To think Britain should have got rid of the monarchy rather than their EU membership

Inspired by the dress up party that was the Queen's Speech last week. These are grown ups acting in a pantomine in very expensive dress up clothes that is costing a fortune and is very hard to take seriously.

Actually also inspired by the Downton Abbey movie which was a cring-inducing fest of cap doffing, and acknowledging that everyone is inferior to the King and Queen Shock.

I am not British so maybe the fact that I haven't been brain washed from birth to believe that these are superior beings who deserve to be fed and clothed and feted for doing very little makes a difference.

I appreciate the tourism argument (that they are good for it) but I maintain that the palaces being open to the public with costumes on display will be just as good if not better for tourism and the economy. I lived in central London for a decade and never saw the changing of the guard or visited Buckingham Palace. I worked near High street Kensington so was aware of Princess Diana and Princess Margaret but that was about the extent of the effect the monarchy had on my life.

I see the monarchy as belonging (very much so) in the past and a strong relationship with European neighbours being the future and so I think you have gone in the wrong direction lately.

You can have it back for me.

Not that simple, my love. You’re stuck with it until both sides are ready.

Actions, consequences, yada, yada.

araiwa · 16/10/2019 18:04

Can we abolish the conservative party?

Antigonads · 16/10/2019 18:05

But but but ....

LaurieMarlow · 16/10/2019 18:07

But but but

Great debating skillz. I’m in awe.

timshelthechoice · 16/10/2019 18:14

I'm British and would love to get rid of monarchy and abolish all hereditary titles. Load of embarrassingly outdated nonsense. Sick of paying even a penny for the 'royal' family, FFS.

The day before I was going she called me to say that she'd been thinking about it and she definitely didn't want me to pay for the stay but the bedding was a bit shabby and perhaps I could buy 2 single and 1 double duvets and covers instead of paying money. Not just the covers - three actual duvets as well as covers.

My bottle of (English) champagne is in the refrigerator waiting for 31 October - cheers!

Champagne has to come from the Champagne region in France or it's sparking wine. There's no such thing as English champagne - cheers.

Given the standard of politicians we are producing at the moment, Prince Charles looks pretty sane to me.

We might need them. Smile

timshelthechoice · 16/10/2019 18:15

Sorry, a piece of another post from another thread got in there.

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 16/10/2019 18:16

YANBU and I don't think it will be long until they've gone.

The twat in Pakistan dropped a howler today, having been helicoptered onto a glacier he made a speech in which he actually said there should be "more education and more awareness" of climate change. Maybe he could educate himself and make himself aware of how helicopters are powered.

The RF are so unpopular at the moment that they have to keep reminding us of DIana and are still trying to cash in on her popularity so many years after her death. It's all a bit desperate. There's a new book about how they are funded and how ridiculous it is that they are allowed to take 25% of the Crown Estate income and all their other misdeeds. Enough of them all.

FuzzyPuffling · 16/10/2019 18:19

Exactly what HeckyPeck said on page 1. I can't be bothered to read any further.

Idontwanttotalk · 16/10/2019 18:22

Well if we've all been so easily brainwashed over the monarchy I don't understand how we haven't all been brainwashed into wanting to stay in the EU. Any bright ideas OP?

Little minds are tamed and subdued but great minds rise above them.

Allycat1989 · 16/10/2019 18:23

We should get rid of them, it's absolute rubbish that they bring in more than they take and even if that was true there are much better ways to bring in money than letting these glorified benefit scroungers doss about in palaces. There are so many people living hand to mouth in the UK, myself included and it angers me when royalists say "oh but they do so much for the country and charity's etc, so do plenty of other people who get no recognition. I used to have a keyworker who was a volunteer at a youth drop in centre, she helped me more than anyone else, she would stay behind late to help me with stuff, she would come with me to appointments, one time when I was 15 and had been kicked out of my home, she took me home to her family and let me stay with her because social services had nowhere for me, honestly she was a diamond, she has helped so many kids over the years and has never been paid for it. It's not genuine charity of u are benefiting from it, like the royal family do, and they never help out in secret, its always a big pompous event, they don't deserve any of it. It makes me laugh the people that love the royals, coz the royals wouldn't p##s on them!

Nutjobby · 16/10/2019 18:23

YANBU and I sincerely hope they're gone within my lifetime.

Verily1 · 16/10/2019 18:25

I think there would be just as many tourists without there still being a monarchy.

The French has the right idea.

Samosaurus · 16/10/2019 18:25

@HappyHammy That’s all irrelevant though - lots of countries that no longer have monarchies still get lots of tourists visiting castles etc.

Shalom23 · 16/10/2019 18:29

The only benefit of having a queen is she could out stop to a dictator. That's it. The rest is nepotism and wrong on every moral ground. France has the most tourists of any country in the world. Look what they did to their monarchy. So tourism arguments are null.

Idontwanttotalk · 16/10/2019 18:30

"That’s all irrelevant though - lots of countries that no longer have monarchies still get lots of tourists visiting castles etc."
So, do you think the cost of maintaining castles for tourists to visit would be less if they didn't have royalty living in them?

fruitinaheapisnotabirthdaycake · 16/10/2019 18:33

Lol well it would certainly save us a lot of money as we would not have to find Posh people Universal credit and their travel, redecorating their posh homes etc.

Idontwanttotalk · 16/10/2019 18:37

And the current vote is:
52% YABU
48% YANBU
I'm sure I recognise those figures from somewhere. Grin

MsMD · 16/10/2019 18:44

Wellgonads, your country's decision to leave the EU is costing my country a fortune and is threatening a recession on my country, as well as civil unrest

I'm anti-Brexit and also not English. However here you're actually parroting one of the only reasons for Brexit that at least makes sense.

If the actions of one other country in the EU can cause this level of instability in another member country, maybe being that closely linked to begin with is not a good idea?

I am not British so maybe the fact that I haven't been brain washed from birth

Thinks the British don't care about anyone but themselves, then says ridiculous shit like this. I wonder why they don't care about you?

Samosaurus · 16/10/2019 18:58

@Idontwanttotalk not all all, how did you extract that from what I wrote? The point is you don’t need royalty living in castles for them to be attractive money making tourist destinations as can be seen in other countries.

Antigonads · 16/10/2019 19:01

What was that great programme on R4 with the repetitive punchline of ‘It’s because I’m Irish’?

LaurieMarlow · 16/10/2019 19:15

That’s a direct result of the GFA though (which the UK should have thought more carefully about) not the EU.

Mookins14 · 16/10/2019 19:17

Oh dear. This is England and Ireland. We were closely linked before the existence of the EU (newsflash!)

But it is a bizarre concept for the modern world. Do you actually believe that Elizabeth Windsor has a divine right to rule over you?

Gosh, you continue to blow me away with your wit and insight.

How do you do it?
