To stay late to make time up if I'm late

I've always if for whatever reason I'm late for work stay at the end of the day to make time up even if it's a minute to longer ie traffic bad or school drop off issues .
A friend of mine disagreed said you shouldn't have to make time up if your late . I noticed colleagues leaving
on time but have arrived the same time as me or even later .
Is it just me but surely if you don't stay those few minutes then you've not done your full working day ?
I would say to my manager sorry I'm late I'll stay to make the few minutes up but others just leave on time .
What do others do if your late for work do you make time up ?

I was told that cutting lunch short doesn't count towards making up time - I'm technically paid for my lunch hour so I can't do that and am expected to take it.

I wouldn't worry about 5 minutes here and there, but consistently late more than a few minutes I think people should make up the time.

In my line of work starting late and leaving later would be pointless because the whole point in starting at that time is because you are needed more at that time. Making up the time at the end of the day would be pointless.

I'm hardly ever late but recently the last couple of weeks the traffic has been horrendous and I can't leave earlier due to school drop off . So I have been 2,3 or even 5 minutes late recently which I hate . ( maybe twice a week ) I'm hoping it's a one off and the next day it's as bad so previously I'd be 5 -10 minutes early I'm now 5 minutes late .
That's what I was thinking to change my start time I'm happy to do so I think it would be less stressful . I just found it odd that others would leave on time and not stay the few minutes to make up .

Depends on the job and how much it affects others. I work from home so I’m never late. But it doesn’t work in my job to make up time later. I can’t tell people who have an 8 am appointment that I’m making up time so their appointment will now be 4 pm or something. The company also feels that allowing people to make up time I’d essentially allowing people to pick their own working hours. Which is fine but someone needs to start at 5.30 am when we have the first appointments. We can’t all pick our working times when we have advertised consultation times.
