NC because I have told this story to all my friends and family this afternoon in a fit of outrage and don’t want to be recognised under normal username

Having a house renovated. Went to check on it today unexpectedly (as id been yesterday and told contractors see you next week). Went in and called “hello”, no answer. Go to first floor and see someone gassing it up the stairs to the second floor. Master bedroom REEKS of marijuana. A boarded up window in yesterday had been removed in what I can only assume was an attempt to hide smell. Go up to third floor which REEKS of cigarette smoke and find a dopey plasterer there acting shifty and moronic and “working”.

What would you do in this situation?

I would put what you said in your OP in writing. Add in that you are concerned about
a, the legal aspects of drugs being on your property.
b. Smoking while on your property and while he is supposed to be working ( your are after all paying him to be there) and removing the boarding on the window to facilitate this.
c. Your concerns about the H&S aspects of him working while under the influence and the quality of the work he is doing.
d. whether it will be safe for him to be driving home if his judgement is impared. ( You are after all aware that he appears dopey)
e. Ask him how he will ensure that the smell of the smoke and weed does not linger in your property.
You are entitled to say no smoking of any type in your property and you don't want this workman in your property any more.

MirandaGoshawk · 04/10/2019 17:11

Unacceptable. It's unprofessional, as is the boss's attitude. I don't think the man should lose his job, but they both need to get their act together before their business goes down the pan. I too would pay them for the work done so far and terminate their contract.

LookingForAlaskas · 04/10/2019 17:15

Tell boss he is off the job or they’re all off the job.

Are builders that quick and easy to replace? I’m guessing not

It wouldn’t be a factor in my decision to end their contract tbh.

Boysey45 · 04/10/2019 17:24

If its a big job with a lot of money involved it will be straightforward to get someone else.I'd be inclinded to put all over their social media reviews as well why you finished the company.

Boysey45 · 04/10/2019 17:25

Inclined that should read.

Whydothesethingshappentome · 04/10/2019 17:26

I don’t want any bad blood. Replacing the builder at this point isn’t really an option. If the man stays will it be worse as he will resent me, or if he goes will it be worse as the team will?

We are halfway through and it’s at a very complicated point. Also I like the work that’s been done otherwise and I know the main guy and he’s good. It’s just this one person I now have an issue with.

Deathraystare · 04/10/2019 17:29

Springfan - absolutely! How bloody dare the Boss make light of it??!!

Surely it is just as bad as turning up at an office off your tits, in fact -if using machinery - worse!

Lllot5 · 04/10/2019 17:31

Can you ask the boss that particular plasterer isn’t working on your house any more.
No he knows you’ve complained he could do all sorts to sabotage the rest of the build.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 04/10/2019 17:51

To be honest, if your house is a shell and is getting plastered and they're doing a good job then I would tell them off but I wouldn't be too bothered.

Good tradespeople are like hens teeth. If his work is great then I'd overlook it.

Probably not popular- but I just want the job done.

FeelingUseless100 · 04/10/2019 18:07

Smoking of any kind is not allowed inside my house. One thing to have a fag hanging out of your mouth all day when you are working outside, another to smoke INSIDE, which will permeate plaster, fabrics, pretty much anything.

I would be less pissed off about the legality, more that he’s permanently damaging my home with the irreversible smell, and will doubtless do a shit job stoned.

I’d be telling the main boss I’m not a moron, I can tell the difference between a joint having been smoked and a faint whiff off his pocket.

I’d be making it clear he needs not return to my job.

FeelingUseless100 · 04/10/2019 18:11

In any other job you would not be let off for smoking weed on the job once unsupervised.

Fluffsmum · 04/10/2019 18:34

Yes. The smell of smoke will permeate the new plaster- they shouldn't smoking anything in the house! I'd be furious.

Greatnorthwoods · 04/10/2019 19:09

If the quality of work is good, the project is on time and on budget., I wouldn’t have a issue with it as long as they get rid of the smell.

ChicCroissant · 04/10/2019 19:19

There will be no way to get rid of the smell though.

Sunshine93 · 04/10/2019 19:22

Just tell the boss you don't want him working on your home. If the boss wants to give him a second chance on the next project that's up to him

Sunshine93 · 04/10/2019 19:24

He's a plasterer he will get other work. It's not like you are ruining his life. I doubt the others will do a bad job because of it. They will surely just think their mate is an idiot either for doing it or for getting caught (depending on their perspective)

WhatTiggersDoBest · 04/10/2019 19:42

I'd go apeshit.
If I was being as polite as I could be in this situation, I'd tell the head builder that the smell of something being burnt never smells the same as when it's in someone's pocket. I'd tell them that you need him off the job because you're allergic to you or your LO getting cancer from someone else's crappy negligence. I'd tell them I couldn't let that man into my house again. And I'd point out the HSE would be down on this if they heard about it happening in the workplace, especially if it caused an accident.

But I'm really, really not okay with people smoking that shit anywhere near me or my loved ones.

Icantthinkofanewname87 · 05/10/2019 00:37

Some of you are ridiculous. I wouldn’t care at all.
