I have over 20 mugs and only like drinking out of two of them

I like nice round mugs not coffee mugs, no dark colours inside and no matt textures. No fancy shapes and no silly handles. I don’t know how we have so many that I don’t like.

@Pagwatch the heathen. You’ve packed his bags right? Or is “away” code for under the patio? Grin

Hassled · 07/10/2019 21:26

Oh I can't stand a novelty mug. How can you enjoy your tea if you're drinking out of some giant china pineapple with a face?

I made a newish friend a cup of tea in my favourite mug the other day and when she said "ooo, nice mug" I liked her even more. It's a good yardstick, I reckon.

Itsallpetetong · 07/10/2019 21:28

I have the same problem, however I do need a different mug for tea and coffee.

Me too! I told DH that I’m perfectly normal Grin

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/10/2019 21:30

The worst thing is that an effective way of taming and organising your surfeit of mugs is to buy a mug tree (or several). However, they invariably come with six new mugs included, so you're back to square one. It's a bit like buying a new kitchen bin and finding that it already comes with a 'free' bin-full of rubbish.

On a related note, I hear that parliament is urgently trying to rush through legislation to make it illegal for gift and card shops to ever sell more than one 'World's Best Mum/Dad/Gran/Budgie/Teacher' mug by enshrining such nefarious practice in law as automatically-proven fraud. That might help us all a bit with this traumatising issue.

iamadramallama · 07/10/2019 21:30

This made me smile! I thought I was the only one....:I have mug preferences for specific drinks, tea in certain mug for a certain time of the day Grin

SmileEachDay · 07/10/2019 21:31

I hate mugs that are thinner at the bottom than the top.

And mugs with stupid little tiny handles.

And small mugs.

Or overly big one.

Or ones with words.

Or “funny” mugs.

4 children. Not ONE "Best Mum" cup

I do have 3 "quirky quip about liking gin" gin balloons though.....

Pimmsypimms · 07/10/2019 21:34

Yep, me too!!
They've got to be fine china. I have 2 different sizes, the bigger one for the first brew of the day and the smaller one for subsequent brews. If my dh makes me a cuppa in another random mug, then I pour it in to one of the china mugs. Blush

Hassled · 07/10/2019 21:35

I have a special mug that's only used for my cup of tea that comes after my cup of coffee on Saturday and Sunday mornings. I don't bother using it during the week in the rush to get out of the house - it would be wasted. Thin white china, big bowl, delicate handle.

ragged · 07/10/2019 21:37

I made mistake of opening a random cupboard at work yesterday.
Stuffed with mugs never used!! Maybe.... 70 of them?

I have been known to take surplus to charity shops in past.

I am eyeing that cupboard up...

SmileEachDay · 07/10/2019 21:40

delicate handle

They give me the rage.

Wolfiefan · 07/10/2019 21:42

Of course you use different mugs for tea and for coffee. What fool says you don’t? Confused

LisaSimpsonsbff · 07/10/2019 21:43

Maybe I should set up some sort of swap with the people who like fine china mugs - I hate them but have several. I like my mugs chunky.

WellTidy · 07/10/2019 21:44

I am enormously fussy about mugs. So much so that I am slightly nervous about disclosing the extent of my fussiness, even on an anonymous forum Smile

I only drink out of a Dunoon mug, porcelain (dear god, no stoneware), Lomond shape. Even then, the colours must co-ordinate, but not match. So I have a variety of patterns within this shape, with different colour ways. Current favourite is the Blobs range, in red (bi will accept the blue and green, but they’re not a patch on the red). I also like the Slapdash, Hoopa and Piazza.

I probably have about 25 of these Lomond mugs in different patterns and colour ways, all coordinating (but of course).

TwattingDog · 07/10/2019 21:47

DH has broken my last 3 favourite mugs. All irreplaceable, due to bring hand made pottery. I tend to buy them in obscure farm shops etc, and never find out who made them.

I'm back to my trusty and ancient mugs from university (16 years ago!).

DH is a philistine about mugs and doesn't see the difference between one or another.

greenflamingo · 07/10/2019 21:47

I have a league table of mugs..... some (almost all) never touch my lips. But I feel like it’s good to have them lingering about to remind me how good the good mugs truly are. Other less picky family members make good use of them all. In my childhood home, offering to put the kettle had to involve asking for mug selections too - I’m from a long line of choosy sorts. I think you’re entirely normal OP.

SmileEachDay · 07/10/2019 21:48

I like my mugs chunky

Yep.

I like Le Creuset mugs. They are a good shape.

healthylifestylee · 07/10/2019 21:48

I only like my Star Wars ones oops

Freaking0ut · 07/10/2019 21:51

I have a large mug for my morning tea, a different, smaller fine china one for coffee and another one for my evening cuppa.

I also have a special spoon for eating breakfast. My husband thinks I am a weirdo, I have NO idea why 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sorry but while mug preferences are normal and rational, cutlery preferences are weird and annoying. I know this to be the case because I'm fussy about mugs and DH is fussy about cutlery and it hypocritically really annoys me.

AwdBovril · 07/10/2019 21:56

I like thin mugs. Proper china. I have 2 (tea, coffee), & 2 insulated mugs, as our house is pretty cold in winter. DH has approximately 743 mugs. And cannot bring himself to part with any of them. It's like a horrible jigsaw puzzle, trying to get them all into the cupboard.

GhostHoward · 07/10/2019 21:56

I don't have any two mugs that are the same. They have to all feel nice in my hand and it also depends on the day; the time of day; and how I'm feeling as to which one I want to use. None can have dark insides, or be cheaply made.

My partner and I argue about the fact that I hate his mugs and would love to give them away. Grin

ShowerOfShite · 07/10/2019 21:58

I've just been bought the perfect mug after years of searching. I get a little thrill every time I use it.

SamBeckett · 07/10/2019 21:59

I had a mug cull on saturday . I have now got just 10 left .
2 very dark plain blue
2 lighter blue with faces on them
1 roundish ( think a bit like a brandy glass ) strictly for cocoa / horlicks 2 very big mugs ( hold almost a pint each )
2 Christmas market mulled wine mugs .

I am getting rid of 7 other random mugs / cups mostly the V shape type or have got tiny handles .

How the hell did i get so many mugs ?

darkcloudsandrainstorms · 07/10/2019 22:02

I too only use two mugs. I have an evening mug and a morning mug. There are a lot of other mugs in the cupboard but they are not my mugs. I should throw them away.
