To be concerned? Intense itching from DS

DS is just shy of 2. In the last week or so he's had bouts of itching the palms of his hands. Really, really itching.

In the last 48 hours it's gotten a lot worse. He won't stop itching them!

No itching anywhere else.

There is absolutely no signs of anything on his palms/hands. Nothing.

He's never had the faintest hint of eczema or dry skin. His pals are completely smooth and look normal.

The itching has got so intense he's now really upset and it's like he's crying. The itching is now frantic and looks distressing. Again, absolutely nothing there.

He is his usual self otherwise. No distressing situations etc so I doubt it's stress related.

AIBU to be concerned? Should I try for an emergency GP appointment?

He isn't on any medication is he?

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 01/10/2019 14:29

Because that sounds like an allergic reaction of some kind.

sweetmotherog · 01/10/2019 14:30

thesnap No, nothing Sad

And I haven't changed washing stuff, put any new moisturisers etc on him or bubble baths

Try a few days of antihistamines. The pharmacist can help with what he can take.

bananallamas · 01/10/2019 14:32

Itchy hands can be a sign of other underlying medical problems. I would try for the GP today if you can, tomorrow if not. Even if it's not it sounds like this is now hurting/upsetting him so you need to find out the cause ASAP.

sweetmotherog · 01/10/2019 14:36

Just can't believe there's nothing there at the rate he's itching at!

It couldn't be hand foot and mouth disease? I think it would have come on quicker than that, but I know when DH caught it off DS (who was too little to explain his symptoms, but very distressed), he said he felt like his hands were burning.

sweetmotherog · 01/10/2019 14:46

Sum That comes with blistering though

I would ask a pharmacist. They will refer you to the GP if theymhave any concerns.

Areyoufree · 01/10/2019 14:54

I know that we are all too scared to "burden" the NHS these days, but this is exactly what a GP is for. Your GP will know if there are other things to look out for. Plus, if it is something that continues, you will have a record of the visit, along with any conclusions. I would take him to the GP. Flame away, Mumsnet, flame away!

NoSauce · 01/10/2019 14:56

I would get him checked out too. It sounds very uncomfortable and distressing for him, as there’s no obvious answers here I would let the GP take a look.

KUGA · 01/10/2019 14:57

If you scratch an itch for some reason it itches even more, something to do with your blood .
A bit like if someone has headlice you start scratching your head .
Makes sense to a degree.

Cleverplayonwords · 01/10/2019 14:58

GP. Unexplained itching like this should always be investigated.

Greatbootsboots · 01/10/2019 15:02

I had this once on my foot, and it was fungal. No rash or anything. They initially suspected dermatitis though.

gamerchick · 01/10/2019 15:05

Why haven't you given him an antihistamine? It's obviously an histamine reaction to something.

I'd definitely take him to be seen though even if it's advice.

EntropyRising · 01/10/2019 15:07

Itchy palms are one sign of liver distress, just have it checked out.

italianfiat · 01/10/2019 15:10

My response would be to try an anti-histamine before makeup g a routine GP appointment if it didn't help. Nothing in your posts would make me try to get an emergency appointment.

Have you got any piriton?

Idontwanttotalk · 01/10/2019 15:17

I'd be concerned enough for an emergency GP appointment or I'd telephone 111. If he isn't on medication, no changes to washing powder etc and he hasn't been bitten then blood tests will probably be taken to eliminate Liver, Kidney and blood issues.

italianfiat · 01/10/2019 15:22

Nobody ever goes to the GP and gets sent away with painkillers/antibiotics/antihistamines and a wait and watch approach on Mumsnet, it's straight to the blood tests, referrals and investigations.

In fact the more I read Mumsnet the more I think our GP's are negligent.

swingofthings · 01/10/2019 15:24

This requires a visit with the GP. Unexplained itching can v linked with liver issues. Likely but it needs to be checked.

ElizaDee · 01/10/2019 15:24

Aren't there some mites that burrow into the skin of your palms?

ElizaDee · 01/10/2019 15:25

Yes, scabies.

moreismore · 01/10/2019 15:26

I also think this warrants GP, especially as he’s so little and you can’t see any physical sign of a rash. If it was enough of a histamine reaction to cause that level of itch it would be red, raised, angry looking. So I don’t think antihistamines will help much.

Amazonfromkent · 01/10/2019 15:43

I'm sure it's nothing but when I was a child I started itching violently - turned out I had hepatitis A.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 01/10/2019 15:47

I’d get the child checked out ASAP, ds1 has this when he was little and he had an issue with his kidneys... he ended up on kidney dialysis to flush his kidneys out.

It might be nothing it might be something however with little ones you can’t be too safe.
