To go to Rhodes in August

Its a bit silly really but i mainly posted for traffic and im looking for reviews and advice really.

Its my first holiday abroad in 18 years, i have never been in a hot country with my children who will be age 10 and 13 when we go, hotel is a small basic beautiful hotel and for all inclusive including flights it will be less then £2,100 in Afandou.
We are not a busy family, happy to chill and stroll around but would also enjoy some historical culture.

Im terrified of making a mistake, its a lot of money which i can afford (as long as its in installments) but what if i get it wrong? Will it be too hot to cope?
The reviews on the hotel are great but i cant find many reviews on the area.

Any tips, advice and ideas?

It will be hot in August, more so at the start of the month. Only you can know if it will be too hot.
Just make sure there’s plenty to keep the kids entertained, it’s easy enough to say you’re happy to chill and stroll around but a 10 and 13 yo will more than likely get fed up very quickly.

19lottie82 · 14/10/2019 21:39

PS I wouldn’t let my previous post put you off! Just make sure it ticks all the boxes for you and the kids, I’m sure you’ll have a ball ☺️

We've been in August, it is hot so sight seeing would be hard work but perfect for sunbathing

Shallow07 · 14/10/2019 21:54

Rhodes is lovely but very hot in August- it's manageable with AC in your room and if you eat dinner a little later in the evening (after 7) once the sun is less intense and going down.

You won't be too far from Rhodes town for sightseeing. I would definitely recommend spending a late afternoon/evening in Lindos to see the sights there and eat at one of the beautiful rooftop restaurants- it is very crowded with cruise ship passengers and tours during the day. It's at its best past 6 pm ☺️

Chesntoots · 14/10/2019 21:59

I went to Rhodes a couple of years ago at the end of June. The weekend I flew home got to 42 degrees! It was far too hot for me but I really loved the place.

LtJudyHopps · 14/10/2019 22:03

Love Rhodes! It will be hot but if you can get up early and chill inside some AC for the hottest part you will be ok.
Don’t do a trip to Lindos it gets very hot. We went in late June and it got up to 40!
Eat out in Rhodes town at least once, absolutely love Greek food!

iknowimcoming · 14/10/2019 22:08

We went to Rhodes in August 2017 and 2018 (there was a heatwave in 2017 whilst we were there) and it was hot but still great - as long as you've got a decent pool I'd say go for it!

Stompythedinosaur · 14/10/2019 22:10

We had a lovely holiday in Rhodes a few years ago. It was easy to get about and lots of things to see and do. We stayed in Rhodes Town, which is beautiful (like a medieval town). We did day trips to Lindos, the watermark outside Faliraki and a boat trip to Symi, all of which were good. The food was very good!

Stompythedinosaur · 14/10/2019 22:10

Water park not watermark.

thecalmorchid · 14/10/2019 22:17

It's so very easy to burn badly in Rhodes. If you go you need to meticulously apply factor 30-50.

The cross island breezes make you think it's not as hot as it is. I burned badly.

mauvaisereputation · 14/10/2019 22:18

It would be on the hot side for me. I'd definitely want to stay somewhere with a pool. I guess you have to consider how you'd feel if it gets up to the mid 30s would you be happy getting up early for sightseeing then staying indoors in the heat of the day or would you find this annoying etc. Also, for sightseeing will you have a car or be relying on public transport?

userxx · 14/10/2019 22:27

I'm looking at Rhodes for next summer but have ruled august out as it will be too hot for me. Early June is more my kind of heat.

jennieflower · 14/10/2019 22:35

We went to Rhodes in August this year, myself, DS11 and DD 16, we stayed just outside Faliraki which is not far from where you’re looking at. It was really hot, we alternated a sightseeing day with a beach/pool day and we stopped for plenty of drinks in the shade regularly when we were out and about too.

I would only book a hotel with air conditioning in the room so that you have a cool base to go back to and you’ll really need the air con at night, our hotel room air con only operated whilst the key fob was slotted into place in the room so we took the key off the fob and left it in place for most of the week to keep it cool.

Rhodes is beautiful, it was my third holiday there but the first trip with the kids, they had an amazing time!

maddy68 · 14/10/2019 22:39

I go every year in August. It's hot but very bareable (as long as your room has Aircon. Sight see first thing or early evening when it's cooler everywhere is open late. It's lovely

littledrummergirl · 14/10/2019 22:43

We went to Rhodes a few years ago in August. It hit 43 degrees in the shade. We did a fair amount of walking but it was only dh and I. Public transport is great fun, I suggest you try this at least once but ensure you know the timings etc.
We were invited to a wedding, it was an amazing experience and we were made to feel very welcome by the local population.
I would love to go back one day.

Cluelessbeetroot · 14/10/2019 22:45

Depends what kind of hot is too hot for you. My ideal temp is 21 or so degrees so July in Rhodes for me was a killer. I was ill with sunstroke after our trip to (albeit beautiful) Lindos - and I am one of those irritating people who is never ill.
DP on the other hand loved it but he is a proper sun worshipper.
Rhodes town is lovely. Great food and nice but pebbles beaches.
As Greek islands go, it is quite touristy but there is a lot to do, more so than one of the small and maybe more idyllic Cyclades, so I’d say quite suitable for going to kids.
Oh and Faliraki is a shit Magaluf and that says a lot !!!

Cryalot2 · 14/10/2019 23:05

Have a great time.
Just back from a very hot Lanzarote. Our adult kids gave us good advice. Buy everyone a bottle that keeps drinks cold. We got from tescos. Fill up from a large water bottle. With each having theirbown and it keeping the water cool, more likely to drink enough.
Also a cheap spray mister and insect repellent bands

Namechange5101520 · 14/10/2019 23:11

Thanks everyone, room has air con, beautiful pool. I will be ok and so will my eldest but my youngest may not be as she gets hot very easily but i can imagine she will want to spend all her time in the pool anyway. Im going to see what she says and see if theres anywhere else she may want to go (this holiday is mainly for her as the eldest will have been to china with school so want to involve the youngest as much as possible)

We went to Afandou in July in 2017- there is not much to do for young children. It is a pebble beach quite a walk from the resort and the village itself is not the quintessential white and blue Greek island village.

Our teens could manage the walk to the beach ((where loungers and shades were not cheap but much needed due to pebbles) and the dusty trek in and out of town.

We took DDs to Faliraki as we wanted to show them where we'd danced on bars in the 90s Blush. It was grim all fish pedicures and fake designer shops. AI has ripped the heart and soul out as tourists don't venture from their hotels. Rhodes town was still beautiful but expensive. The water park was great for older kids but the courtesy buses jammed full to the point if dangerous.

What is your hotel called? Beware of separate air con charges - it will be essential in August.

EmpressJewel · 15/10/2019 08:52

We have been to Rhodes a few time with DC (aged 7 and 9). We spent a lot of time by the pool or at the beach, so it was easy to keep cool.

Slap on loads of sun protection, have lots of cool drinks and ice creams and keep out of the midday sun (lunch is a good opportunity to do so).

NoSauce · 15/10/2019 09:10

The biggest consideration would be the heat. I’ve been to Greece in August and it was extremely hot. I didn’t mind it though, I just stayed in the shade when it got too much, would your dc do that?

olivesnutsandcheese · 15/10/2019 09:23

Make sure you all have shoes that you can wear to the pool edge. The tiles/stones around it will be burning hot. Our DS who was 3 was very happy in reef shoes and just kept them on in the water. Rhodes is great, hope you have a lovely time

CheeryB · 15/10/2019 09:26

Way too hot for me. I just wilted for a week.

AuntieMarys · 15/10/2019 09:26

We were in Lindos first week of June and it was 35 degrees.
We are returning in 2020 but early May.

RedRedWhining · 15/10/2019 09:37

We went to Lindos in September. It was 35 degrees and way too hot for me. We spent a lot of time in the pool. A family friend went in August. She is a COMPLETE sun worshipper, the kind of person that spends every waking second in the beach topping up her tan and even she said it was unbearable and a waitress in the hotel said she hates August as it is too hot to go outside! It Is such a beautiful place but I wouldn’t ever go in August.
