Should I Report Them?

TheQueef · 03/10/2019 16:12

AIBU to think people are just too fucking eager to report others?
My nosey neighbour has asked me this morning to join her in reporting our postman. Heinous crime of filling his water bottle up from someone elses outside tap while they are out.
Why is it straight to nuclear option?
Why are we so eager to report every little thing to authority?
Someone makes noise - report them.
No car tax - report them.
Eats sweets at work - report them.
Built a wall - report them.
Has a boyfriend - report them.
Claims benefit - report, report, report...

We all have personal limits and moral obligations. Some things bother me more than others but unless it's harming someone or dangerous I'd struggle to report.

Is it me? Am I imagining this gleeful, weasely push to report?

Maybe you should call 101 about it?

Jellybeansincognito · 03/10/2019 17:01

It’s not like he’s filling up a paddling pool with it, just a drink.
It wouldn’t exactly cost much.

Giving someone a bottle of your tap water is hardly generosity at its finest.

mumwon · 03/10/2019 17:02

we use to live opposite a spinney - it was half way round our postman's round - he use to disappear there everyday for 5 minutes Grin maybe

SilverChime · 03/10/2019 17:05

I report because nowadays if you tell someone to stop doing something the best outcome you can expect is being told to fuck off and the worst is being punched or stabbed.

TheQueef · 03/10/2019 17:09

The letterbox is at the front, postie made the mistake of going around the SIDE of the house Shock so she knew 'he was up to something's plus he parks his post trolley jobby at the end of the ginnel so his cards were marked already.
Nosey neighbour is a bit of an extreme case but I must admit we don't have dog poo on paths or leaf litter. She's constantly on about the council and street farce Grin

It really niggles me that some people are happy to stick the boot in and risk someone's job...just because they can, pull the pin, roll the grenade in sit back and enjoy the show. Angry

One of my neighbours reported me to the RSPCA for cruelty to my rabbit

I don’t have a rabbit, I was simply storing an empty rabbit hutch in my garage for a friend. He shouldn’t have been nosing in my garage in the first place but why not just ask me?

Another of my neighbours reported me to the police for loud music a couple of weeks ago. My daughter’s 18th birthday, the first party we’ve had in the 15 years we’ve lived there and it was only 8:30pm Police came round, said the volume was fine and not excessive but could we turn it down at 11pm. He was mightily pissed off that the police didn’t arrest us/take the stereo equipment (my iPad) away

We had weeks and weeks of noise from him evenings and weekends when he was building his own extension

seaweedandmarchingbands · 03/10/2019 17:12

Like I said, I wouldn’t report it, but it’s still cheeky. If it was your neighbour using your tap, most people on here would say they were a CF. This is typical MN: emotional judgments based on someone wearing a uniform?

Sewrainbow · 03/10/2019 17:14

She should have offered to fill it up for him!

Chloe9 · 03/10/2019 17:15

I always use the 999 rule. Like, if I told a police officer would they laugh at me/think I was a bored entitled busy body/nuisance or would they be on it. If I wouldn't ring 999 or a solicitor it's probably not worth the hassle. I have unlimited minutes on my mobile plan, but life is short. So if you're not abusing somebody or something or hurting someone in a big way, I'll let it lie.

I would offer the postman a bottle of Evian or a nice brew next time I have to sign for something though.

dentydown · 03/10/2019 17:19

Someone reported me for dressing my baby girl in “boys clothes” because apparently I wanted a boy.
A week before she was born her brothers chose her clothes. It was Pokemon and mine craft t-shirts (age 2-3) but because it was hot weather she was wearing them as a night shirt with just a nappy.
Apparently a concerned parent reported me, I wasn’t too fussed about all in pink outfits which was worrying!

TheCanyon · 03/10/2019 17:21

Your neighbour really needs to get a grip. I couldnt be arsed if my postie came in and filled up from the kitchen tap nevermind the garden one.

Itsallpetetong · 03/10/2019 17:22

I hope you told your neighbour that it was very unkind of her to watch the postman fill his water bottle up with water that is likely not be drinkable when she could have offered to do it for him.

Why wouldn’t it be drinkable? Ours runs off the same pipe that feeds our kitchen tap, it’s all the same water supply.

WorraLiberty · 03/10/2019 17:22

There's no comparison there at all. The postie was already legitimately on the property, obviously away from their own home and thirsty.

"My neighbour was returning something to me, got locked out of their house, was really thirsty and filled their water bottle from my tap".

That ^^ would be the comparison and no, I don't think even the most miserable of MNetters would think that made them a CF.

MrsFezziwig · 03/10/2019 17:23

There are off-road motorcyclists driving around on a piece of land near me. The land is home to lots of different types of wildlife, so as well as being a noise nuisance (sometimes in the middle of the night) they are endangering said wildlife, as well as anyone who is legally using the bridle paths on the land.
Every time I encounter them or hear them I report them. I don’t give a stuff if that makes me weaselly in the eyes of some internet randoms (I’m certainly not gleeful as the online form is a swine to fill in) but I feel that “live and let live” shouldn’t only apply in one direction.
But reporting someone for filling a water bottle - ffs.

Lllot5 · 03/10/2019 17:24

It would be cheeky for your neighbour to do it because they have access to their own water supply.
How can you begrudge a bottle of water out the tap I don’t know.

PumpkinP · 03/10/2019 17:24

I’ve noticed people very keen to report to SS on here over every little thing.

seaweedandmarchingbands · 03/10/2019 17:24

WorraLiberty

My postie has no need to near our outside tap, which is round the back of our house. I wouldn’t be happy to find him there, so no, I don’t think it is legitimate at all. But we can agree to differ on that.

seaweedandmarchingbands · 03/10/2019 17:25

Lllot5

I don’t begrudge it. If the postman asked for water I’d give it to him.

Chloe9 · 03/10/2019 17:27

@dentydown

That's hilarious. I have had comments about dressing my "daughters" in blue, they are very pretty little boys but I'm sure I'd get told off for dressing them in pink too. Especially once they heard their fairly masculine names.

walkintheparc · 03/10/2019 17:28

I hope you told your neighbour that it was very unkind of her to watch the postman fill his water bottle up with water that is likely not be drinkable when she could have offered to do it for him

This, poor postman! To drink from a hosepipe tap he must have been desperate!

Illegal things that put others out, or if people in danger = report
Everything else MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS

DrDetriment · 03/10/2019 17:29

It happens on MN too. I've seen posts reported for no other reason than someone disagrees with them.

Doormat247 · 03/10/2019 17:30

To be fair I'd be pissed off if someone was using my water as I'm on a meter and am very frugal with it. Certainly wouldn't be reporting it on behalf of someone else though.
Why wouldn't you report someone breaking the law such as having no car tax or committing benefit fraud? These people ARE causing harm!

formerbabe · 03/10/2019 17:30

@PumpkinP

I’ve noticed people very keen to report to SS on here over every little thing

Yes, it's insane. I've read posts from people who have wanted to report other parents for raising their voice at their own children. It's ridiculous. Yet, a load of posters will encourage it just in case!

timshelthechoice · 03/10/2019 17:30

Whilst for the most part I agree I would not hesitate to report someone whom I knew wasn't paying car tax or anyone drink driving.

AutumnRose1 · 03/10/2019 17:31

Denty "Someone reported me for dressing my baby girl in “boys clothes” because apparently I wanted a boy."

Reported you to whom?

OP your neighbour sounds awful.
