No Annual Leave during school holidays

Dodoluded · 30/09/2019 11:49

I’ve just been told that because I don’t have a child I can’t take annual leave during school holidays as my line manager needs to take that time off for child care arrangements and one of us need to manage the team (I do this when she is not there).

Basically she’s taking a week off either side of Christmas and has worked one day per week over the summer holiday and taken the rest as unpaid leave.

There are already four months in the year when I am not allowed to take any annual leave due to my workload.

AIBU to not agree to the holidays leave thing? None of this was explained at interview or before my probationary period finished.

They have just refused a leave request for next year as it overlaps with school holidays by four days although she currently has no leave booked for this period.

Line manager was ok but has given me a giant chunk of work to do and I’m not sure where she expects me to fit it in

Do everything in writing.
List the things you need to get done and ask her to prioritise them.

Good luck!

Dodoluded · 06/10/2019 10:42

Thank you everyone for the advice! I’ll get everything in writing and ask her to prioritise.

Dodo has had a two hour chat with HR and has been offered a new job role within the Company. It seems a lot happened last week (my line manager fucked up a major contract and the CEO called our CEO and demanded that only Dodo handled the remedy to the mess).

I think Line Manager has handed in her notice but I am not sure on this.

👍

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 07/10/2019 18:59

Well done Op.

RandomMess · 07/10/2019 19:00

I am not surprised!!!

JudefromJersey · 07/10/2019 19:04

If I didn’t have children I wouldn’t want to have annual leave during school holidays. I’m sure their practice is illegal however and I’d speak to HR.

Disfordarkchocolate · 07/10/2019 19:05

Great news Smile

BoomBoomsCousin · 07/10/2019 19:06

That sounds like a good resolution for you! Is it a new role you want with prospects that are at least as good?

Potentially, depending on how much of the line manager’s “deal” was made by her in good faith and wasn’t just her trying it on a bit, I feel a bit sorry for her. It sounds like she negotiated a packaged that really worked for her and then had it pulled out from under her. Obviously it wasn’t something the company should have offered, but having done so, with line manager organizing her life around the arrangement, it would be pretty gutting to have that fall to pieces when she’s been keeping her end of things. Which isn’t to say you should suffer OP. You weren’t hired under the understanding you wouldn’t get any school vacation dates so you shouldn’t have that restriction placed on you. It’s very poor of whoever promised her something unsustainable and inappropriate in the first place.

Dodoluded · 07/10/2019 19:07

Thank you everyone, I really appreciated the support and the advice (I did the prioritise my tasks please email first thing).

I’m also getting all my overtime back as TOIL (that was a whole other saga...)

boom yes I agree with you. It is harsh but I don’t think that’s what they have done (I got told I was covering for her at half term next week first thing this morning, which was fine).

I think it may be more the contact screw up - it’s a high six figure contract.

OP posts:
wibdib · 07/10/2019 19:39

No wonder she didn’t want you to disappear off to your urgent hospital appointment if her screw up was all about to come to a head - I bet she was try to deflect some of the shot onto you as well as get you to sort stuff out that she could then take credit for too... Did the big bit of urgent work that she wanted you to do have anything to do with it?

Hope HR have hired and remunerated you as dodo the rescuing heroine technical whizz rather than did the great admin person with some tech skills! And that they have said yes to your holiday request for next year too.

Most of all hope you had a good rest at the weekend and are feeling much better.

Dartsplayer · 07/10/2019 19:40

Well done OP. They obviously recognise your hard work and don't want to lose you

Dodoluded · 07/10/2019 19:58

It’s not a technical whizz role but they have said I can process to one, it’s sort of (trying not to put myself) technical external relations. I’m flying internationally next week!

And I’m earning twice what I’m on currently and they have said they will backdate this for the summer:

I think it’s quite fair to be honest.

Fantastic outcome! Glad they value you so much. Clearly they took heed of the client feedback!

MulticolourMophead · 07/10/2019 20:11

That's great, they've recognised your worth.

As for line manager, I agree her not wanting you to take the urgent appointment was about getting you to help keep her out the shit. But she must have realised these sort of urgent appointments aren't made for giggles.

Hope you're feeling better, and they got to the bottom of whatever was causing the peach to grow.

Nearlyshitmypantsthere · 07/10/2019 20:20

Fantastic Dodo, great news x

namina · 07/10/2019 20:20

YANBU that's awful and very unfair

cstaff · 07/10/2019 20:27

What a result dodo. You can't have been expecting such an outcome. And not that I like to see anyone lose their job, but she really did bring that upon herself with her carry on.

YobaOljazUwaque · 07/10/2019 20:28

Excellent news!

Dodoluded · 07/10/2019 20:31

I was so so worried when HR emailed, thought I was going to lose my job. But they were so lovely. I talked, they talked, I talked some more, they talked some more. It was all fine.

Groovee · 07/10/2019 21:21

BoomBoomsCousin · 07/10/2019 21:26

That sounds brilliant! Well done, and good luck!

Crunchymum · 07/10/2019 22:15

Your salary has been doubled and backdated? Shock

Puzzledandpissedoff · 07/10/2019 22:58

my line manager fucked up a major contract and the CEO called our CEO and demanded that only Dodo handled the remedy to the mess

Don't you just love the sheer, poetic justice of it all Grin
