To wonder where your gaze should go at the dentist

When I was little I used to look at the reflection in the dentists goggles, as I got older I realised that was awkward (who the fuck wants someone creepy staring at or around their eyes)
I started staring at the light but that felt awkward too.
Now I’ve settled on shutting my eyes the full time.

It’s so strange but it’s something I’ve clearly overthought. Where is appropriate to gaze? Is shutting your eyes the safest? Imagine how creepy you’d look staring up at the dentists face?

Is there even a right answer? Where does everyone look?

actually eye tests are worse - when they have to get really close to examine your eyes

MereDintofPandiculation · 01/10/2019 14:57

If you're looking into someone's mouth from about a foot away, it is exceedingly difficult to see where their eyes are focussed. So it doesn't really matter where you look

Stickybeaksid · 01/10/2019 15:01

Deep into his eyes because he is very beautiful. Seriously, I close my eyes and listen to a podcast. My dentist doesn’t mind if you bring your headphones

UnfamousPoster · 01/10/2019 15:02

I don't tend to notice my dentist over the top of me (not that I'd mind - he is rather lovely!). He uses the mirror more to check things.

His son is a photographer though so he has a lightbox in the ceiling with a lovely picture in that I look at otherwise.

mindgoinground12 · 01/10/2019 15:04

My dentist has a where's wally picture in the Ceiling!! Changes evreytime I go to

FurrySlipperBoots · 01/10/2019 15:15

I close my eyes when the instruments are in my mouth, or I get claustrophobic. They do ask me anxiously if I'm ok every 5 seconds though so I think they worry I've passed out! When they're faffing around doing other stuff I look at the overhead TV screen, though there's no sound so it's not that interesting.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 01/10/2019 15:17

I have a tv, headphones and a remote control when I go to the dentist.

(not in the uk) Grin

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/10/2019 15:17

Up his/her nose?

NoTheresa · 01/10/2019 15:17

Ceiling!

Dontsayyouloveme · 01/10/2019 15:21

Never mind where your gaze should go! Where should your tongue go? I had an emergency replacement filling last week so his fingers were obviously in my mouth. My tongue kept wandering back to the tooth that he was working on, and in a desperate attempt to move it away, I ended up licking / tonguing nearly the entire length of his finger!! 😳😳😳

Wonderland18 · 01/10/2019 15:23

@FurrySlipperBoots they ask me if I’m okay every minute too! I wondered if that was fear I’d nodded off or light wincing.
either way it fuels the where should I look question in my head 🙈

I shut my eyes and recite something in my head over and over so my brain focuses on something else. Usually it's the lyrics to Iike big butts and i cannot lie.

Cleverplayonwords · 01/10/2019 15:24

I look up and off to the side slightly. My dentist is very handsome and I accidentally made full eye contact with him last time Blush

Winter2019 · 01/10/2019 15:24

I close my eyes, terrified of dentist

SuzieSunshine · 01/10/2019 15:53

I find the Optician a lot worse. Mine is absolutely gorgeous and I often wonder, while sitting in the dark room with him about 10 cm from my face, what would happen if I suddenly started kissing him................

FurrySlipperBoots · 01/10/2019 15:58

they ask me if I’m okay every minute too!

The trouble with that is the only answer is 'Ynainwwoorrrrrr', particularly if they're got one of those rubber gag things in your gob that make it feel like your jaw will disintegrate any minute.

FurrySlipperBoots · 01/10/2019 15:59

@SuzieSunshine

There's really only one way to find out! Give it a try next time you go, and be sure to report your findings on here!

Potatopia · 01/10/2019 16:01

Straight at their crotch.

Baguetteaboutit · 01/10/2019 16:02

On the telly they have on the ceiling with subtitles on.

Witching · 01/10/2019 16:03

Dentist once noticed me looking at him during treatment and told me to please look away Blush I've closed my eyes ever since.

ILearnedItFromABook · 01/10/2019 16:03

Thanks for the laugh!

I usually end up studying the boring panels on the ceiling. Some of them are oriented in one direction, some another. But it's really not the most interesting view! I wish they'd put something better up there. Occasionally I close my eyes, but that usually feels odd, too.

I sometimes wish I could just be knocked unconscious for any and all medical/dental procedures and appointments. By-pass the stress and awkwardness altogether! Blush

darkcloudsandrainstorms · 01/10/2019 16:07

The light.

My worst experience was with an optician who seemed to crawl all over me. I immediately changed to another company.

Whaaaat? Daft snowflakes Lol

Sooverthemill · 01/10/2019 17:22

I close my eyes, I hate going to the dentist because I have a really irritating chatty one who talks endlessly. Now when I go in I say ' can we just get this done as fast as possible with no chatting'. I'm sure she thinks she's being reassuring but I loathe small talk especially when someone has tools in my mouth! I never have fillings it's just literally her looking and poking and annual x rays.

Am wondering if mindgoinground12 is a patient of mine
