Hi all,
New to this and at my whits end ! I have large flys in my bathroom around 20 odd there just sitting on window, doppy and slow moving. Can anyone tell me what sort of fly this could be? There’s no bad smell as if something is rotten and there only in my bathroom.
Mum of 2 :)

Yes that seems to be exactly what they are doing just hanging around to die. I’ve called pest control and they have said if it’s cluster flys it’s unfortunate that it’s that time of year for them and I shouldn’t be too concerned unless there is a vile smell or we come across any dead carcasses. Lucky enough my dog would sniff something bad out in a heart beat well I hope he would haha

They only appeared yesterday so I’m still learning about the buggers argh there so annoying!

There is a dead body somewhere but I know not of what nor where.

It is in the bathroom beyond the sink behind a wall hiding in the dark depths where man can not go.

Sorry, can’t gelp.

saj90 · 17/10/2019 16:06

@supercee we had this problem for a while, do you have any indoor plants? We had small tree - Dragon plant?! - and as soon as we got rid of it, so did all the tiny flies.

AutumnalLeaves38 · 17/10/2019 16:11

darkclouds,

Harsh!

userxx · 17/10/2019 16:13

@supercee Drain flies. They like the damp, annoying little fuckers.

chancey · 17/10/2019 16:18

They sound like cluster flies - we have them every Autumn. Apparently they come into the house to hibernate. The only good thing is they lay eggs in dead leaves not rotting food. Still horrible things though!

DBML · 17/10/2019 16:20

We had this in our old house. I opened the window wide and the source was in the side of the window frame. Gross. There were hundreds clustered together. They are cluster flies. Once I cleaned them out from their spot, they never came back.

supercee · 17/10/2019 16:26

@saj90 I have a couple of plants in the living room but the flies have been there before the plants. No flies in the living room either.

@userxx Are there any ways to make my bathroom less damp?! I have my window permanently open, I wonder if closing it will make a difference to the wee fuckers (clutching at straws now).

I am wondering if it would be worth removing the bath panel (it's sealed in). Really scared of what's in there, despite no smell Confused

Hi I hope this helps. We were plagued by flies when we moved house 6 years ago. Every summer we could hear the usual buzz. This year I have discovered zoflora! I have been putting a cap full down the kitchen sink before going to bed. Plus putting it down the bath and wash basin plug hole. This together with fly stickers on the window seems to have got rid of them this year.

AshOutside · 17/10/2019 16:30

We had this the other week. So sympathies- it almost sent me mad hunting!
Scrubbed and bleached everywhere and couldn't understand where they were coming from. In the end we found them behind the fridge in a wrapped up bit of unused (new) carpet. Apparently they like wool?!
I'd just keep checking and clearing and keep some little bowls of apple cider vinegar on the sides. Good luck!

Dawninglory · 17/10/2019 16:33

Supercee, they sound like drain flies, use a drain cleaner once or twice should clear them out. They like living in the hair and grunge further down in the pipes.

Mseddy · 17/10/2019 16:33

We had this. Turned out one of my cats had turned one of our plant pots into a mass mouse graveyard. The flies went as soon as the bodies did!

Lassy30 · 17/10/2019 16:36

I’m a clean freak as it is this is gonna send me crazy 😩! I’m gonna try whatever I can to out these things !! How long do cluster flys last? Does anyone know

eddiemairswife · 17/10/2019 16:41

I had these on my kitchen window a couple of weeks ago. Sprayed them with fly spray and they died. I then had to remove bodies from window ledge.

TheGrandHighWitch · 17/10/2019 16:45

I've had this exact fly issue. Turned out to be caused by a dead rat underneath my bath. I do also have a mouse problem which I am dealing with by using traps rather than poison as when they eat poison, they often bugger off back to their safe space (in walls or under floors) before dying and subsequently causing further fly problems.

jazzandh · 17/10/2019 16:50

If they are cluster flies they aren't dirty in the same way that a blue bottle may be - they will be attracted to the window light - open the window and they will fly away by themselves.

Lassy30 · 17/10/2019 16:54

That’s the only place they are just on the window!! There so lazy! I will get partner to check bath panels when he finishes work, hopefully it’s nothing

LemonScentedStickyBat · 17/10/2019 16:56

Cluster flies - there won’t be any dead rats anywhere, this is just what cluster flies do! I gave up hoovering them up after less than a week and set off a smoke thing which worked well.

Bluntness100 · 17/10/2019 16:57

Just google cluster flies op, really just hoover them up, it's not a big deal

mumwon · 17/10/2019 16:59

peppermint oil which ants dislike too (desperation one night - me cutting open my colpermin capsules for ibs the ants invaded bathroom) washing up detergent & very hot water cleans drains quite well & ants don't like automatic powder either I have used it neat near my patio door)

Lassy30 · 17/10/2019 16:59

They don’t have a blue tint to them they look black with brown eyes quite big though

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 17/10/2019 17:00

Do you have a used tampon festering somewhere?

snottysystem · 17/10/2019 17:06

I had this, it was a dead mouse, I had noticed a smell a bit before but couldn't find anything so thought it was my imagination. Then a bit later flies appeared in the room, they just sat there doing nothing.

DogInATent · 17/10/2019 17:07

Cluster flies, perfectly normal this time of year. Nothing to panic or get in a fluster about. You don't need pest control, they'll disappear on their own. If you want to hurry them up a bit, the old-fashioned fly-paper strips are as effective as anything else.
