To go to Rhodes in August

Its a bit silly really but i mainly posted for traffic and im looking for reviews and advice really.

Its my first holiday abroad in 18 years, i have never been in a hot country with my children who will be age 10 and 13 when we go, hotel is a small basic beautiful hotel and for all inclusive including flights it will be less then £2,100 in Afandou.
We are not a busy family, happy to chill and stroll around but would also enjoy some historical culture.

Im terrified of making a mistake, its a lot of money which i can afford (as long as its in installments) but what if i get it wrong? Will it be too hot to cope?
The reviews on the hotel are great but i cant find many reviews on the area.

Any tips, advice and ideas?

Thanks all, i think my heart is set on Rhodes now, with air con, a nice pool and staying out of the sun midday we should be fine

It is gorgeous, but very hot. Depends on you! I’m sure you’ll have a lovely time. The airport is usually a bloody nightmare though

I’ve just come back from Rhodes. August will be hot. 30 degrees rising. I love it there though. My favourite place in the world. Highly recommend Pefkos as a place to stay and Lindos to visit.

I think it's fine. It's hot, so what, it's summer. That's what it's for. Relax in the hottest parts of the day, get a room with air conditioning, it's beautiful.

@RhiWrites Is there much to do? I've been looking near Rhodes Old Town but think it might be a bit too busy.

RhiWrites · 19/10/2019 09:11

@userxx

Lots to do. Lovely sandy beaches, you can go for a ride in a glass bottomed boat as well. Amazing food, everywhere is full of restaurants. In Lindos you can explore the twisty streets or climb the hill to see the acropolis. In Rhodes Old Town there are more twisty streets, medieval architecture, an old fort/museum, and lots of things to buy. Shopping includes soaps, clothes, ceramics, artwork, and more food. There are pretty local cats which lots of places have feeding stations for - donate to the charities that run these. Go for walks or drives through the lovely scenery. See how souma is made in the distillery. Visit the history museums and see the Rhodes of the past. Plus pools, bars, kids clubs etc.

I’ve been 7 times and I’m not bored yet.

We went in August a couple of years ago and stayed at an all inclusive place, most of the time when we were there we were all in the pool even the one of us who hates water. We did do a bit of sightseeing but it was about 40 degrees and wasn't pleasant.

FluffyAlpaca19 · 19/10/2019 09:18

We're planning similar but will visit a northern European country like Denmark in the summer & do a southern med country in the October half term. It'll be hot but not blisteringly hot that you can't do anything. My friend went to Greece in August & was disappointed that she couldn't sight see as much as she wanted to as it was low 40's & too hot.

FluffyAlpaca19 · 19/10/2019 09:20

October half term would be a better option for Rhodes.

FluffyAlpaca19 · 19/10/2019 09:21

Posted too soon. Easter or May half term would be a better time to go with more manageable temperatures.

userxx · 19/10/2019 10:34

@RhiWrites Sounds perfect. I remember the cats when I went years ago, a kitten ended up staying in our apartment for a week. Broke my heart leaving her there, cried all the way home on the plane!

RhiWrites · 20/10/2019 11:55

You can adopt the cats, the vet in Kiotari will vaccinate and chip for you. Costs for that and transport come to about £700.

But the people of Rhodes do ask you not to take the cats into your apartments because they need to survive on the street and learn to come to the feeding stations. I know they are almost irresistible but one has to resist all the same in their best interests.
