Christmas in October!

I've just been to John Lewis to look at the kitchenware - however the kitchenware is no longer in its usual place as most of the floor is now filled with Christmas trees, lights and decorations!

AIBU to think it's far too early for this?

I love Christmas and get very excited picking out decorations etc but could we not at least get Halloween out of the way first?

Makes me think shops are finding selling tough. Getting a bit desperate.

TheNestedIf · 01/10/2019 19:40

You're lucky you've only discovered this in October. DP sent me a picture, outraged, at finding Christmas Family Circle in Sainsbury's in June.

What was wrong with having Spring, Summer, Winter and Autumn as opposed to Christmas, Easter and Sport?

Bluewavescrashing · 01/10/2019 19:42

I think there's the demand for Christmas stuff because people fixate on it as something to look forward to when the weather is crap, cold, wet, possible seasonal affective disorders, Brexit worries etc.

I don't see the need personally as we reuse decorations each year and most presents I buy are available all year round. I do buy early due to autumn and winter family birthdays. But if the demand is there from customers, it will happen.

There’s Christmas things out everywhere! 🙈

I was in a shop recently and commented on all the Christmas items and how it didn’t seem to come out as early years ago. The lady said it was because these days most people get paid monthly so people tend to shop earlier. I’m not sure how accurate this shop assistant was but I guess it makes sense. A lot of people are struggling and technically there’s now only 2 other days until the big day 😭

Fortunately we get paid weekly 🤣

DA1115 · 01/10/2019 19:57

The worst thing for me is Easter eggs are always on sale a couple days after Boxing Day in my local co op. Now that is taking the complete mick. 😒

Chloemol · 01/10/2019 20:02

Local garden centre has Christmas stuff. I have sky tv, Sony movies have had thier Sony Christmas channel running from beginning September,

Ticklemeelmo · 01/10/2019 20:07

I agree it's way too early, however John Lewis have always put their Christmas stuff out around now

cadburyegg · 01/10/2019 20:07

I like Christmas things being available early, i started my shopping in the summer. I like to spread the cost.

Thelistwizard · 01/10/2019 20:10

Some people like to be organised by starting early. Some people don’t. Just don’t buy anything until after Halloween then

Cleverplayonwords · 01/10/2019 20:10

Its too early but it's been like this for years.

OhioOhioOhio · 01/10/2019 20:12

Yes. After Halloween is plenty of time.

chellochello · 01/10/2019 20:14

I've been seeing stuff online for a while now and get that people want to start shopping early but was just a bit shocked at the full on Christmas displays just felt a bit wrong

People are buying Christmas things earlier due to the other thing happening on Halloween.

slashlover · 01/10/2019 20:20

I used to work in a supermarket and every year some of the Christmas stock went out in September and people moaned EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR.

"Mince pies at this time of year!!!!"
Yes, and people are buying them.

Ilovechocolate01 · 01/10/2019 20:21

As soon as one retailer does it the others follow so as not to miss out on customers spending money. Same as how Black Friday is 3 fecking weeks instead of the one American day that it should be. Retailers are getting more competitive as shoppers are getting more savvy and looking for bargains

FizzyIce · 01/10/2019 20:21

It does seem like it’s getting earlier and earlier .
I adore Christmas but it’s kind of taking the shine off it ,having it’s spread over 4 months!
I’ll be sick of it all by the 25th dec

Ifyousayso2019 · 01/10/2019 20:22

Yanbu. Home Alone 2 is currently on Film4. I refuse to watch even 30 seconds of it , far too early!!

1Morewineplease · 01/10/2019 20:25

Funny that we have borrowed Halloween from USA but they generally don’t get into the festive spirit until after Thanksgiving . I love Christmas but think it’s commercialised too early here. As to Halloween, it can get stuffed. Utterly stupid.

I love Christmas 🎄 But with all that's going on with Brexit and climate change seems in poor taste this year.
Definitely going to think more about buying loads of tat and find some new traditions this year.

BlockedandDeleted · 01/10/2019 20:30

Pretty sure that Halloween was imported to the US from Scotland...

Umm nope. This happens every year! Every single year. It’s weird that you haven’t noticed it before?

ForalltheSaints · 01/10/2019 20:35

I agree with you OP. Having family in the US, it seems as if little about Christmas starts until after Thanksgiving, so only about five weeks beforehand.

I wonder if double VAT on Christmas items until end of November would put a stop to it?

QuimJongUn · 01/10/2019 20:42

JL opens its Christmas department on the last week of September every year, so that's nothing new.

I don't mind one bit. Not everyone can buy all their decorations/gifts/food in one go in December - not just for financial reasons, but also because they can't carry it all in one or two goes, either (disabled/no car etc). Also, people bake/craft and so on months in advance, so need 'stuff'.

I think that 'getting into the festive spirit' isn't the same as 'the shops have got crackers in'. They're two separate things. I love having a Christmas shelf in one of the kitchen cupboards which I add to every week - seeing the shortbread, booze and chocolates stacking up over the next couple of months makes me happy. If it doesn't make you happy, and you're fortunate enough not to need to shop piecemeal, don't do it and don't let it bother you!

wifesupremacist · 01/10/2019 20:46

Trust me op we hate it too
