When I first learned text speak it was clear that
ur = You are
yr=Your

But UR seems to be used for both now - totally unacceptable Grin

Ur would be your and u r would be you are?

Back in the day, my colleague used to send emails in text speak - from her PC. We were secretaries. It must have taken her ages given we were all really fast typists!

Yr = year, surely?

MitziK · 06/10/2019 10:11

I used similar for speedwriting dictation about a million years ago (never learned shorthand, as it cost a lot of money to go on a course). You are correct that yr = your, but the only person I ever saw using textspeak was a rather sad middleaged man who wanted to convince much younger women that he was really down with the youth.

Just use the correct words. We have decent smartphones now, not 3310s, and autocorrect deals with the majority of issues, even if it still cannot compensate for people who don't know the difference between "you're" and "your".

Oh gosh!
Somebody I went to school with is the queen of text speak! It drives me nuts! It takes me longer to guess what she is trying to say than it would for her to text full words!
Vat = that
Yr = year
Ur = your/you are
Yano = you know
Ikr = I know right
Ver = there/their

An example of her texts.
U knw ver ws vat girl. Wht ws her name? Do yano. I saw her lst yr at d prk wiv her kids.

Luckily I don't speak to her very often so it doesn't matter too much to me. When I do get the occasional text I usually ignore until she calls me! Funnily enough she is really well spoken.

iklboo · 06/10/2019 12:47

@Iputthescrewinthetuna - that would drive me batshit.

Pedant and text speak, or txt spk, really don't belong in the same sentence.

It isn't a language, it clearly has no rules relating to grammar or syntax,
so as long as people can understand the meaning behind the symbols the person has type what on earth does it matter.
