Getting black box insurance when partner doesnt want to

purplepolo · 08/10/2019 22:23

Weve just bought a new car, its a 1.8 turbo and as younger drivers (22) insurance without a black box is quite pricey.

We'd both be on the policy, although im the one paying for it and am the main dricer( he paid for the other smaller car - this car is larger and more family friendly) and with a black box is £900 for the year, without its £1400. No brainer for me, i dont drive like an idiot so figured just get the cheapest!

Partner is adamant he doesnt want a black box, hes not been driving long, about 3 months, which is why im also wanting to steer toward the blackbox also so he doesnt rag this new car about! Hes excited to have a powerful car compared to the fiesta, which i almost think all the more reason to have a box in it!

Opinions? Aibu to go with the black box one? Its just so much cheaper and seems like a no brainer but partner has the hump about it. He will use the car on weekends when we all go out together, as he uses the smaller car for work, so car will be with me all week anyway!

Get the box. Otherwise he'll drive it like a cunt - which is why he's so adamant he doesn't want tracking in it

C0untDucku1a · 08/10/2019 22:33

Get it. He sounds immature and a danger on the road.

Why do you need a family car at 22?!

PinkiOcelot · 08/10/2019 22:34

I’d go from the black box too. My daughter gets cash back if she’s driven well during the month.

Marshmallow91 · 08/10/2019 22:34

Definitely get it

BeUpStanding · 08/10/2019 22:35

Get the box fitted - absolute no brainer.

Petrichor11 · 08/10/2019 22:40

Get the box. He needs to grow the fuck up

BlueBilledBeatboxingBird · 08/10/2019 22:40

Why do you need a family car at 22?!

Presumably because she has a family?!

ArntNise · 08/10/2019 22:40

Get the black box
You are paying for it is reason enough - saving of £500 is another reason.
The fact he is behaving like a child is the icing!

BackforGood · 08/10/2019 22:47

It's a no brainer

Though, for the life of me I can't understand why a 21 yr old who passed 3 months ago and a 22 yr old would buy a 1.8 turbo.

-> I know, none of my business, but as you asked about the cost of insurance.......

Jellykat · 08/10/2019 22:57

Do it! my DS2 (now 21) has had a black box for over 2 years, and its been financially brilliant!
His score during the first year was only @67% (you can check using a phone app), which we worried about, but his 2nd years insurance was still so much lower then the first.
I will warn you the box didn't like too many short journeys or out of your control things like waiting too long at traffic lights, which initially dumbfounded us (and gave him his low score) but ultimately this didn't have any negative repercussions for a lower 2nd year insurance fee..
Go for it, you save so much financially!

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 08/10/2019 22:58

What restrictions does the black box place on the driver?

mum11970 · 08/10/2019 23:06

Why on earth have you bought at 1.8 turbo if you’re planning on putting a black box in it? The only reason to have a higher powered car is for faster acceleration, which is something you need to avoid with a black box.

NearlyGranny · 08/10/2019 23:12

The black box records how hard you brake and how violently you corner, amongst other things. Your insurance gets cheaper as you demonstrate that you are not hooning around. If he wants £500 worth of flinging it about, let him pay the extra!

On second thoughts, don't. Your policy, your decision. And you can go online to see the profile of your driving - and his. Note which days he drives and compare. If he's costing you money, take him off your policy and drive the new car exclusively.

It will be better for the car, too.

pooopypants · 08/10/2019 23:16

You paying = you deciding

Sounds like he wants to drive like a fucking loon and not be penalised for it.

purplepolo · 08/10/2019 23:19

C0untDucku1a we have a toddler and am due another in december. Its only a mondeo, its a perfect size especially the boot for a double pram

mum11970 i would have thought all cars regardless of engine size would need to be driven sensibly,so whether i had a 1litre ka or this (ford mondeo) it should be driven in a safe manner, not to accelerate quickly everywhere. We went with this car as well because we got such a good deal on it compared to other cars

FiddlesticksAkimbo no restrictions like mileage and cerfews, it just monitors how well you drive i.e. speed, braking, etc

I wouldn’t want a black box on my car either, but at that price difference it would be installed immediately. Since I’ve been driving for 30 years without a single incident, my available discount is minuscule so i can justify not getting one.

raspberryk · 08/10/2019 23:23

I had a 3L and a 2.5L in my early 20's, a 1.8 sounds like a normal engine to me? It isn't just about going fast, but the ability to accelerate progressively is safer in some situations than these stupid little no go carts.
At 22 it isn't unreasonable to buy a car which will become your family car when it happens/or op may already have a family.
What's wrong with people?

And get the black box!

purplepolo · 08/10/2019 23:24

Jellykat thats good to hear about the short journeys! Everything is pretty local to me other than a larger shopping centre about 30 miles away so would be doing shorter journeys in general.

BackforGood we got a really good deal on it, paid 800 for a 2010 mondeo which was really good! Our budget was around 1500 and we wanted a bigger car and when we saw that we figured we should go for it

PickAChew · 08/10/2019 23:31

If your insurance is already more than the car cost you, even with the black box, stuff him and go for the black box. It's not like you have that extra £500 just sitting there with nothing else to spend it on.

BackforGood · 08/10/2019 23:32

As I explain to my dc that are your age it isn't just the price of buying the car you look at, you have to look at the cost of running the car as well, which, at your age is mostly going to be insurance costs.

However, totally up to you if that's what works for you in your circumstances.

LittleFishSwim · 08/10/2019 23:35

If it is with MoreThan do not believe what they say about curfews. They impose a penalty for driving at certain times and it is impossible to get a decent score.

purplepolo · 08/10/2019 23:36

BackforGood yeah i get that, fuel, tax, etc is fine, and insurance would be cheaper if it was just me on there as ive been driving 5yrs and have my no claims bonus, but i do need him on there too really. A larger car was always going to be more costly but its needed to be done, we were struggling with the fiesta and no way would the double pram have fit in there lol

OP posts:
purplepolo · 08/10/2019 23:38

LittleFishSwim luckily not, its with RAC, although after reading your comment im going to go over their black box info again. Shocking that they can do that!

pickleface · 08/10/2019 23:39

I've got a black box with wise driving. I drive pretty sensibly I think and got 50 quid cash back after 2 months. Suits me fine.

0ooo0 · 08/10/2019 23:51

I could understand if anyone would not want a black box tbh.

I wouldn’t want one nor would I ever choose to have one. I do admit that I dislike being monitored generally though and naturally rebel against complying with Big Brother.

I can understand why you’d want one though and if you’re paying, it’s your choice.
