To ask Leavers what is actually wrong with the backstop?

The current, UK wide backstop in the Withdrawal Agreement is simply a safety net to ensure no hard border is required until we find a technological solution which enables us to leave CU/SM

What’s the problem with that?

Why is it such a big issue for Leavers?

I can only imagine it’s either that

  • Leavers still think ‘they need us more than we need them’ so we’d never actually need a technological border anyway as we’ll end up with the same terms outside the EU

Or

  • They know the whole WA is actually shit and worse than we have now so the backstop is the tangible way to stop it being approved

It’s only until we find an actual solution to the border. Which you(?) have explained quite clearly will not happen...

It is NOT ONLY THE BLOODY EU... it is the FUCKING PROCESS AND OUR OWN POLITICIANS who have done this.

Pretty certain I have also said that before!

It suits NOBODY! Leavers and Remainers alike have been failed by ALL politicians..

Blech! I am repeating myself.. in the face of so many fingers in so many ears...

curious not sure why you’re getting so ranty.

If we want to leave the SM / CU we need to find a solution to the border.

It’s quite simple

??!!??

Never mind. I should know better by now. There's none so blind and all that!

Leaving the EU and protecting the GFA is not possible
We were promised, in more ways than just this, something that isn't deliverable
JRM and his cronies want to lower food and environmental protections. We can only have open trade borders if we have an agreement on standards
We could end up with a Scottish trade border in theory. Farming is a devolved issue. We have the same standards because we are in the EU. Once /if we leave then Scotland could have different standards to the rest of the UK. Our meat for example could be pumped full of water and antibio that are not allowed in Scotland

@scaryteacher - Below is the text from an article in the DT by Lord Trimble who could be said to know a bit about the GFA, as he won the Nobel Prize for it.

While Trimble was involved in the GFA, he was dragged, kicking and screaming to it. He is not exactly a poster child for cross-community inclusion. Have a look at some footage of him in orange marches.

project fear

Anyone mentioned the Millenium Bug yet....?

We have a hard border with all EU countries, why the big concern Ireland will have the same procedures the rest of the UK has had with all EU members.

jasjas1973 · 07/10/2019 18:15

Exactly tonglong lets have a full hard border there, we did it before in the 70s, 80s and 90s and it was absolutely fine, no issues at all.....

Its a just a bunch of remainers stirring the pot........surely?
