Best Ever Singer?

AIBU to be a nosy caah and ask who you think the best singer the world has ever seen is?

Mine is Freddie Mercury. I've just seen the ad for Amazon music (I think that's what it was) where it's just his voice singing Somebody To Love, music drowned out, and Sweet.Baby.Jesus, it gave me goosebumps. If I didn't have alopecia, my hair would be standing on end, I tell you Grin Wow, could that man sing!

I told DP and he said, "meh, he was alright." Shock

Who are your favourites? And any particular song where they're at their best?

Oh and how could I forget Janis Joplin?

DarlingNikita · 05/10/2019 13:01

Shane McGowan singing a Rainy Night in Soho
Oh yes. One of the greats.

@AlliKaneErikson

(Am a voice coach so hopefully know a little bit about it!).

Can I ask you something I'm curious about, if you don't mind?

Does vibrato happen naturally when a singer is going full on, or does it have to be learned through voice training? I love the sound of it, it always sounds natural, but I've tried it after a few drinks and it doesn't happen, it feels like it would have to be forced?

Sinead O'Conner did a beautiful version of A Rainy Night in Soho a few weeks ago, it's on YouTube, sorry not sure how to link but it's worth a look if you're a fan of the song. Agree, Shane McGowan sounds great singing this.

sleepingbeautyaurora · 05/10/2019 21:29

There are so many good singers I can't just pick one. As a teen I really liked Christina aguilera but I have no idea if she still has a nice voice and she is looking a bit worse for wear now too.

PlasticPatty · 05/10/2019 21:29

There you go.

sleepingbeautyaurora · 05/10/2019 21:30

I do think that Dolores O Riordan had a superb voice.

woodhill · 05/10/2019 21:45

Definitely

I like Don Maclean, Nielsen, Tony Hadley

sleepingbeautyaurora · 05/10/2019 21:51

Louis Armstrong, Edith Piaf,

Violetparis · 05/10/2019 21:52

Also Ella Fitzgerald and Joni Mitchell and alanais morisette

Sheisgettingbig · 05/10/2019 21:57

People saying Florence and the machine etc need to have a serious word with themselves and get a musical education. Maybe widen your cultural influences.

sleepingbeautyaurora · 05/10/2019 21:59

The lead singer from evanescence (I think her name is Amy ) and axl from guns n roses

sleepingbeautyaurora · 05/10/2019 22:02

Bobobobobob · 05/10/2019 22:04

William McCarthy of Augustines. Check him out if you haven't heard of him. So much passion.

Hey1256 · 05/10/2019 22:08

DonttouchthatLarry · 05/10/2019 22:28

Although I'm not yet 50 and love my rock music, I think Matt Monro and Andy Williams are 2 of the best singers ever. Such rich, warm, effortless voices which instantly take me back to my childhood (which may be why I love them so much).

Cinammoncake · 05/10/2019 22:28

Aretha

Dontbugmemalone · 05/10/2019 23:21

Olly Alexander from years and years, thier acoustic versions of songs are amazing. They are just as good live.
Christina Aguilara- don't like her music but she has a great voice
Chris Cornell
Lead singer from Kings of Leon
Ariana Grande- again don't like her music but she can sing anything with ease.

I absolutely adore him, he can do no wrong.

But I don't consider him to have an amazing voice. He's just alright. It's his lyrics and the music that do it for me and his gorgeousness but his voice is not amazing, in my opinion.
