We have found ourselves in a position where we can afford to do something with around £1,500 a month (not a brag)
Our son is 2, we live in a medium area of Leeds. Not the best, not the worst, but the location works for us with motorways. As a result to schools are just ok....
We went to look around a private school today, which is at the end of our road. It’s lovely, small class sizes etc etc he would be going into their pre school in September

Would you spend the money on:

  • Private school
  • Put our DS in state school and take him on adventures. E.g Alaska with all the trips, Far East cruises, lots of nature, not package holidays.
  • Put the money into a house in a better area & therefore better schools but both have a much longer commutes around the ring road everyday (gridlock & less time with DS)

Better area with better state schools for us.

Our DC have had a great education for 'free' so we have enough in savings to cover most university costs.

We've had some great holidays in the UK and some cheap trips abroad.

DS is at University now and has been to Romania, China and Zambia this summer. Plenty of time for exciting adventures when they're old enough to remember them!

Plus the better house in a better area will sell for more when you want to downsize at retirement.

Personally I wouldn’t think about private schools before 8. With that sum, I’d be overpaying the mortgage and investing some as long-term savings. That way you’d have a lump sum that could be used for private secondary or other big purchases like home improvements.

If you're looking at the school I'm thinking of I'm surprised it only takes 15 minutes to get to the M62! Do you go east or west on the motorway? Somewhere like Garforth might be a slightly better area if it works commute wise, and decent schools there.

Moving to Adel wouldn't give you a particularly good secondary school unless you are lucky enough to get in to Allerton High, you'd likely end up in Ralph Thoresby or Lawnswood. They're OK, but not great.
