What do you all think of the case of the American woman claiming diplomatic immunity for running down and killing that young man Harry Dunn accidentally? She has now fled the uk claiming diplomatic immunity and left a devastated family behind facing a fight for justice?

It’s horrible but that’s how diplomatic immunity works. And to be honest she made a horrible horrible mistake but it was an accident and I do feel a bit sorry for her ... she’s a mother too and I can see why she would flee with her children rather than stay in the UK to potentially end up in a UK prison, being seperated from her children and her family, which wouldn’t bring back the poor boy who was killed but would just ensure that her children’s lives were ruined too. I hate to say it but in her position I think I’d do the same thing rather than risk breaking up my family and being seperated from my husband and children. It’s a horrible, heartbreaking and devastating situation and I feel for everyone involved. But I’m sure this has ruined her life too
I cannot believe you even thought this let alone typed it out.
Of course she should face the legal system. And what I don't understand about DI is that surely it applies in this country as well? So I don't understand why she had to flee - she couldn't be prosecuted in this country could she? But she could have faced the music and Harry's family.

Hasn’t it been said today that diplomatic immunity won’t apply?

tinatsarina · 13/10/2019 15:28

Yea I read that because she left it now doesn't apply or something

You only have diplomatic immunity when you are abroad. So, now she’s home she doesn’t (so the US could investigate and charge her for what happened), but it still covers the time she was here so the US still don’t have to extradite her.

Taken from the above BBC News article
'A statement issued on behalf of Mrs Sacoolas, whose husband worked at RAF Croughton near the scene of the crash, said she had "fully co-operated with the police".
It added: "She spoke with authorities at the scene of the accident and met with the Northampton police at her home the following day. She will continue to co-operate with the investigation.
"Anne would like to meet with Mr Dunn's parents so that she can express her deepest sympathies and apologies for this tragic accident."'

I'm sure the investigation can still take place without her being here. They have already interviewed her. The cases usually take 6 months to a year to get to the point of court.
