I have over 20 mugs and only like drinking out of two of them

I like nice round mugs not coffee mugs, no dark colours inside and no matt textures. No fancy shapes and no silly handles. I don’t know how we have so many that I don’t like.

I have the same problem, however I do need a different mug for tea and coffee. I especially hate Easter egg mugs but can't seem to get rid of them.

Yet I really like my Dairy Milk Easter egg cup for tea, although I can’t bear the Caramel Easter egg mug, which is exactly the same shape and size. Confused I drink coffee from very standard evenly shaped mugs, preferably shiny. The thought of rough pottery or stoneware makes me shudder. 🤢

I've got mugs I like the look of but don't use mostly Le Creuset and some Magpie ones. I give those to visitors.
A mug I love the look of and use but it's stoneware so I don't really like drinking from it.
Two china mugs I adore although one is chipped which is becoming annoying.
Mugs for tradesfolk mostly promotional ones from DH's work but also horrible chunky Denby ones I was given.
The kids have their own mugs as does DH.
My Mum also has a mug here as she only likes china and a tiny tiny strong coffee.

You have designated, lesser mugs for 'tradesfolk' than for visitors? Confused

I'm a bit like you, have favourites. I have quite different mugs for tea and coffee, tea doesn't taste the same out of a coffee mug in my opinion.
Of course the favourites break sometimes! Then there is a suitable period of mourning before they are replaced.

@Lisa I think it's a very good idea actually. We had a chap in to do some jobs and he covered the mug I gave him (and just about everything else in the house) with paint. I gave him a mug I never use so wasn't too sad about it but imagine if I'd have given him one of my favourites, which are always easy to access at the front of the cupboard?!

tinyvulture · 08/10/2019 06:45

My ex has GREAT mugs. My new partner’s mugs are awful.( Maybe I made a mistake???) They’ve all got sentimental value though - they belonged to one of his (approx) 960000 children in adolescence, or there is my personal favourite, the one with a hilarious sex joke which his ex wife gave him just after he found out she’d been cheating. Seriously, it’s like a potted biography in mug form.....

Most of my own mugs are in storage currently. I miss them.

Deminism · 08/10/2019 10:14

Love that @tinyvulture. Ltb?

If people would stop buying me mugs for birthdays/Christmas that would be fantastic (unless it's a specific one I've asked for Grin )

I keep bringing unwanted mugs to work but the amount of mugs in the cupboard never seems to go down!?!

SamBeckettslastleap · 08/10/2019 13:40

Maidsamilking there is a special type of mugginess which makes non matching mugs a perfect pair.

Cherrysoup if anything on MN should come with a 'trigger warning' it's your post..."rough pottery or stoneware" Envy (not envy)

tinyvulture hmm it would appear you have made an erroneous choice.

SamBeckettslastleap · 08/10/2019 13:41

How do you feel if someone else is drinking out of your most favourite mug?

Aquamarine1029 · 08/10/2019 13:46

I worked with a woman who drank out of a square mug. A fucking square with a handle. Gave me the rage every time I looked at it.

Wildthyme · 08/10/2019 13:49

I glare daggers if someone drinks out of my favourite mug even if I've given it to them.

Most of you would hate my mug. It's red inside. It's a perfect size - not Sports Direct size and not Easter egg mug size. Sadly the Disney Shop discontinued the line otherwise I'd have had more.

Crunchymum · 08/10/2019 13:51

I'm down to my last mug (and its chipped) despite having a cupboard full of mugs.

Mine were M&S polka dot and stripes (black and white and beige and white) but are very old and no longer stocked!

Crunchymum · 08/10/2019 13:52

No-one would dare drink out of my mug @SamBeckettslastleap

CharlieCoCo · 08/10/2019 15:43

I have a number of mismatched mugs and each day I have to see which I’m in the mood
For that day (I use my mug for the whole
Day, not jusy for one tea). It’s important to use the right mug or the tea won’t taste as nice lol . I have a thinner mug for coffee.

NoCryingInEngineering · 08/10/2019 22:51

Thin wall mugs for tea are the wrongest of the wrong things.

Drogosnextwife · 08/10/2019 22:54

Me too. I have 2 for coffee and 1 for tea. Never use the coffee ones for tea, or tea one for coffee. We have about 40 cups in total.

Drogosnextwife · 08/10/2019 22:55

And not one is the same.

RoseViolet101 · 08/10/2019 23:00

I can only drink out of my Emma Bridgewater Mummy mug. Smile At work I avoid drinking tea because they only have paper cups and I don’t want to buy another mug. Plus it doesn’t taste the same if I’m not at home in my pj’s.
