

Sheesh.

What a tortuous argument.

And how anyone can describe themselves as a ‘non animal lover’ sends a shiver down my spine.

FamilyOfAliens · 19/10/2019 21:19

I wish people didnt have cats and dogs as I find them really antisocial

In what way can a cat or dog be anti-social? Surely that’s a human trait?

tabulahrasa · 19/10/2019 21:19

So your pro fireworks argument is basically, pets are bad for the environment so you don’t care if they’re scared by fireworks?

Well it’s not really a logical point is it...

Tellmetruth4 · 19/10/2019 21:19

Fireworks should not be on sale for domestic use at all in my opinion.

I’m guessing you realised yet another thread about how outraged you are that a dog looked at your child would be boring so well done on being creative and combining your anti-dog hate with a festive theme.

turnthebiglightoff · 19/10/2019 21:21

I own a baby who is currently crying as someone is having a display in their garden. The baby is ill, as am I, and we both should be asleep.

Fuck the twats who let fireworks off in their gardens without informing their neighbours. Double fuck the twats who let them off in the street. Death to those who throw them at other people.

HTH

ChicCroissant · 19/10/2019 21:21

I do find it annoying when dog owners complain about the noise of fireworks when I hear dogs barking every day of the year, but it's a tradition on MN to have these kind of threads at this time of year!

june2007 · 19/10/2019 21:23

I actually think organised dislays can be worse as they are actually longer and louder then most home fireworks. SAver perhaps but not that save if someone has a sparkler in acrowd or the the poeple stand too close to the fire. I have been to a few organised ones with dubiouse safety and think sometimes a home party can be better.

TheRedFox · 19/10/2019 21:23

Such a random illogical argument.

So you care more about setting off fireworks for fun than you do about animals that may be scared or harmed by them?

Nice.
