After the awful events today, to worry that we have no way of avoiding no deal.

But I really hope I am wrong Sad.

Unbelievable.

Even with an extension, which the Tories will do whatever they can to avoid, the next thing will be an election in which they will campaign on a no deal ticket - who will win that election in your opinion?

BeardedMum · 08/10/2019 20:18

Yep they are bonkers. You are right to worry.

NewNameGuy · 08/10/2019 20:18

Thanks Merkel.
For showing that you run the EU and have no intention of helping the UK leave

Nicknacky · 08/10/2019 20:19

My husband’s business is fucked in the event of a no deal. A successful company that has been going for nearly 30 years will go to the wall because of this nonsense.

BeardedMum · 08/10/2019 20:19

Helping the Uk to leave🤣

Really222 · 08/10/2019 20:20

No the people who are at fault are the Tories, not the EU. And in particular today, Dominic Cummings.

Can I ask what specifically happened today, please? Haven't caught up with the news.

Really222 · 08/10/2019 20:23

Various awful briefings out of Downing Street which were designed to and have caused a lot of bad feeling. Will find links. The briefings are suspected to come from Cummings.

As well as an offensive poster about Merkel courtesy of Leave EU.

OP posts:
Saddler · 08/10/2019 20:34

Hopefully we won't be able to avoid no deal

cantkeepawayforever · 08/10/2019 20:35

Saddler, what are the positive advantages of no deal, in a practical sense, to everyone in the UK/? And how do they outweigh the very obvious disadvantages?

cantkeepawayforever · 08/10/2019 20:39

I don't mean notional 'freedoms' - especially as I am not sure they outweigh the removal of freedom to travel. Nor promised 'more money' - because it doesn't outweigh the loss of jobs, the loss or shortening of life due to medicine shortages.

Just the genuine, practical, everyday advantages that you see specifically from no deal, as opposed to an orderly exit or the status quo.

lljkk · 08/10/2019 20:41

That kind of emotional blackmail is sure to make sure that EU unifies & they all go with the official request. Which is fine by Cummings, really.

A lot of the 'briefings' are just ideas Cummings is floating to agitate. That's the point of Brexit. To make everyone scared & miserable, suspicious of others.

DomC is not actually a true evil genius. His only plan is to stir. Suits him to make everyone distrust authority & feel like there's high uncertainty & you can't rely on others. Threatening briefings ("ooh look! another shiny thing!") are simply another way to do that.

As for BJ, he's flying by seat of his pants. Hasn't a clue what happens next. Like Trump, ignore what he says & watch what he does.

chomalungma · 08/10/2019 20:48

That poster was awful. It speaks volumes about certain people obsessed with WW2 and Germany.

No matter what you think of No Deal, I hope people disavow those sentiments in that poster.

HolyGuac · 08/10/2019 21:24

I really dislike the way the media have reported today's news as Merkel being the reason a deal is essentially impossible.

People are insane to think the EU would give a better deal for leaving than staying. I detest what a laughing stock our country has become and more over I detest the press and the politicians for the shitty, shameless stirring and misrepresentation.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 08/10/2019 21:37

I'd be very confident indeed that we're not leaving on 31st October. And pretty confident now that we're not leaving at all.

No election is due until 2022. The timing of any earlier election is in the gift of the remain alliance. And I think they'll be running scared, looking at the current polling on electoral voting intentions. The polling on brexit on the other hand is very much going their way.

My money is on some cobbled together alliance finally passing May's deal subject to a confirmatory referendum to be held next year.

longwayoff · 08/10/2019 21:40

Disgusting poster and vile statements from Downing Street. At some point in the future we will pause and reflect on this collective madness that we've allowed to happen. And we will all, leavers and remainers both, wonder if someone put something in the water supply as this is insanity.

AGermFreeAdolescent · 08/10/2019 21:42

YANBU to worry.

But I also think that today's events have woken people up to the idea that leaving the EU is going to happen. Up until today some people on here, FB, Twitter, etc were still entertaining the idea that there would either be another referendum because people had obviously changed their minds and were clearly going to vote remain, or there would be a general election in which people were clearly not going to vote for the Tories, or, a complete revoke of A50. I personally would prefer a deal and still think there may be one. But yes, today's events seem to have shocked people that didn't want to believe it that leaving is going to happen.

KennDodd · 08/10/2019 21:52

I agree OP

I think we'll face a NDB later this year/early next year after a short extension to allow time for a GE which the Tories will win, campaigning on a NDB ticket. If Corbyn wasn't such a twat and somebody else was leading Labour I think Labour would win the GE but sadly this is the situation we're in. I despair.

BarbariansMum · 08/10/2019 21:54

There was never any intention of reaching a deal. And dropping out this way cleverly gets rid of much of our environmental protection and workers rights legislation in one fail swoop. And then, in the financial panic that follows, whose going to insist on reinstating those? Whole thing's a conservative wet dream.

Really222 · 08/10/2019 22:00

But yes, today's events seem to have shocked people that didn't want to believe it that leaving is going to happen.

I voted remain, and would vote remain again. I know the UK is leaving the EU - but without a deal??? That’s what shocks me.

Though I hope you are right @FiddlesticksAkimbo.

OP posts:
chomalungma · 08/10/2019 22:12

A No Deal Brexit on bad terms is going to be really bad for when it comes to negotiating a trade deal with the EU afterwards and for negotiating a trade deal with the USA, given the effect on the GFA and the importance of that to US politicians in Congress and the Senate.

But you can't put that message on the side of a bus, can you?

Trottersindependenttraders · 08/10/2019 22:13

@NickNacky

My husband’s business is fucked in the event of a no deal. A successful company that has been going for nearly 30 years will go to the wall because of this nonsense.

I hear you. I fear that the firm I work for will be the same, we rely so much on importing our raw materials and exporting the finished goods. Our EU customers ask me regularly what will happen with Brexit. Michael Give insists ‘business is ready’. Are they? Cos we’re not, nor will we be. How can we plan for the unknown?
I concur, it’s nonsense.

Nicknacky · 08/10/2019 22:16

Trotters Import and export is key to my husband’s business. The majority of his customers who export have been refused permits and that will put them out of business which in turn affects his business.

I hope your job is safe, I really do.
