To expect washing machines to last longer?

I seem to go through washing machines every three years or so - granted it's used at least once a day every day. I've tried mid price and pricier options but they die at roughly the same rate. How long is a reasonable life to expect from my washing machine ?

I don't understand how so many people are washing more than once a day? ...Do consider the environment please

We could only afford a smallish machine and we have a load of nappies a day. What with a couple of coloured loads a week, 1 white, 1 towels, 1 sheets, it’s on twice a day most days.

How did you wash reusable nappies without lots of extra loads of washing? Obviously you didn’t use disposable, given you’re in a position to lecture others about the environment?! Grin

Blackbear19 · 20/10/2019 22:01

It's easy for many families to be doing more than 7 loads per week. I'm 3 loads of clothes, 2 loads of towels and 2 loads of bedding.

My kids are only small but I can only imagine that as they and their clothes get bigger so will my washing pile!

IncrediblySadToo · 20/10/2019 22:28

@Doobedodoo. You don’t happen to work for Siemens do you 🙄🤣

@damekindness I have an LG Direct Drive - it’s 10 years old (& touch wood) never had a single problem with it. I’m putting in a new kitchen and because the layout is being changed I need to put in an inbuilt wm. unfortunately LG don’t do them, I’m gutted and I’ll be very sorry to see mine go 😢. IF it’ll work in the gap I’ll keep her until she passes naturally.

LG Direct Drive - you wont regret it (it was about £420 20 years ago)

My Aunty’s Miele must be cracking on 30 years old, (used daily) but I’m not sure they’re still as good now or worth the cost.

But unless you’re washing unbalanced loads (like blankets or trainers) then 3 years is ridiculous!

SlipperyLizard · 20/10/2019 22:37

Our Bosch washing machine is 11 years old and we’re just about to replace the brushes for the second time, other than that it works fine. Probably do 6-7 loads a week.

Our Bosch dishwasher, however, broke just outside its 2 year warranty - and would have cost £150 to repair as the part it needed can only be replaced by a Bosch mechanic. Not impressed!

DramaAlpaca · 20/10/2019 22:37

My 15 year old machine is a Siemens, a basic model which does everything I need it to. They aren't quite as expensive as Miele, but they are good.

Sewingbea · 20/10/2019 22:45

My last Meile lasted for fourteen years with no problems, including washing cloth nappies for two children. Bought a replacement Meile and hoping that it will be as good as the last!

user1494670108 · 20/10/2019 22:57

My Miele is over 12 years old with pretty much daily use and no problems with it at all.
Before that I had a cheap Indesit that also lasted for about a decade - we left it behind when we moved house.
I can only think it's your water

falcon5 · 20/10/2019 23:03

Miele. 7 years. Countryside. Tons of washing .

Iflyaway · 20/10/2019 23:05

I have an LG and it's 19 years old. Never had a problem with it. It has lately sounded like an aeroplane taking off during the spin cycle.

What's this about brushes? Not a clue what you mean....

EagleSqueak · 21/10/2019 06:08

Another one here who won’t buy another Bosch. The last one lasted over 19 years, moved countries 4 times while our three kids were growing up. It was indestructible, We’ve had the current one for five years and is useless (sticks on 1 minute and just swishes round and round until we put it on a rinse cycle - takes hours to get all the washing done). Repairman says it’s not worth repairing, so we’re waiting until we move house in 6 weeks when we’ll buy a new, non Bosch one. It’s a shame - we’ve been faithful Bosch customers for the last 25 years. I’d rather buy a cheap one if it’s not going to last more than 5 years!
Recommendations for 7kg + washer with small wash option welcome, please!

IncrediblySadToo · 21/10/2019 07:41

@EagleSqueak. If it’s freestanding.
LG Direct Drive. I’m deeply annoyed they don’t do an integrated version and I’m going to try to make mine fit in the space and not put an integrated one in until it dies naturally (it might stick out too much in the only place it can go and if it does it’ll be too close to the oven (kitchen is awkward with several doors going off it and other things and the new fridge freezer has to go where the washing machine is now (current fridge is under counter and no freezer).

Gotthetshirt23 · 21/10/2019 08:03

Washing machines live longer with calgon
Sorry Hmm that's now in my head after thread title .

EagleSqueak · 21/10/2019 10:41

Thanks incredibly, I’ll have a look at those and see if they’re available here (Australia). My parents have an LG which sings a little song at the end of the cycle 😁 - much nicer than the incessant beeping my Bosch does.

Doobedodoo · 21/10/2019 10:53

@incrediblysadtoo nope, just like the people who recommend Miele don't work for Miele, the people who recommend Bosch don't work for Bosch and the people who work for beko don't work for beko 🤪

IncrediblySadToo to LittleNightmare name change

MissConductUS · 21/10/2019 20:38

Three years is awful. My first Miele lasted 19 years of daily use with all the dirty laundry two kids can generate and my second Miele is now at six years without a problem.

PickAChew · 21/10/2019 20:49

I don't understand how so many people are washing more than once a day? Do you all have 6 kids or something?

No. I have 2, both autistic teens. DS2 has got through 4 pairs of joggers, today. 3 of them soaked in piss or tainted with shit, one just stained with drool and food. At least he hasn't pissed on his bed, today, woofuckinghoo.

I'll be pleased if I get 3 years out of our washer. Our 3 year old dryer is becoming slow and useless, mind.

EagleSqueak · 21/10/2019 23:20

Littlenightmare, I think I’ll have to stick with a front loader - the dryer has to go on top of it and there’s no room in our new laundry for a top loader.
Having our Fisher and Paykel fridge in the uk was a bit of a pain when I needed someone to fix it. It’s back home now though!

@EagleSqueak oh that’s a shame! But I’d go for a good NZ/Aus brand or ask locally rather than recommendations from the UK/Europe as they might be far more expensive to repair. Mind you, when I lived there you could really get a lot other than F&P - anything! 🤣

EagleSqueak · 22/10/2019 23:37

Thanks spookily. 20 years ago European white good were pretty rare (and front loaders were like hens teeth), but it seems that all new houses are now fitted with Miele, Bosch, Neff, AEG.. I was surprised to see it really - they used to be all F&P, and Simpson!
I’ll do some local research before I commit.

Gingerkittykat · 23/10/2019 00:02

My first washing machine lasted 15 years, it was the cheapest model at the time and I'm sure cost around £300.

My last two have lasted for three years each. The last one was a washer drier that broke just after the three year warranty. I had two repairs to it and then it broke down a third time, the repairs had cost around £200 and I wasn't throwing more money at it.

It's good to hear some of the makes that have lasted. My current one is three years old now but hopefully has more life left.

SpookilyBadOooooooh · 23/10/2019 12:50

@EagleSqueak. Big changes! I’ve been back in the UK 15 years now and it was a while before that I had bought appliances 🤣

LG Direct Drive (read about the technology, it makes sense! And mine came with a 10 year warranty.
