To stay late to make time up if I'm late

verytiredandstressed · 07/10/2019 19:29

I've always if for whatever reason I'm late for work stay at the end of the day to make time up even if it's a minute to longer ie traffic bad or school drop off issues .
A friend of mine disagreed said you shouldn't have to make time up if your late . I noticed colleagues leaving
on time but have arrived the same time as me or even later .
Is it just me but surely if you don't stay those few minutes then you've not done your full working day ?
I would say to my manager sorry I'm late I'll stay to make the few minutes up but others just leave on time .
What do others do if your late for work do you make time up ?

We make up the time, otherwise we’d be down on our hours on our work sheets (civil service).

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 07/10/2019 19:31

Yes I always do and my boss is fine with this, depends on your workplace whether being punctual is important or not.

Dollywilde · 07/10/2019 19:32

I rarely take my lunch so I ‘make up’ the time that way, that said I’m usually staying late on the basis my trains don’t match my working hours so tend to do 20 mins extra that way too.

I do a ‘you’re here to do the job not the hours’ job though. If I were in a clock in clock out job I’d definitely make up the time - you don’t really want to give them a reason to be funny with you and I hate work to rule. Like it or not if I’m late then that’s not their problem.

Sceptre86 · 07/10/2019 19:35

I take the time off my lunch and just come back earlier. I do think it is important to make up the time so as not to take advantage but it depends on the workplace.

Allmyfavouritepeople · 07/10/2019 19:36

I don't make up the time. I was late today due to canceled public transport. Totally beyond my control.
I do work hard when I'm at work however unlike some of the team which is noticed and appreciated.
If I was late more regularly I would make up the time or change my transport to stop it happening but as a one off I don't see that I should be punished when I had no control over it.

TheTrollFairy · 07/10/2019 19:37

I don’t make up time and I’m usually late. I miss a lot of work breaks though so I think I generally work over my hours

ElizaDee · 07/10/2019 19:38

I don't. If my work is done it doesn't matter in my job.

which1 · 07/10/2019 19:38

I quite often arrive 5 mins late but don't really take my lunch hour and sometimes answer emails etc out of hours.

slashlover · 07/10/2019 19:39

I'd be subject to disciplinary action if I was consistently late.

PooWillyBumBum · 07/10/2019 19:44

I work in a really relaxed office so no one would notice. I certainly wouldn’t count the minutes.

Sometimes I work 9-3.50 because I need to get DD, other days I’m online at 7am, stay in office until 6pm and then shooting off the odd email at 10pm. I only worry if I feel I’m either burning out or not meeting my objectives.

Carrie7899 · 07/10/2019 19:48

I'd definitely stay and make up the time. It's dishonest not to

verytiredandstressed · 07/10/2019 19:51

Current workplace are quite keen on punctuality and we clock in too . Even a minute late is late and my manager dislikes it .
I was thinking of requesting to change my start time as I hate rushing and being late but when my friend passed that comment and I noticed colleagues leaving on time so thought is it just me .

I don't have fixed hours, but core hours (10-12 and 2-4). I keep a time sheet and just make sure I never go in to a negative balance. Well actually that never has happened, I keep the time sheet to make sure I am not owed too many hours. Most days I work slightly under my hours because certain times of the month I work quite a bit of overtime due to workload.

I never stay late if there's nothing else that needs doing that day.

ChikiTIKI · 07/10/2019 19:53

Ooh, I wanted to add.

If I was forced to be in at a set time everyday I would hate it as it's just not necessary in my office job. So if that happened I would never ever stay late.

I think you get an awful lot more out of people if you are flexible.

Swer987 · 07/10/2019 19:58

Depends on the situation for me. If I overslept, I’d either take a shorter lunch or stay late at the end of the day. If it was reasons beyond my control (traffic), I’d leave on time.

Lollypop701 · 07/10/2019 19:59

Your boss probably likes punctuality as everyone goes home on time, even if late. So it’s an easy call to deal with the lateness rather than leaving on time. You’ve drawn short straw as you’re conscientious. Unfortunately a manager usually ends up having to treat everyone the same, even if behaviour is different

BlueChangeling · 07/10/2019 20:05

I started a new job this past year 9 - 5, In previous jobs I'd aways make up the time if late and often worked through lunch.

But it's just me and my line manager in my building now and they always come in between 10.30/11.30 then leave at 16.00 even through they're suppose to work the same hours as me. I am now a rebel and if I'm late I never make up the difference because no one would ever know or care anyway.... I must admit it took me months to work up the courage to do it.

GG20 · 07/10/2019 20:07

I work flexitime so it's not really an issue, but I feel the same as you OP - I wouldn't feel right if I didn't make up the time!

user1493413286 · 07/10/2019 20:09

I don’t as I’m late at most every month or 6 weeks; probably not even that but then again I rarely take my full lunch break so maybe I would if I took a full lunch hour

GhostHoward · 07/10/2019 20:18

I work 8.00-2.30. If I'm 10 minutes late I'll make them up at the end of the day. The actual hours I work don't matter, so long as I work 6.5 hours in a day. Today I went in an hour later, as I didn't have to pick up the kids at 3pm, so wanted an extra hour in bed. When I work from home sometimes I'll start at 6am...sometimes I'll take a long lunch.

I'm allowed this because I'm honest with my hours, and won't short change my boss by a minute, unless he tells me to leave early. Your colleagues are taking the piss and could cause problems for the people, like you, who are genuine.

stanski · 07/10/2019 20:30

We've got no one looking at the clock. You can come in later or leave earlier as long as your job is done and you don't just leave early every day... I regularly log in before going into the office and reply to all morning emails before heading in, also do stuff on weekends and evenings which I don't HAVE to.

That said in a past job where I had to get 3 tubes to be in I was always late and had managers to hated it and would stand up and point at the 9:03 clock ... I wouldn't personally look at what others do. If your boss doesn't like lateness then you make sure you ain't late or change your hours. the others are only responsible for themselves.

verytiredandstressed · 07/10/2019 20:30

I agree @Lollypop701
That's what I'm thinking @GhostHoward
My dh says as long as I do what I do and my manager is fine then not to worry about others . I do worry though , I worry about being late as I am normally punctual.
If it makes any difference I'm the only one with school age dc , the others only have themselves to get ready . My manager knows my situation but I'm always conscience of not taking the piss ie others thinking because I have dc I'm late so perhaps I over compensate.

Being late should be a once in a while occurance. If you are late on a regular basis then really you should be addressing it - either by leaving earlier in the morning or asking to start work later.
I dont make up time like for like that day unless it’s a prearranged lateness eg school assembly or something, but we all regularly work through lunch, I will stay late occasions we are crazy busy. Plus most days I start 10-15 minutes early due to the way it works with school drop off and starting work.

heartsonacake · 07/10/2019 20:48

We work on a clock in/out system. People who are late aren’t allowed to make up the time because that would be rewarding them for their lateness. You stay till your shift ends.

I think it’s a great policy as it encourages punctuality.
