Miracle cure for conjunctivitis?

musicalkitten · 17/10/2019 16:30

I'm on a cruise, my eye is killing me was red and gunky. I've washed my eye out and got these eye drops from medical that have taken away the redness but nothing else. I don't want this to ruin the last of my holiday. Any quick fixes? Currently sat with cold compress over it. Please help, there must be a miracle cure out there somewhere that can be done in the middle of the ocean Sad

Any bf ladies on there??

Clangus00 · 17/10/2019 16:32

Cooled boiled water with salt dissolved in.

Clangus00 · 17/10/2019 16:33

Or see the onboard medics.

Areyoufree · 17/10/2019 16:35

Are the eyedrops antibiotic? That's the only thing I've found that gets rid of conjunctivitis for sure. They will take a day or so though. My kids both went through a phase of it, and none of the home remedies worked.

formerbabe · 17/10/2019 16:37

Regular cleaning with cooled boiled water...my friend swears by cooled black tea.

Bubblysqueak · 17/10/2019 16:51

Cold tea bags help with the itching and soreness.

Tcga745 · 17/10/2019 17:25

Bicarbonate of soda....1tsp in 1/4 pints of boiled (cooled) water. Wash your eye with it regularly.
It will go in no time.
Whenever I feel conjunctivitis coming on I do this and haven’t had it now for 15+ years (used to get it regularly)

Caxx · 17/10/2019 17:26

Teabags

Skyejuly · 17/10/2019 17:29

Go to chemist on board

Allsizes8to14 · 17/10/2019 17:36

Usually conjunctivitis is itchy/uncomfortable etc but shouldn't be painful. If it's painful I'd go back to the medic, especially if the vision in that eye is blurred or more sensitive to light than normal (I'm an optometrist!) Otherwise drops and bathing with boiled/cooked water the best options

PrettyTricky · 17/10/2019 17:36

Assuming you've been given either chloramphenicol drops or fusidic acid cream? Either of those will work but will take a day or so.

Stting bathing it or putting something on it will not help at this point and may irritate it further. Wash your eye with cool boiled water twice or three times a day and then just leave it. Faffing with it will only risk further irrigation and possible Corneal abrasion. Try to take your mind off it.

Importantly, don't infect the other eye. Hand washing and don't use the same cloths etc on both eyes.

Hope you're better soon.

Allsizes8to14 · 17/10/2019 17:38
  • cooled not cooked!!
PrettyTricky · 17/10/2019 17:38

Agee with above, it shouldn't be agony. Light sensitivity or increased pain is a cause to go back to the onboard doctor.

musicalkitten · 17/10/2019 17:56

Sorry I might of been a bit dramatic with 'killing me' Blush itchy uncomfortable like something's constantly in your eye etc
Pretty sure it's normal pink eye
Thank you for all the suggestions
At least I didn't get d&v I guess (tough wood)
Silver lining and all that Grin

Or scabies! I heard of one ship that had a major outbreak of scabies once. (I used to work on cruise ships).

Dogdogcat · 17/10/2019 18:30

A doctor once told me tea bags, something to do with the tanic acid. It was a very mild case, but they did seem to help.

TheFaerieQueene · 17/10/2019 18:32

Just go to the bar and have 🍸🍾🥂. You won’t care then!

CastleCrasher · 17/10/2019 18:33

Fastest cure I've ever seen is breast milk. Probably not very helpful in this situation though! BlushGrin

britnay · 17/10/2019 18:41

TBH it tends to clear itself up in about 5 days on its own. The drops don't make it heal much quicker, they maybe make it a bit more comfortable.

TooManyWIPs · 17/10/2019 19:05

Do you have any other symptoms? And/or had a bad head cold recently? Only ask as I was misdiagnosed with conjunctivitis, I actually had rhinitis. My eyes were streaming and painful, especially in the light.
1st gp said conjunctivitis, prescribed the antibiotic eye-drops, it initially cleared up after a few days, then got same symptoms a few weeks later, saw different gp he said no not conjunctivitis it's rhinitis & prescribed antihistamines. 2nd gp said conjunctivitis was a common misdiagnosis.

AllTheProsecco · 17/10/2019 19:07

I would also try and get hold of some antihistamines. I get allergic conjunctivitis very very occasionally. Something to do with mushroom spores the dr who treated me on holiday in the same place 3 years running said.

musicalkitten · 19/10/2019 12:51

Bit of an update
Currently sat at hospital waiting to go in I'm next to blind in my left eye very bad vision and I'm freaking out
This is normal for bad conjunctivitis right?

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 19/10/2019 13:02

Umm no, not really. Glad you're getting care.

musicalkitten · 19/10/2019 13:27

Been seen and now waiting for an eye doctor to use a machine to look in my eyes
Thinking at this point I'd rather of had D&V

Chamomile tea. A dr told me and it does work.
