Dresses don't suit everyone

ThisIsAPun · 30/09/2019 19:39

My friend says that there's a dress for everyone, but I disagree.

There is no dress on earth that suits me.

I'm 5'1, size 10-12, shockingly shit figure due to big weight loss years ago (loose skin). I've tried every single fabric, style and colour dress-wise but NOTHING looks remotely nice or flattering on me.

I'd love to wear casual dresses in the day, and thought once I lost weight I would be able to, but I think I actually have less confidence now.

Some people just don't suit dresses, right?

I agree, some people just don't suit dresses I am nearly 6ft with big boobs - I look like a builder doing fancy dress as a drag queen, maxi dresses are particularly amusing - like a ship in full sail

YouJustDoYou · 30/09/2019 20:47

I can only wear 40s kind of fit/style dresses, which no one ever really does, because my bodyshape is so weird. Everything else, when I try it on, I just burst out laughing in the changing rooms.

IncrediblySadToo · 30/09/2019 20:51

YANBU

I look like a fucking table lamp in a dress

gavisconismyfriend · 30/09/2019 20:55

I’m apple shaped and short and wear shift dresses all the time. I’ve accepted I may not look fabulous in them, but I just love dresses so I wear them regardless!

MrsTumbletap · 16/10/2019 22:07

@anyoneseenmykeys what is this semi tucked top you speak of? I need it in my life!

jgjgjgjgjg · 16/10/2019 22:25

For those of you with big boobs, have a look at the Bravisimo clothing range. Their clothes are designed specifically for big boobs.

LizzieSiddal · 16/10/2019 22:29

I’m 5’2, slim with big boobs.

Dresses never fitted properly so I went on a sewing course and can now alter dresses. It’s changed my life- and spent all summer in dresses.

LizzieSiddal · 16/10/2019 22:31

Should say, as long as the dress fits you on the shoulders and boobs, you can often alter all the other bits(depending on where the zip is)

I’ve altered waists, dress length and sleeve length.

5foot5 · 16/10/2019 22:36

Have you tried House of Foxy

GrumpyHoonMain · 16/10/2019 22:38

I agree that dresses look better on women who are pear, cello, or hour glass shaped; but anyone who wants to wear a dress can pull it off. If you don’t want to that’s fine but it’s got nothing to do with your figure but everything to do with attitude.

longwayoff · 16/10/2019 22:45

I haven't worn a dress or skirt in twenty years or more, since the day I travelled to work with the back of my dress caught up in my knickers. Left the house, waited for bus, went upstairs and down again, got off and walked to work from there, all with my fat arse on display. About an hour and a half, entertaining the commuters of west London.Thankfully before Facebook and Utube otherwise it would have been around forever. Trousers only for me Smile

steff13 · 16/10/2019 22:47

It sounds like your shape might be inverted triangle. Have you googled for that specific body type?

WooMaWang · 16/10/2019 22:49

I find tops and skirts a bit easier than dresses. Dresses either fit my top (and are enormous everywhere else) or squash my boobs horribly but don't swamp me elsewhere. I don't even have that big a chest (28G) so it's quite annoying really.

BikeRunSki · 16/10/2019 22:53

The thing about dresses is that there are a lot more parts to fit than separates - overall length, torso length/waist position, chest size, hip size etc.

I have a very long back for my height. Abd look weirdly out of proportion in tops and skirts. I find it very difficult to find tops and dresses that fit, but when I do find a dress with the waist in the right place, it almost always really suits me.

DogsLoveLakes · 16/10/2019 22:55

I used to wear dresses all the time as they were comfy and simple but then had the revelation that although some may flatter by skimming over lumps and bumps, I look frumpy in every single one. Haven’t worn a dress since. I miss wearing them for the ease of it but can’t now unsee how I look. Am getting on a bit and size 18. I had a look at Popsy having heard about pretty dresses there but all I can see is frump. Or at least that’s how they’d look on me. Will stick to slim-fitting-bottoms-and-tunic uniform for now!

Drogosnextwife · 16/10/2019 22:56

I find the only dresses I can wear are ones with empire waists, even then they have to be nice and high, ike grecian style ones, and they are hard to come by and most are a bit frumpy.

WooMaWang · 16/10/2019 23:00

I have similar feelings about dresses on me @DogsLoveLakes.

Is it just me or do most of the differently named dresses on popsy seem to be exactly the same dress in a different material. Or with a slightly different neckline? I would have thought they would all fit exactly the same body shape, rather than having something for everyone.

DogsLoveLakes · 16/10/2019 23:15

@WooMaWang that’s what I thought. And I can’t see a single one that anyone apple shaped or with mum-tum/apron/delightful overhanging bit could get away with.

They’d be filed under ‘fun’ prints designed to endow the wearer with quirky personality Confused

Sceptre86 · 16/10/2019 23:52

I think some people just look better in separates rather than dresses. I am pear shaped with a narrow waist and small bust. I have wider hips and thighs. I tend to ho for knee length skater dresses as they cling to my top half and skim over my hips. Yanbu

*go for evn

7Days · 17/10/2019 00:00

I've had a couple of dresses that really suit me, which is no mean feet as I'm short and chubby and everything's heading south these days. Crazy prints though and cheap material. I keep thinking I'll bring one into a dressmaker and get her to use the nice dress as a template, except in nice fabric, and proper sleeves and neckline.
Yet I still haven't done it, does it seem like a reasonable ask?

InkyFingersInkyFace · 17/10/2019 00:03

Thought I'd have a peek at Boden and happened upon an expensive backwards cardiganjumperthing.

It's not a dress, probably isn't relevant to the thread, but the knit does look comfy... Except wouldn't the buttons dig into your back if you say
T back against a chair...

Found this website. Lagenlook
There’s got to be something, a blogger for apple shapes raves about it

AlexaAmbidextra · 17/10/2019 05:29

I can’t wear a lot of dresses. I’m 5’2’ with long legs but a very short body. The waist of normal dresses sits pretty much on my hips so pulls very unflatteringly.

AlexaAmbidextra · 17/10/2019 05:32

Just had a quick peek at Lagenlook. They are hideous, shapeless tents!
