...to think that I will never get the smell of dog out of this house?! (And ask how you managed it?)

Just moved into a house whose previous owners had a very large dog. It had the run of the house. When we viewed the house, I expected it to smell of dog as there was a dog in it. (I do like dogs, although I wouldn't have one upstairs).

One of the members of my household has severe atopic asthma triggered by several things but worst of all by dog dander. (So we gave up on having dogs after the last one died of old age.) Since we've moved in, I have had the carpets shampooed, the house deep cleaned and I've changed the soft furnishings. I'm currently burning a massive citrus candle, and yet the living room and conservatory still really smell of dog. Help!

Was any furniture left behind? Have you washed down the walls?

If the smell's still lingering, it's ingrained somewhere ...

Sympathies. I have two cats and spent the weekend deep cleaning after them because of the latest flea horror show. So fed up.

Our house smelt of dog, to totally get rid we decorated everywhere, cleaned behind radiators I think definitely helped as did scrubbing all grouting in between tiles with bleach and bicarbonate of soda, and eventually got rid. Wiping down radiators with essential oil or fabric conditioner also helped.
I’d suggest the carpets are still harbouring smells and you may have to get rid if you can?

MatchaMuffin · 29/09/2019 20:22

Try getting the carpets done again, maybe with a specific pet smell removal product. Rug doctor sell a specific detergent for pet smells, no idea if it's any different to the normal one. Wash down walls if you haven't.

Worst case, you remove carpets and underlay and scrub the floorboards with detergent.

We have found a hepa air purifier really effective at removing cat dander from the air. Might be worth a go especially for your family members benefit - they are not that expensive. You need to get one powerful enough for the area.

SilentAndQuietLight · 29/09/2019 20:26

We had to repaint every paintble surface (floors, gloss, ceilings), rip out carpet and underlay, clean the tile underneath with a bleach solution, and lay fresh carpets. But in our case it was two dogs, and the carpet was utterly saturated in wee (and probably worse).

They did leave a little arrangement of air fresheners for us though. Grin

ThisIsAPun · 29/09/2019 20:27

Yes! We had the same problem.

-Wash all the walls/hardfloors using sugar soap
-Re-paint throughout
-Hire/buy a carpet cleaner
-Clean carpets again

Worked wonders for our house, previously occupied by what smelt like the entire Battersea dog rescue population!

SilentAndQuietLight · 29/09/2019 20:27

Repainted the walls, not the floors, obviously!

Rkay2 · 29/09/2019 20:29

We had to replace the carpets.......

whattodo2019 · 29/09/2019 20:32

Definitely pull up the carpets.
Re paint
Wipe down radiators and wood work with zoflora

I also use Milton on all hard surfaces

Alexis21 · 29/09/2019 20:33

As people have said you may need to replace carpets and underlay.

When you wash carpets do my use hot water as it seals in the smell of urine. Wash all soft furnishings and air the house regularly. Plug in air fresheners and scented candles also help

MatchaMuffin · 29/09/2019 20:34

They did leave a little arrangement of air fresheners for us though.

Tbh the smell of dog is so off-putting to buyers that we reckoned we saved several k on the purchase price, so we decided to just get a new carpet and consider ourselves still up on the deal.

sheshootssheimplores · 29/09/2019 20:34

I agree. If they’ve pissed on the carpet it will have saturated the underlay too. It all needs changing 🥴

bellabasset · 29/09/2019 20:40

I used to use Neutradol gel in every room to neutralise smells from our dogs. I think also trying the hepa filter would be worth a try. If not you may need to replace carpets

Iggly · 29/09/2019 20:42

Clean behind and between the radiators a

  • have a look behind them to check they’ve been done properly.

Also get rid of as many carpets as you can. Despite several deep cleans, the only thing which worked was binning the carpet and underlay.

Also bin any soft furnishings- curtains. Get rid.

We bought a house where the previous owners had a dog. The smell got everywhere 🤮

munchbunch12 · 29/09/2019 20:43

We had this. The only thing that worked in the worst smelling room was replacing the carpet!

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 29/09/2019 20:46

You need new carpets.

Streamside · 29/09/2019 20:47

Flash do a very good floor cleaner for dealing with animal smells, poundstretcher do it.

Span1elsRock · 29/09/2019 20:47

It's not just the carpets, it's the underlay. You need to rip the entire lot up, ventilate well while you're doing it, and clean all the floors with strong detergent like Jeyes Fluid then let dry before relaying the carpet.

I work in the soft furnishings trade btw. Had several customers with the same issue!

ShellieEllie · 29/09/2019 20:47

My son recently moved into his new home and the smell of dog was horrific. The only way we could get rid of it was to get rid of all the carpets. Then covered the floors with bicarb of soda and left for a day or two - still didn't get rid of it. Had to resort to a product from the pet shop that was sprayed over floors and scrubbed in. Smell then disappeared after a few weeks fortunately. Also had to clean behind radiators really well as the dog hair accumulated behind them.

Bobbelle · 29/09/2019 20:47

Linen fresh zoflora (the pet one) everywhere should get rid of it

CinnamonMentos · 29/09/2019 20:54

We have 3 dogs so it can get a bit whiffy, especially in winter when the windows aren’t open all day. I wash everything, including the walls, weekly with Zoflora. Make sure you get behind the radiators and do the skirting as well.

We have wooden flooring and a stair gate at the bottom of the stairs so none of the dogs get upstairs. That helps massively.

Tbh you can’t ever completely get rid of the dog smell from carpet. Your best bet is so rip it up, and the underlay, and replace with flooring. Much more hygienic

Jiggeriepokerie · 29/09/2019 20:55

I'm in the process of ripping up the entire flooring in the downstairs (carpets, underlay, hardboard, skirting) and replacing the lot just to try and get rid of the previous owner's smell of dog. I've just discovered that I'm going to have to replace the bloody door frames as well because the little sod peed up those too.

It's been over 2 years and I've tried everything so this is the last resort before I set light to the place!!

beargrass · 29/09/2019 21:01

Same as others, we got rid of all the carpet. It was the only way. We also repainted throughout.

St0pTryingT0MakeFetchHappen · 30/09/2019 06:02

Thanks everyone. Can't afford to replace the carpets at the moment and but I'll be in behind the radiators and try some Zoflora! At least it's concrete not wood under the carpets so that shouldn't smell!

We got rid of and replaced every carpet and bleached floors.
