To expect washing machines to last longer?

I seem to go through washing machines every three years or so - granted it's used at least once a day every day. I've tried mid price and pricier options but they die at roughly the same rate. How long is a reasonable life to expect from my washing machine ?

@Stressedout10 my normal 2-3 loads a day how the actual? Do you have 12 children?
I cannot see 2-3 loads a day as normal for anyone!

AJPTaylor · 19/10/2019 20:50

I buy beko. No more than 250. Last a good 4 years. I am a heavy user

LadySlipper · 19/10/2019 20:51

I'm in my 3rd washing machine in nearly 30 years. First one was a Zambezi which lasted 17 years, and now on my second Bosch. They pretty much go all day both days of the weekend these days but went nearly every day when my kids were growing up.

antwacky · 19/10/2019 21:00

I've had four Hotpoint washing machines since 1980, the last one was purchased in 2011. We have a maintenance contract on this one but the three previous my OH kept them up and running

BMW6 · 19/10/2019 21:12

Further to my post above at 20.01.20 I have had by Bosch slimline for over 10 years now, not a single repair required.
I use about 4 times pw.

Ariela · 19/10/2019 22:26

My Miele is 20 years old.

Ginfordinner · 19/10/2019 23:36

Our first washer was a Zanussi, and lasted for 20 years. The Bosch that was already in our kitchen when we moved in 16 years ago is still going strong. Three years use is pretty poor IMO.

TheSerenDipitY · 19/10/2019 23:58

my hoover died after 23 years, i hated it and it used to unbalance on every fucken load but it wouldnt bloody die, when the water intakes failed i finely got to get a new one ( i guess i could have fixed it but i hated it so much i let it die)

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 20/10/2019 00:03

I have a Bosch Logixx, 15 years old and still going strong. It replaced a Hotpoint Liberator, inherited from my parents when they moved house, which was over twenty years old. I never had the machine in daily use though, even with three DC at home. Three years sounds pretty poor even with heavy use.

Cherrysoup · 20/10/2019 00:06

Is it a Hotpoint? I’ve had 2 stop working within a year. Something to do with the inlet valve.

RoseMartha · 20/10/2019 00:19

A Bosch here, it was at cheaper end of the range it is 15 years old used three to five times a week. Hard water area. I keep waiting for it to die.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 20/10/2019 07:47

I don't understand how so many people are washing more than once a day? Do you all have 6 kids or something?

Do consider the environment please. Is everything you are washing actually dirty, or could anything be worn again? Sports kit might get muddy but it isn't usually bulky.

Towels do not need washing daily PLEASE don't waste the planet's resources on that.

We have an LG. I wash 5 loads of clothes a fortnight (one coloured, one dark each week plus an extra load not every week) and 1 load of towels per week. Bedding every other week my machine weighs the washing and adjusts the cycle to reduce waste. 4 years going strong.

NewNameIsNew · 20/10/2019 07:55

My hoover machine lasted 8 years of abuse. Overloading, run at least once a day, very very rare descaling etc.

We replaced the brushes twice after about 3 years each but the cost was minimal.

TinkysWinky · 20/10/2019 08:14

We moved out of rented 6 years ago and bought an indesit (thankfully with insurance, as it kept breaking down every few months due to a fault with the on board computer -) - eventually the insurance replaced it, gave us a choice from a list and we chose a whirlpool 3 years ago. It is also having problems (leaking, then one of the suspension springs snapped and it shuddered its way across the utility room, then (our fault this time) a metal ball bearing from the kids magnetic set somehow managed to get between the drum and its casing. Thankfully DH has managed to save it all 3 times so hasnt cost any extra - hes gotten rather good at washing machine repairs at this stage! We didnt keep on the D&G insurance as I was annoyed - the Engineer who came out multiple times told me they shouldnt have pushed it on us for the first year as should have been covered anyway.

My next purchase will be a miele

ThePolishWombat · 20/10/2019 08:17

This is why we now rent our washing machine. We pay something silly like £12 a month and get all maintenance and repairs included in that price, and get a new machine every 3 years if we want one. (There’s nothing wrong with ours so we haven’t taken them up on the offer of a new one yet though)

SleepyKat · 20/10/2019 08:18

I had an index it one which lasted 5 years.
A hoover or possibly hotpoint which lasted about 8 years apart from needing the LED instruction/control panel replacing but I hold my hands up I left it switched on 24/7.
Now on a Samsung which is 5yo and going strong.

SleepyKat · 20/10/2019 08:19

Indesit not index!

EleanorReally · 20/10/2019 08:20

i always buy the cheapest, be it hoover, hotpoint or indesit, and i think 3 years is the length they last

Gennz18 · 20/10/2019 08:22

Three years!! Ours is 10 years old, needed something replaced a year or so ago (I want to say bands of some sort- can’t remember) and has been fine since. It’s a Fisher & Paykel (NZ brand), we do at least one wash a day and some days 3-4.

Bigregrets19 · 20/10/2019 08:26

I do 2 loads min a day.
DH uniform is oily and greasy so after has to have an empty wash. ( wiping round doesn't work)
I've had a new one every 2 yrs but don't pay much now for them For that reason

mildshock · 20/10/2019 08:37

I'm coveting a Miele professional. They're in 12 of the houses I work in and used 10+ times a day. Some of them haven't even been repaired since the homes were set up 8 years ago.

Whathappenedtothelego · 20/10/2019 08:51

Ours is coming up to 8 years old, so I am preparing to have to replace this year or next - it's a Bosch, and I would get the same again.

It has coped with several house moves, cloth nappies and extremely hard water, so it doesn't owe me anything.
I try to look after it - Limescale tablets and a magnetic water softener ball thing in every wash, only use powder, never liquid, clean it out regularly and always leave the door and drawer open, don't overfill.

It was sounding like Concorde taking off earlier this year, but seems to have recovered. Fingers crossed.

I think 7 years+ is reasonably good going these days. I'd be very annoyed at under 4, and would expect 6.

Shmithecat2 · 20/10/2019 08:55

I bought an LG direct drive 9 years ago and it's still going strong, never needed a repair. Gets used daily.

Blackbear19 · 20/10/2019 08:56

Hotpoints were good in the '80s but quality seems to have gone. My parents had one that lasted 10+ years, then replaced it with another that only lasted 5 years and needed repairs in that time.
Repair man said go for an AEG which she did, it was 18 years old before it was replaced, with another AEG. I was looking for a new machine around the same time and also went for AEG both machines are 8 years old with no hassles.

ThisYearHasGotToBeBetter · 20/10/2019 09:01

3 children, dogs, lots of sports kit and muddy walks. (have had live in nannies and au pairs too and lots of visiting friends) so it gets lots of use. Likely 10 plus loads a week. More in holidays.
Still going strong after 13 years.

It's a Miele.
