When I first learned text speak it was clear that
ur = You are
yr=Your

But UR seems to be used for both now - totally unacceptable Grin

No one uses text speak anymore. just type the word you want.
So much easier.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 05/10/2019 18:33

YANBU. Lazy youth of today, etc.

Mephisto · 05/10/2019 18:34

I get irked by ‘I text her’. It’s clearly ‘I texted her’.

Snoopdogsbitch · 05/10/2019 18:34

I'm a real stickler for correct grammar and spelling but I've had to accept that language is a living, moving, changing thing. We don't use the common language of Shakespeare anymore, so be it.

bridgetreilly · 05/10/2019 18:36

I have never heard of that distinction and barely ever seen anyone use yr. So YABU.

RolytheRhino · 05/10/2019 18:37

U r bn U bc ur premiz = flawd

Celebelly · 05/10/2019 18:38

With smartphones now it actually takes longer to write in text speak half the time!

Celebelly · 05/10/2019 18:39

Also I've never seen anyone use 'yr' or used it myself so ur def BU m8

Petrichor11 · 05/10/2019 18:41

I spent most of my teen years online in the late 90s early 00s and never saw or used yr in the way you said so YABU

Who even uses text speak now except ironically?

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 05/10/2019 18:46

I've never used or never seen anyone use yr before it was always ur no matter whether we meant your or you're because it's text speak and doesn't actually matter.

filka · 05/10/2019 18:48

U r bn U bc ur premiz = flawd

My phone wouldn't let me write that without correcting at least 3 things.

I'm old-school - I write all text messages in proper English. Mostly, so do my teen kids, but with a few more spelling mistakes. And sometimes they just speak the message straight into WhatsApp. So I think you are out of date rather than U or NU.

MamaGee09 · 05/10/2019 18:51

Never even anyone type yr for your. Always been ur. The youth of today ha ha at the grand old age of 43 I use ur.

yellowallpaper · 05/10/2019 18:52

I do put u r (you are) sometimes but that's the limit of my text speak. U r is actually quicker than you are.

Spartak · 05/10/2019 18:53

Never seen yr used for your. Wouldn't it be short for year?

Crunchymum · 05/10/2019 18:54

If you are really going to be pedantic then lose the God awful text speak altogether!!

Crunchymum · 05/10/2019 18:55

And how the fuck do you learn text speak??? Confused

familycourtq · 05/10/2019 19:00

And how the fuck do you learn text speak??
Ahem, I er, bought a little book - in Waterstones :)

Aprillygirl · 05/10/2019 19:03

Another one who's never seen yr used for your. R u sure u haven't dreamt it OP?

RolytheRhino · 06/10/2019 08:30

And how the fuck do you learn text speak?

I never used it, but basically, imagine you're paying by the letter to write your message and try to make it understandable with the fewest characters possible. I just paid more for texts on PAYG as a teenager, before everyone got unlimited contracts.

WanderingMind · 06/10/2019 08:39

Does anyone use text speak anymore? Very Nokia 3310 in the 90s Grin

RolytheRhino · 06/10/2019 08:42

@WanderingMind

It was useful back when you paid by the text message, so anyone still on pay as you go might, I suppose. Or if someone were desperate to fit their essay into a single tweet.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 06/10/2019 08:47

Read a post just now on here which used ur for your and it annoyed the fuck out of me as it looks so illiterate. I feel your pain, OP.

ChasingRainbows19 · 06/10/2019 08:57

Surely no one needs text speak now with smartphones? It was useful with the early texting mobiles where you had to press the numbers to get the letters etc. It seemed to take forever to write properly hence why text speak was used. Now we have a keyboard....

dudsville · 06/10/2019 09:00

I've never used text speak Sens my friends and family don't either so I'm not sure. If i saw "ur" or "yr" is needed the context if the sentence around it to get it, otherwise I might think it's a typo.

ShowOfHands · 06/10/2019 09:04

Yr = year

Ur = your or you're, context needed

I've never used txt spk but that was always my experience.
