My wife is demanding pants, but I don’t want to offend, either way?!?!

Scottish 'clan tartan' is all just made up as well. A Victorian invention to encourage tourists - maybe late 19th c invention rather than 20th, is all!

Plaids historically tended to have colours and patterns from certain places - estate tweeds, etc.

MarDhea · 08/10/2019 22:38

True, Scrimshaw. At least there was a general tradition of tartans having local variants throughout Scotland. In Ireland, tartan was just another pattern like stripes and checks - nice but not meaningful.

LifeonVenus · 09/10/2019 12:52

I feel I need to mention this as somewhat relevant to the discussion on Irish dancing and kilts. My brother was the first man (it was senior mens, so over 18's) who won the Irish dancing World Dancing Championships wearing trousers. It was a pretty big deal at the time as it was felt, not wearing a kilt would go against him, but I think he was 19, sick of being labelled gay, and wore trousers and won. After that, most boys now wear trousers dancing. Just a little claim to fame lol.

LifeonVenus · 09/10/2019 12:53

Might have given my identity away if any of you are from Irish Dancing world...........

LifeonVenus · 09/10/2019 12:56

Particularly the Worlds as they were called for short, was not the place to try out trousers. Lol. But he did and won it. 2 years running.

I think it's what put a lot of young boys off Irish dancing actually. Having to wear a kilt/skirt.

I know he was teased all his life growing up as he always had to wear a kilt but he just said fuck it and wore trousers.

LifeonVenus · 09/10/2019 12:58

Oh and a lot of credence has to be given to Michael Flatley for his performance on Eurovision the year or so before where he wore trousers and modernised Irish dancing.

LifeonVenus · 09/10/2019 13:00

But for us girls - we love Scotsmen wearing kilts. And their socks with little feathers on them. It was just a way for us to flirt with them, we never assaulted them and lifted their kilts, but we did ask.............

Just in case there are kids there though and you've an over-zealous drunken Irish woman, might be wisest to wear pants.

geordiejock · 09/10/2019 13:28

Hello mumsnet ,long, long time lurker first time poster live in Scotland born in Northumberland and a bloke. At last I have summat to contribute!

The OP should wear what he likes how he likes.

I own 2 kilts, and formal and a tacktikilt for when I am working in the woods.love them to bits, love to get the air moving around.

For a wedding I would now wear undies but the same tartan at the kilt, both for hygiene and decency, it will get lifted once the drink is flowing. But then, thats part of why I like wearing it if I am honest.

nowayhose · 09/10/2019 13:36

I've only ever heard of the English or Welsh wearing underwear when wearing a kilt, NEVER a Scot.

If the kilt is yours then you can wear whatever you like under it, you are not responsible for what other guests may or may not do to your kilt :)

Enjoy the wedding :)

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 09/10/2019 13:37

I don't get the fuss. If we all went 'traditional' none of us would be wearing a bra for starters...

Lyricallie · 09/10/2019 13:43

Another Scottish person checking in all the guys I know wear pants under their kilts.

HMArsey · 09/10/2019 13:48

Why on earth would someone choose not to wear underwear? If I wear a skirt I still put pants on. What's wrong with people?

And trying to look at the genitals of someone you don't know, without their permission? That's just wrong.

yesteaandawineplease · 09/10/2019 14:34

this thread is hilarious. Scottish lass here and my dh is always a true Scotsman when in his kilt

SpamChaudFroid · 09/10/2019 14:38

Our local hire company request the wearing of underpants.

For some reason that made me Grin

SpamChaudFroid · 09/10/2019 14:42

Floozie

MrsMoastyToasty · 09/10/2019 15:42

There are Welsh tartans too.

(I'm English but have a Welsh surname.)

MockersthefeMANist · 09/10/2019 16:26

Time for an Old Chestnut? (In the appropriate accent.)

  • "Is anything worn under the kilt?"
  • "No, it's all in perfect working order."
Redglitter · 09/10/2019 16:33

Her “friends” will try to lift it, apparently

I never understand why this is seen as acceptable. If a group of men grabbed a female guests dress to see what she was wearing the Police would be called.

I've seen this before at functions. Somehow the females involved seem to just think it's a bit of a laugh. I bet theyd find it far from funny if the situation was reversed

GPatz · 09/10/2019 16:54

My husband doesn't. Guess who has to do up the twatting shoelaces if they come undone.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 09/10/2019 17:51

If we all went 'traditional' none of us would be wearing a bra

Nobody wears bras under kilts either, though I can sort of see how it might work, with a little bit of safety-pin engineering.

Maybe not, actually.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 09/10/2019 19:06

I meant bras in general - not sure when knickers were invented (not soon enough if you ask me)

cockcrowfarm · 10/10/2019 06:10

Compromise: wear your pants for the day time events and get them off after dinner!

SpamChaudFroid · 10/10/2019 14:28

Nobody wears bras under kilts either

I wish they would though, under all clothes. We're expected by society to keep our boobs flopping about, so why isn't more supportive underwear (like jockstraps) the norm for men? Underwiring could of course be optional, for lift and va va voom. I can't imagine minimiser penis bras being popular with the men though Grin

ScrimshawTheSecond · 10/10/2019 14:55

Ballconette?

SpamChaudFroid · 10/10/2019 15:06

Yes, something like Wonderbra that thrusts everything up, out and firmly on display. Padding would certainly be popular.
