So bloody hungry

I didn't really know where to post. It seems wrong to post in the eating-disorder topic as that's not what this is.

Over the last few months my appetite has become huge, I snack (a lot) throughout the day & my portion sizes have become giant, sometimes double what DP will have. Yesterday (for example) I ate:
2 x bowl of granola
1 x peanut butter sandwich
1 x bagel (+ ham & cheese)
2 x biscuits
1 x plate of cauliflower & broccoli cheese
2 x muller yoghurt things
2 x bowl of beef rice with veg

I could have easily eaten more. I'm 5"4, 52kg and a size 6/8. If I do not eat much, I lose weight very easily but don't seem to gain any weight. DP reckons I am just 'greedy', but I'm starting to wonder if there's an underlying medical problem. I just don't want to waste NHS time, it sounds so ridiculous.Blush Would you go to GP?

My sister is 5 ft 6 and a UK size 0 and would eat triple to what you do. I helped her measure her calorie intake one week and it averaged between 3-4k per day gross but she is very active too - so is maintaining her weight on approx 2k net which is about right. No medical problems or eating disorders at all - she only eats when hungry. If you think you have a problem then do speak to a GP but honestly your diet isn’t too bad.0

Butchyrestingface · 07/10/2019 10:00

Presumably pregnancy has been ruled out?

NotSorry · 07/10/2019 10:02

do you do a lot of exercise OP? I'm a sports coach so eat a lot due to a lot of activity, but don't gain weight

ibanez0815 · 07/10/2019 10:06

i would see the GP. Could be a thyroid problem; an overactive thyroid. an overactive thyroid speeds up your metabolism and can make you hungry and being able to eat much more within piling on weight.

AutumnRose1 · 07/10/2019 10:07

what is a "bowl"? That could be any amount

maybe you had a small appetite and now it's increasing. if you feel well, that's fine.

Cornettoninja · 07/10/2019 10:07

It could be worth your GP checking your thyroid and maybe a few other routine tests due to a sudden change in your appetite but that might just be who you are.

Sure you haven’t got a tapeworm? Any travel abroad?

AmIThough · 07/10/2019 10:08

I would be starving after eating that!

Your diet is incredibly healthy.
I'm sure if you ate takeaways every day you'd gain some weight but if you're worried it's always work chatting to your doctor.
You know your body better than anyone else does.

underground76 · 07/10/2019 10:08

You're not eating that much protein throughout the day. Most of what you've listed there, bar a small amount of protein in the peanut butter and some beef in the evening, is carbs and fat, and that might be sending your blood sugar/energy levels up and down quite erratically throughout the day and making you feel hungry. I would try having a more protein-rich breakfast and lunch.

If you still feel that you are eating significantly more (without having significantly upped your activity levels) and your weight is falling, then yes, go to the GP.

BlueCornsihPixie · 07/10/2019 10:12

Are you putting on weight?

Presumably you were maintaining your weight on less if there has been an increase in your appetite. Eating a lot more than normal and not putting on weight would worry me. If this was normal for you then not so much

I think it's worth a visit to your GP. It might be nothing, but worth getting checked out. Doesn't diabetes cause you to feel hungry? Or overactive thyroid. Or tapeworm as above. Not necessarily any of those things but should be investigated

anothernamejeeves · 07/10/2019 10:13

A UK size 0????

Teddybear45 · 07/10/2019 10:15

@ anothernamejeeves - yep all of the women are that size except me Envy even after having multiple kids. But my sister is probably the most active one and eats a lot more - perfectly healthy though!

lemonadex · 07/10/2019 10:16

Definitely not pregnant.

I try to work out, but not much more than 10 minutes (at home) a day other than chasing a toddler around.

Quite a large bowl, my DP had one bowl and was full. He is a very well built 6 ft.

lemonadex · 07/10/2019 10:23

Yesterday was quite a healthy day. I usually spend a lot on chocolate / desert things & I'm trying to cut down but I have to confess I do usually eat a lot of junk.Blush We were visiting my grandma yesterday, so DS & I had the cauliflower cheese at her house for dinner. When DP came home from work later in the evening, I made dinner at home & that was the beef rice. So 2 dinners for me, one for DP!

Ellabella989 · 07/10/2019 10:26

My DP can eat an insane amount and he never gains any weight. He’s very skinny and doesn’t even get bloated. He’s had every blood test you can think of and there’s never anything flagged up and the GP said he’s in great health. So annoying as I eat one unhealthy meal and I’ve gained a couple of pounds.
Sorry for TMI but he poops a lot which might be why he’s always hungry and has a fast metabolism.

SleepingStandingUp · 07/10/2019 10:29

I think it's worth a visit to the doc to rule out anything but if you're not gaining in that, I'd say your body needs it.
Tell DH to shut up and not shame you for what you eat.

zebrasdontwearbras · 07/10/2019 10:33

As it's a noticeable change that has happened over the past few months, I'd make an appointment with the GP - they can arrange a blood test and see if your thyroid has gone a bit crazy. My GP told me thyroid problems are quite common after pregnancy when I consulted her about feeling out of sorts - turned out I was slightly anaemic (but my thyroid was fine).

Brexitstash · 07/10/2019 10:33

If you've cut down on the sugar your body will want extra calories, it's not surprising that you're hungry.

Nanny0gg · 07/10/2019 10:34

Any other symptoms?

Passthecherrycoke · 07/10/2019 10:38

I don’t think you eat much

I opened this thread as I have the same problem. I ate an entire packet of hobnobs after dinner yesterday 🤦🏼‍♀️

lemonadex · 07/10/2019 10:52

@Nanny0gg

I'm tired, but I think that just comes with having a toddler (who doesn't sleep)..?

OP posts:
lemonadex · 07/10/2019 10:53

@Passthecherrycoke

Ooh, yum! I had a whole packet of Oreos on Saturday night. Grin

OP posts:
Passthecherrycoke · 07/10/2019 10:58

Yep I’m tired too. And breastfeeding. I think both make you super hungry

lemonadex · 07/10/2019 11:03

I'm thinking it might be a thyroid problem. I had DS 16 months ago so it could be an after pregnancy thing...

Maybe yesterday wasn't the best example. I am prone to eating more throughout the day and will order pizzas/takeaways soon after dinner just for myself as I'm never full. I think because I am quite small/petite & I used to barely eat a thing, this change in appetite has surprised me.

OP posts:
lemonadex · 07/10/2019 11:04

@Passthecherrycoke

Yes! The two go hand in hand. DS has just finished breastfeeding this week.
