Hi all,
New to this and at my whits end ! I have large flys in my bathroom around 20 odd there just sitting on window, doppy and slow moving. Can anyone tell me what sort of fly this could be? There’s no bad smell as if something is rotten and there only in my bathroom.
Mum of 2 :)

@Lassy30

The sad thing is that in UK the fly sprays are now "natural" and not very effective. You can get fly-deadly ones in continental builders merchants should you ever be able to visit in future

Justaboy · 17/10/2019 17:27

Just use the vacumm cleanr to such them all up, thats how i got rid of some:)

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 17/10/2019 17:27

Just biuy a fly swatter if you’re that bothered. Job done.

Glitterypumkin · 17/10/2019 17:28

The only time I had this was a dead mouse

Either cluster flies as a post says all you have a dead rat under the floor.
cluster flies are harmless and overwinter in cool rooms, attics etc. Colect in a jar and put them outside, they sometime get in through air-vents.

Notodontidae · 17/10/2019 18:04

you dont need fly sticky tape, a vacuum cleaner will do it, then throw them outside.

Wallywobbles · 17/10/2019 20:36

Fuck we can never get rid of the cluster flies. Always bloody around. We need some absolutely freezing weather to kill off the nest/source of them.

thenightsky · 18/10/2019 12:12

I'm in a new build that has those ceiling lights that are inset halogen bulbs. I could hear buzzing when I switched the lights in the bedroom on and I found that cluster flies were squeezing themselves around the bulb and into the room from the loft space! Cheeky fuckers!

userxx · 18/10/2019 13:28

@supercee Try pouring some bleach down the plug holes leave the plugs in the bath and sink and see if that helps. Think that worked for my friend.

supercee · 18/10/2019 16:36

Thanks @userxx I've poured bleach down before but never thought to leave the plugs in. Will try it.

They sound like cluster flies. We have had them too, at the same time of year for around three years. Luckily they were only in the bathroom so we could close the door and contain them. Other than that we plugged up gaps in the bath panel with paper after spraying copiously with fly killer and just waited it out. Touch wood they haven't returned in recent years.

ThreeLittleDots · 18/10/2019 16:50

We have cluster flies some days in the autumn. I sprayed Raid inside the window air vents and around where the windows open - I think it hangs around on surfaces - killed them all on approach!

If they find a way into a house they leave a chemical 'marker' to tell their mates "come in - this way" so stopping that flow is key.

It's not because your house is dirty at all, they're just a nuisance and will die off / hibernate somewhere when the weather gets a little colder.

Moth fly also known as drain fly coming through the overflow holes or Bath plug
