Should he be fired?!

NC because I have told this story to all my friends and family this afternoon in a fit of outrage and don’t want to be recognised under normal username

Having a house renovated. Went to check on it today unexpectedly (as id been yesterday and told contractors see you next week). Went in and called “hello”, no answer. Go to first floor and see someone gassing it up the stairs to the second floor. Master bedroom REEKS of marijuana. A boarded up window in yesterday had been removed in what I can only assume was an attempt to hide smell. Go up to third floor which REEKS of cigarette smoke and find a dopey plasterer there acting shifty and moronic and “working”.

What would you do in this situation?

I knew I should have included the drug thing in the title!

He should be fired, but I would absolutely insist he is not allowed in your house again.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/10/2019 15:41

Yes. Tell his boss. He may be using machinery, car, drill, mixer... and his employer's insurance won't cover him if he is under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

That and you'd quite like your renovations done by someone unimpaired, capable and not slowed down by his recreational time!

And as your home is his workplace it is illegal for him to smoke in there! Not to mention IT IS YOUR HOME!

I'm sure there are a few other things you can add, but at he moment that's all I can come up with!

easyandy101 · 04/10/2019 15:43

I'd just ask for 2s personally

Whydothesethingshappentome · 04/10/2019 15:44

So I told his boss, who wasn’t there. Boss tried to say the guy carries weed around in his pocket and that’s the smell 😒 then he said if it happens again he will fire him. I am not sure that’s enough for me though.

Get rid of them and go back to drawing board.
Find better and more reliable builders, they do exist.

Rachelle11 · 04/10/2019 15:57

You were not smelling weed from his pocket! lol The boss is a moron.

VapeVamp12 · 04/10/2019 16:01

I'd just ask for 2s personally

lol, same

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 04/10/2019 16:05

Tell boss he is off the job or they’re all off the job.

TulipsTulipsTulips · 04/10/2019 16:07

I would be livid and would not let him back onto my property. He brought illegal drugs into your home. Even if they were just in his pocket (which I don’t believe) that should be a sackable offence on its own.

TheQueef · 04/10/2019 16:08

I would refuse to have him back and rethink the entire company.
Plasterer is taking the piss but boss sounds iffy too.

coconuttelegraph · 04/10/2019 16:09

You're entitled to choose who works in your own home surely, whether he's fired or not is up to his boss. Tell the boss you don't want those workers on your jib

Whydothesethingshappentome · 04/10/2019 16:13

I'd just ask for 2s personally

Yes of course, having spent 80k so far on the project and being there with my 1 year old son I absolutely should have taken a chill pill and joined him smoking weed! Silly me!

I know the head builder pretty well and trust him generally/his work. I am just not sure if I am being unreasonable/too harsh to order someone off the job for this. But equally I am fairly outraged that he thought this was ok/how many more times has this happened?!

OP posts:
CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/10/2019 16:15

Tell his boss that you don't want to have him take his 2nd chance in your home. If he comes back then you will cancel the job, pay him off for work done to date, and will find someone else who will do the job legally!

That is non negotiable! Laws have been broken on your premises.... and yes you bloody well are a prim and proper, stuck up home owning bitch! He'd had better believe it!

ChicCroissant · 04/10/2019 16:16

Should be no smoking in the house at all, whole firm sounds pretty slack really.

easyandy101 · 04/10/2019 16:16

You asked what id do in this situation, not what you should do Grin

CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/10/2019 16:17

Boss tried to say the guy carries weed around in his pocket and that’s the smell You don't have that in writing do you? Insurances etc....

MySonIsAlsoNamedBort · 04/10/2019 16:20

I'd be more annoyed about the cigarette stink than someone smoking dope.

Jaxhog · 04/10/2019 16:21

Yes! He's broken the law and has to go. Immediately. Totally outrageous.

We had something similar a few years ago. The plumber turned up drunk and I told him to leave. The builder was fine, although it did delay the finish for a week. I don't know if he actually sacked him, but he never appeared on our site again.

Merryoldgoat · 04/10/2019 16:22
  1. Is the renovation going well and are you happy with the work?

If ‘yes’ I’d probably express my anger in no uncertain terms, make it clear there is to be no smoking in the house of any kind and ensure the idiot on site is aware.

I think the thing to concentrate on is getting the house properly finished.

Juells · 04/10/2019 16:24

For the next ten years, every time you go upstairs you'll smell cigarettes and weed, even if the smell is long gone. A heavy smoker stayed in my spare bedroom for a couple of weeks, I had a dreadful job getting rid of the smell - and I'm an occasional smoker, so not fanatical about tobacco. I'd want him off the job. If the boss puts up with that, what else does he put up with? The things that dodgy builders can do are legion. Plus which, now that you've complained about him he'll want to get his own back slyly.

sillysmiles · 04/10/2019 16:25

Currently doing renovations to out house too. None of the builders smoke in the house - ever. And we've never had to say it.

Aside from the smoking thing - in my experience you need to check the work daily to make sure things are the way you want them.

Juells · 04/10/2019 16:27

PS my feelings may be coloured by the fact that the mother of a friend was sued by a painter who fell off a ladder, drunk, and broke his leg. Can't remember the outcome.

Howtohelp123 · 04/10/2019 16:34

I'd pay them for the work they've done up until now and ask them to leave. I would not want some pothead working on my home. And those Boss clearly doesn't give a damn so what kind of company is he/she running.

Boysey45 · 04/10/2019 16:42

I'd finish the firm, pay them for what they have done so far and that's it.
Very bad attitude of the boss to fob you off as well. I'd be more bothered about the work being fucked up than the breaking of the law aspect.
Last thing you want is a bad job being done.
