Best Ever Singer?

AIBU to be a nosy caah and ask who you think the best singer the world has ever seen is?

Mine is Freddie Mercury. I've just seen the ad for Amazon music (I think that's what it was) where it's just his voice singing Somebody To Love, music drowned out, and Sweet.Baby.Jesus, it gave me goosebumps. If I didn't have alopecia, my hair would be standing on end, I tell you Grin Wow, could that man sing!

I told DP and he said, "meh, he was alright." Shock

Who are your favourites? And any particular song where they're at their best?

Ella Fitzgerald, Luther Vandross and Chaka Khan for me. Michael Jackson, Axl Rose, Nat King Cole, Whitney, Amy Winehouse, Mary J Blige, George Michael and Celine Dion are also right up there for me.

Tellmetruth4 · 03/10/2019 10:16

Oh yes and of course Freddie Mercury.

Tellmetruth4 · 03/10/2019 10:18

And Marvin Gaye!

LittleAndOften · 03/10/2019 10:19

The West End is full of astonishing singers who don't get the recognition of recording stars. I've been moved to tears by Mazz Murray (various shows) and Rachel Tucker (Wicked) because their performances were so incredibly powerful. Although any live stage performance makes me emotional!

Jonsi
Brett Anderson
Unthank sisters

emsmum79 · 03/10/2019 10:51

Aretha Franklin
Otis Redding
Freddie Mercury
Elvis Presley

All get my vote

But the harmonies of people like The Everly Brothers and Simon and Garfunkel were fab

Oh yeah, the EB sounded beautiful together.

When Roy Orbison sings The Comedians my heart could break. It is hauntingly beautiful

In Dreams breaks my heart, you can really hear his emotion when he's singing, especially sadder since he suffered quite a few tragedies in his life :(

Ooh Jeff Buckley-good call.

His version of Hallelujah is very haunting. I'll have to go back and have another listen, but there's a part that makes me jump everytime I hear it. I think the guitar is very soft and then his voice comes in really sharp and loud-another one that gives me chills.

Brendan Urie

Whenever he would sing on a song with Fall Out Boy, I could never tell whether it was Brendan singing or Patrick Stump. They sound very similar when together, but nothing alike on seperate songs Confused What do you think?

And Ariana Grande, tbh I've never really paid attention to her because her music isn't really my cup of tea, but seeing her come up a lot on here I looked on Youtube and wow, she's a lot better than I imagined.

I felt that with Rita Ora too, when she was a judge on X Factor. She sang with one of her 'categories' in the final and her voice was incredible. Up there with all the cemented divas, and I just wondered why she doesn't sing like that more on her singles. The songs I'd heard her in, she sounded very generic and boring, but on X Factor it was like hearing another person!

Freddie Mercury and Delta Goodrem.

Amazing people 🎵 🎤

glasshouse · 03/10/2019 12:50

I love K D Lang, especially when she sings Hallelujah, absolutely love that version.

Drivemecrazy1974 · 03/10/2019 13:31

Have to agree with the earlier poster saying Neil Tennant - Being Boring is one of my all time favourite songs - makes me feel nostalgic for a time that I was not alive in! Also love his voice on, Jealousy and Love Comes Quickly - this is why it's too difficult to just choose one or two singers with the best voice - so many have good and bad points!
Oh, and now, for some unknown reason, Paul Young has popped into my head! Too many singers, not enough time!

VeryQuaintIrene · 03/10/2019 13:48

Ella Fitzgerald.

HazelBite · 03/10/2019 14:05

Freddie Mercury, George Michael, Rag n Bone Man.
Joan Baez

DrMaryMalone · 03/10/2019 15:43

Thought of another couple. Tina Arena and the lead singer of Divine comedy whose name escapes me atm!

Crinklesmile · 03/10/2019 15:49

Stevie Nicks.
Richard Ashcroft

haverhill · 03/10/2019 15:49

Steve Marriott of the Small Faces. Many later singers including Robert Plant admitted they nicked his style, he was so good. Tin Soldier is the best vocal he did IMO.

Kate Bush has a mesmerising voice; it's so pure yet warm and powerful.

SerenDippitty · 03/10/2019 16:27

Jimmy Helms - this song is just incredible.
