To think Britain should have got rid of the monarchy rather than their EU membership

Inspired by the dress up party that was the Queen's Speech last week. These are grown ups acting in a pantomine in very expensive dress up clothes that is costing a fortune and is very hard to take seriously.

Actually also inspired by the Downton Abbey movie which was a cring-inducing fest of cap doffing, and acknowledging that everyone is inferior to the King and Queen Shock.

I am not British so maybe the fact that I haven't been brain washed from birth to believe that these are superior beings who deserve to be fed and clothed and feted for doing very little makes a difference.

I appreciate the tourism argument (that they are good for it) but I maintain that the palaces being open to the public with costumes on display will be just as good if not better for tourism and the economy. I lived in central London for a decade and never saw the changing of the guard or visited Buckingham Palace. I worked near High street Kensington so was aware of Princess Diana and Princess Margaret but that was about the extent of the effect the monarchy had on my life.

I see the monarchy as belonging (very much so) in the past and a strong relationship with European neighbours being the future and so I think you have gone in the wrong direction lately.

That's nice dear.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 16/10/2019 14:47

I don't think we should get rid of them, economically they are good for the UK, but I wish they'd show some backbone and stand up to this government. The Queen is being made to look like an utter fool by being pulled along with this shit shower.

Velveteenfruitbowl · 16/10/2019 14:47

I think they both belong in the past. Probably because I am neither British nor any other kind of European.

Hoppinggreen · 16/10/2019 14:47

I don’t remember seeing that option on the referendum

Petrichor11 · 16/10/2019 14:51

The monarchy and Brexit are two entirely separate issues though.

There’s many things that I would rather get rid of than EU membership (all the senior Tories are definitely on the list).

Fraggling · 16/10/2019 14:51

I would expect to be areplican but actually I'm pretty meh. I just can't get excited about it one way or the other.

Having them does mean we don't have to have even more elections for a president and end up with a trump... President boris or farage for eg and not that much of a stretch these days.

I suspect setting up a replacement system would be v complicated and expensive and go on for years...

So yeah don't care.

V much feel part of europe though and gutted about brexit.

BillywilliamV · 16/10/2019 14:52

There is no either/or here. The two things are not related in any way.

mrsjg · 16/10/2019 14:55

If I had to choose between leaving the EU and getting rid of the monarchy, I would choose getting rid of the monarchy every time.

bellabasset · 16/10/2019 15:00

At the moment I'm still reeling from the chaos that the government set in motion with the vote to leave Europe

FaFoutis · 16/10/2019 15:02

YANBU

Inthemoment38 · 16/10/2019 15:06

Very good points. YANBU

YABU because I have never met or heard of anyone who has this opinion.

Also YABU because it has precisely 0 to do with Brexit.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/10/2019 15:09

The two arent related.

Love the queen

you can get rid of the house of lords if you want!

MockersthefeMANist · 16/10/2019 15:20

Queenie's Fab

(but some of her idiot kids and grandkids could do with a compulsory appointment at the Job Centre.)

SuzieBishop · 16/10/2019 15:43

😂

ColaFreezePop · 16/10/2019 15:49

I last had this discussion about a decade ago with people from other European countries. Quite a few of them could pointed out the cost of their corrupt Presidents.

Hopefully Charles will slim down the Royal Family to get rid of Andrew and his "delightful" daughters.

EagleVisionSquirrelWork · 16/10/2019 15:52

YANBU. Surprised the poll is so against you but it's not a very big sample yet, I suppose, and MN seems weirdly positive about the royal family, which I've never understood. I'm at the republican end of the spectrum but the clusterfuck of the Brexit referendum has severely shaken my belief in the good sense and natural justice of democracy and I confess to more affection at the moment for HM (tho not the rest of them) than I've felt for many decades. At least she has a bit of dignity, unlike the deranged Punch and Judy show of successive Conservative governments. I'm shocked to hear myself talking like this, though. God knows where it will all end.

Mookins14 · 16/10/2019 16:08

The relationship between the two here is because you have made a monumental decision to alter your course by leaving the EU. Surely such a huge decision might have been better placed on ridding yourself of the monarchy. A lot of Brexit arguments arguments I read centred around costs to the country. Well the costumes alone from the Queen's Speech pantomine are ££££'s. Not to mention trips to Pakistan, Africa, etc. So I suppose I was thinking well, if you wanted to cut costs, cut the monarchy, not your neighbouring relations!

FWIW I think Queen Elizabeth 2 is fabulous but the last of a kind. And such an abrupt difference between her and the next lot. I would really resent paying any of them a bean.

Whilst I accept you are entitled to your opinion, as you are not British I fail to see what the fuck it’s got to do with you.

Grasspigeons · 16/10/2019 16:13

I think proper democratic reform, removal of the monarchy, the established church and a good look at the rest of the established lords with their mega trust fund, bit of land reform might well have created a more equal society and some of the political change that was wanted. But im not sure anyone had the energy for all that.

derxa · 16/10/2019 16:18

SerendipityJane · 16/10/2019 16:18

The problem with asking questions like this of the public is most of them confuse tourism with constitutional provisions and gibber on about nice palaces and hats, without grasping that the Monarch has powers that they never faced election about, and which their successor will simply inherit without any oversight.

Personally I'd happily abolish the institution of the Monarchy as a constitutional actor, but if enough people are happy to pay tax to keep the Windsors in palaces and gin for life, then it's fair enough.

Inebriati · 16/10/2019 16:19

Was this ever an option?
