AIBU to toss the bacon out?!

Hey everyone. Honest query here about a general knowledge I do not possess; Bacon lifespan. This has been in my fridge since end of May (I assume), and never opened/used; I don't know why to be honest. It may be because it was hidden under a bag of grated cheese.
I saw it today while tidying up the fridge for a new load of shopping and have no idea if it is safe to eat or not. It looks fine, but the use by date is 25th June. I have a useless sense of smell, so sniffing it won't help. I dont like wasting food, but dont want to give my family food poisoning either. 4 months past its use by date is a lot, considering this a perishable which was refrigerated and not frozen. Am I being unreasonable to just throw it out for the sake of safety?!

I'm usually very relaxed about eating out of date food, but even I would t eat bacon more than 3 months past its use by date (unless it had been frozen ).

Lockheart · 12/10/2019 14:53

If the use by date was only a few days I'd say no problem, but several months?? No way!

Despite being an utter git for binning open food (immunocompromised), I apply different criteria to sealed foods that have been inherently preserved - like cheese and bacon. I'd open it, sniff, and if it smelled like bacon, I'd cook it happily.

If it smells vinegary, though, straight into the bin.

Motherinlawsdung · 12/10/2019 14:55

I scrape the mould off jam and eat the jam, I cut sprouts off potatoes and eat the potatoes, I drink milk past the use by date if it smells ok, I cut the blue bits off old cheese and eat the cheese.
But I would not eat your bacon.

Rezie · 12/10/2019 14:56

Nope. Wouldn't eat a meat product that is that old and has not been prepared in any way

MustardScreams · 12/10/2019 14:57

It’s smoked, it’s fine.

HeadintheiClouds · 12/10/2019 14:57

Don’t risk being seriously ill for the price of a packet of bacon, seriously!
June!!

SpiderCharlotte · 12/10/2019 14:58

Absolutely no way. Grin

Pinkyyy · 12/10/2019 15:00

I can't believe you'd even consider eating that. How has it been in your fridge so long without you seeing it?

NearlyGranny · 12/10/2019 15:02

Ditch it.

cantfindname · 12/10/2019 15:02

It will feel slimy andstink if it has gone off.

I would probably at least open it and try it but would cook it very thoroughly.

c3pu · 12/10/2019 15:03

I'm absolutely hate wasting food and am happy to eat things past their use by date - but that would be going straight into the bin without a second thought.

CareBear50 · 12/10/2019 15:03

Non. No. Nein.

I wouldn't even consider it. For £2 or so..... definitely definitely not worth the risk!!

SprinkleDash · 12/10/2019 15:03

Bacon is a proven class one carcinogen, it causes cancer (look at report by World Health Organisation)! YABU eating it at all!

TheQueef · 12/10/2019 15:04

I would eat it.
It's bacon, already processed for longevity, cured and smoked.
But I live on the edge Grin and hate food waste.

IncrediblySadToo · 12/10/2019 15:06

Do you want to have D&V & possibly end up very ill in hospital firbthe price if a oa jet if bacon.

Do not give it to children or the elderly
Or your DH IF you love him

IncrediblySadToo · 12/10/2019 15:08

Fucking hell - sorry!

MrsAJ27 · 12/10/2019 15:10

Just bin it, why is this even a question?

MarkinTime · 12/10/2019 15:10

I would eat it if when I opened it, it smelt on and didn't leap out of the packet on its own accord.
I hate food waste too.
@Sprinkledash cigs cause cancer too, of which I would be lighting after my bacon butty.

Slowslowlavaflow · 12/10/2019 15:14

Thanks for the responses everyone. It is good to know that the majority of you agree that I should throw it away without a second thought. That was my first thought, but just wanted to clarify that this is the done deal for most. I note the sniff for vinegary smell, touch for slime, as well as that it smoked and processed. However, in the bin it goes, and next time I will make sure the cheese isn't hiding anything from me. Thanks everyone

Smoked is just a flavour in supermarket bacon.

I wouldn't eat it.

Slowslowlavaflow · 12/10/2019 15:29

Just wanted to add: My husband got home just as I was opening the pack to put it in the food bin. He had a good sniff and feel lol, and said it smelled absolutely fine and was not slimy. He also agreed that we should still throw it away despite his positive inspection. Thanks again everyone.

I would feed it to the dog. Do you have a dog?
