To expect holiday park to do more.

We’ve come to a UK holiday park for the week. This morning we woke up to no water. Phoned reception to find that there was a burst water main through the night. The holiday park has its own water supply.

We were able to pick up 3 x 500ml bottles of water but that was it. We were told that the supple should be back on by lunch time. We decided to head out and made our way back about 3ish. Still no water. Again phoned the reception and asked for an update. I was informed there was no update, I then asked if there was a plan in place if there was still no water for the rest of the day. I was told, there was no plan and that he wasn’t sure what his manager had been told.

For the size of the holiday park, I would have thought they should really have a plan in place and that all staff members should know what the plan im situations like this. The on-site shop now has no water, we will have to drive out to get some. We also have friends who stay near by so we can shower/bath the toddler at theirs.

Would I be within my rights to put in a complaint about the lack of information, lack of plan and lack of bottled water.

I'm sure you won't want to share publicly but this exact same thing happened to me this year and I'm wondering if it is the same place.
We had to go to the bar to order bottled water for our 2 year old as they had ran out of the free stuff. Didn't get offered any discounts or refunds. Won't book with that company again now

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 02/10/2019 16:45

Anyone who starts a sentence with "not being rude but" is actually quite the opposite. You ARE being rude and your comment doesn't even make sense with the OP's problem

WelcomeToShootingStars · 02/10/2019 16:47

They probably don't have any information to give you as they'll be at the mercy of their local water board. It's been less than a day.

It's not ideal but it isn't that bad either.

anyoneseenmykeys · 02/10/2019 16:50

I disagree, it is bad. The bare minimum to provide is drinking water and access to loos. Their way of not dealing with the situation is appalling.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 02/10/2019 16:50

we need to bathe our toddler every other night in emollient due to his skin (it’s one of the few things that help keep his eczema under control).

And you can still do this, you child doesn’t need to be submerged in water to be able to apply cream, sponge/cloth bath, and cream, sponge/bath... fab with water.

I also have a child with acute eczema, he has bandages wrapped around him nightly, we would still be able to apply his cream and change his bandages with bottled water.

I believe if after 8-12 hours they should be supplying bottled water to customers to drink, missing a bath/shower is not an issue.

OMGshefoundmeout · 02/10/2019 16:52

I don’t know how they can legally stay open if people can’t flush the loos and guests and catering staff can’t wash their hands? I would expect if a situation like this that lasts longer than about 6 hours the Park to be closed and people given refunds and sent home or relocated to other sites. I’m amazed a big company like Haven doesn’t have this under control.

OMGshefoundmeout · 02/10/2019 16:54

I’m not being rude BUT means I am fully aware this is rude.

Whenever a sentence contains the word BUT you can ignore the first part and just focus on what comes after the BUT.

PiggyPokkyFool · 02/10/2019 16:57

I just looked it up to see where it was and the first thing that came up was a Trip Advisor review. Seems this isn't the first time - hope it is fixed a bit quicker on this occasion.

This is the first time we have stopped with Haven.

We stopped for three nights four days....three out of the four days there was no water....so no shower....no drinks....you couldn't flush the toilet....total nightmare with having two kids.

We ended up leaving a day early because of this.

How they got away with this from a H&S point of view is beyond me....

They offered a £50 voucher to spend with them again (very bold) after complaining a second time they offered £130 towards our next holiday...again I don't think they are getting it...

Drogosnextwife · 02/10/2019 16:59

Caravans don't tend to have baths so you won't be able to bathe your baby in emollient anyway.

Clangus00 · 02/10/2019 17:12

There’s a Co-op 5 minutes from Craig Tara
In Ayr/Prestwick you have 2 Iceland, 3 Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, 2 Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons and COUNTLESS garages/ corner shops.
You will be able to get as much bottled water as you like.

Purpleartichoke · 02/10/2019 17:18

We have been in this position before. They need to at least make arrangements for drinking water. In our situation, everything was fixed in 24 hours. I think that was reasonable for an unforeseen circumstance. We just chalked it up to bad luck. Had it not been fixable in 24 hours, I would expect a refund on the time without water and any remaining days so you could head home or elsewhere.

www.ofwat.gov.uk/households/supply-and-standards/supply-interruptions/
If it's an upstream outage then you should definitely be getting what is in that link from the water company if not the park, can't tell if they need to meet those requirements if it's on site though.

timshelthechoice · 02/10/2019 17:20

You shouldn't have to buy bottled water because the holiday park that you paid a packet to has water problems.

It's also freezing up here, but no hot bath or shower to warm up.

I'd be fucking raging and expect a full refund for the days you're without water.

Holy hell, I once stayed in a Premier Inn during a heatwave and they could provide only 1 fan per room. It was 33 degrees in the room we took photos, complained and got a full refund right away.

Clangus00 · 02/10/2019 17:29

It was 18 degrees in Ayr this afternoon, @tims hardly freezing (although I had to scrape the car this morning, so I see your point there).
Definitely need a refund.

That’ll be handy for all the folks with cars. Not so much for those without

Clangus00 · 02/10/2019 17:40

Even if they walked to the farm park, they could walk to the co or get a bus/taxi.
It’s hugely inconvenient, I get that, but if they NEED it, they’d do it.

reginafelangee · 02/10/2019 17:42

Not being rude but you sound like one of the stereotypical English tourists who go on hold to Spain etc and complain about the heat and eat a full English breakfast because of 'foreign muck'

Of course you are being rude. Very rude.

Butterfly84 · 02/10/2019 17:43

I would want some money back.

Yes, there's little they can do other than arrange to get the water supply fixed as soon as possible, but it's the fact they haven't kept the customers informed. Also, I wouldn't be happy without being able to have a shower before I started the day this morning.

bobsyourauntie · 02/10/2019 17:43

If the water has a leak, then the water company might be responsible for providing water, but the onus is on the park to ensure that their guests have essentials like water, then take it up with the water company.

Obviously they must have a lot of very pissed off guests at the moment, but they should be providing water and alternatives.

A park I stayed at in Cornwall had to close the swimming pool and they offered all guests free swimming at the nearby leisure centre. A good park would be on top of this.

A review on Trip Advisor shows that they had a similar problem in 2016 and it doesn't look like they did much to help the guests then either.!

Passthecherrycoke · 02/10/2019 17:44

I’d go home tbh, or possible check into a hotel with water if I had the ££.

I work for a company who has to deal with customers affected by similar and there isn’t really anything you can do. We have an emergency plan which involves taking water and liaising with the water company but someone like a holiday park probably doesn’t have that level of operation

Michaelbaubles · 02/10/2019 17:48

If the water company cut off water to households they provide bowsers/crates of bottled water for people to take - unlimited. And how can someone give a baby a sponge bath or wipe down with no water? They shouldn’t have to pay for bottles of water FFS, that’s just ridiculous. There should be lots available and it should be free. That’s a total basic.

Passthecherrycoke · 02/10/2019 17:51

But the water company pre order that water in large containers

Sending Dave down to Tesco to buy water is a bit daft- depending on the size of the park he’d need a truck and loads of trollies, Tesco wouldn’t allow him to buy up their whole water aisle, the local residents would all be doing the same AND it would cost a fortune

Cleverplayonwords · 02/10/2019 17:53

They should be giving you a refund for the day there's been no water.

They have already paid for their water. They paid the park when booking. Why should they be hauling bottles of water on a bus and then back to caravans with children in tow at their own cost? Even if the guests have cars, it's still not on them to be going out buying water.

lyralalala · 02/10/2019 18:18

There's a huge difference between doing the 6/7 minute walk to Heads of Ayr and a 30 min walk to the co-op, then humphing water back along that path by the road.

Do you realise how expensive the bus that comes into Craig Tara is? It's not a quid or two!
