to give in and get a smart phone?

I just had to ask my boss to phone me back in the middle of a really difficult conversation because I still use a payasyougo 'dumb' phone and ran out of credit... Blush

I don't have a smart phone, nor does DH or DD, mostly because we fear getting sucked in to 24/7 tech use. That and I don't have an earthly idea how to engage with it all now its all so bloody complicated.

BUT - the other day I couldn't check into a flight before getting to the airport because the only option to do so was via their app....I also couldn't pay a taxi recently because they stopped taking cards in favour of phone transactions....many electric car points require a phone....

Its time to give in isn't it?

I have a Motorola Google phone from Argos, which cost about £150. I have a monthly rolling contract with ID mobile for £5 a month. This gives 4 hours of free calls, about 200 texts and 1GB of data. Ideal for a first smart phone.

No need to visit a phone shop. Íf you want to research then check out cnet.com or techradar.com.

I second going to CPW. I've found them very helpful and not pressuring at all.

I'm also very surprised that your teenage(?) DD doesn't want a smartphone. Join us!

crikey. Lots more info - thank you everyone!

My DD is 8 yo, but she is home educated, so no need for tech for school. My parents have smart phones...we just haven't ever gotten into it.

The most I've spent on a phone is 20 quid!

...and maybe another 10 quid per year on PAYG.

Money isn't an issue to be fair - just pointing out how other worldly all this is to me.

Someone mentioned it being like TV, but we dont have TV either.

I realise all of this makes me sound like a total cave dweller - which isn't really true. I'm a scientist, work in a uni and can code in multiple different types of language, and get on fine with computers. I just don't do phones.....

Dh retires in December and whilst he has a smartphone for work, he won't be bothering once he stops work. We have several dumb phones about, so he will be using one of those.

I don't and won't have a smartphone as I don't see the need for one.

I exited my Nokia comfort zone earlier this year and got a PAYG Smartphone.

I wish I had done it earlier. For some daft reason I was terrified of having a Smartphone as I am not very techy and thought I wouldn't know how to work it.

Although my phone is PAYG I get a Big Value Bundle which is suitable for what I need.

Glad to hear from someone who's survived a recent transition :)
