tall dd

My dd just turned 10 and is already 5ft6 almost as tall as me ! I’m wondering where she’ll end, especially since her dad is 6ft8... She’s much taller than her classmates, luckily she doesn’t mind because her dad is tall, so she knows it is normal that she’s tall. I hope it will stay that way if she nears her teens! Any other mums with very tall dd?

DS here. He turns 13 next month and is already at 6ft3 or taller. It's very odd giving him a hug when my head comes to his shoulder

I don't have one, but I was one. I am 6ft 2 and reached my full height at about 13/14. I love being tall and it is much easier these days to get clothes and so on. I had to shop in the men's department as a teenager. But your daughter may not grow much if you are slightly shorter. My dad was 6ft and my mum is 5 11

Oneborneverydecade · 28/09/2019 19:58

George are you vertically challenged?

But actually YANBU

Bucatini · 28/09/2019 19:59

My DD is in year 7 and is nearly as tall as me (I'm over 5'7"). She loves being tall and it's very helpful for netball!

CatherineVelindre · 28/09/2019 20:01

DD2 is 16, and 6 foot.
DH is about 6' 5" and I am a shade under 5' 8".
Both my DC were always head and shoulders taller than their peers when younger, however while DD2 had a growth spurt aged 12 and grew 4 inches in one year, DD1 stopped growing at the same age and has stuck at a (for this family) tiny 5' 5". Everyone assumes DD2 is the older sister just because of the height difference which is galling to DD1 who is in her final year at university and still looks about 13.

harper30 · 28/09/2019 20:05

It's really reassuring to hear about positive tall girl stories!
DD is only 18 months but I worry about how tall she'll be already as she always been off the chart on the length percentiles. I'm 5'9 and DH is just under 6'9 so I always knew she'd be tall but I'm hoping it just won't be an issue for her. And to be honest since having this worry for her, I notice tall women everywhere! Often far taller than me, and it just reassures me.
I'm sure OP that she's much taller than peers currently but it will even out. I was always the tallest in my year (boys and girls) until maybe year 9 then most of the boys caught up.

littlehappyhippo · 28/09/2019 20:11

@lertanaal

That is tall for a girl of 10, but I don't imagine she will grow much taller than 5 ft 10 or 11.

I know quite a few men who are 6 ft 4 to 6 ft 6 and their offspring are 6 foot or less.

So don't worry. Smile

Don't spend much time on here do you? Wink

There are a myriad of subjects on AIBU every single day!

Alloftheboys · 28/09/2019 20:13

I was one of the tallest ones at school. I was always put at the back or on the end of the line for dance shows.
Ended up at 5’9’’ so taller than average but not very very tall.
I think it’s easier now to get tall clothes. Not many tall ranges in stores but lots of websites have a tall range.

Alloftheboys · 28/09/2019 20:14

Also when going out to under 18 nights if I wanted to wear heels I made my sister wear them as well so there were 2 of us tall girls together.

aLilNonnyMouse · 28/09/2019 20:16

I hit 5 foot 7 by the age of 11 with size 10 shoes. But I stopped growing then and I'm still the same size at 30. It was strange going from being the tallest in my class to watching all the boys slowly start towering over me but I got used to it.

Don't panic that she is going to be giant, some just do their growing early.

SneakySnackySquirrel · 28/09/2019 20:19

Age 8 and 5ft here. She already steals my clothes. Can't steal my shoes though, they are too small for her!

I was always tall but I stopped growing by year 7 and remained at 5'2". I hope she grows a little taller than that but it'll be what it is. She's quite happy.

amusedbush · 28/09/2019 20:22

I’m not tall (5’ 5 if I stand up really straight Grin) but I’ve been the same height since I was about 11. In the class photo when I started secondary school I was taller than a lot of the boys, then in our final year photo I’m in the front row, dwarfed by them Grin

Expressedways · 28/09/2019 20:23

I was 5ft5 at 11 and reached my fully grown adult height of 5ft7 at 13. I also had size 5 feet at 11 and it’s still my size today! I also think it’s fairly common for girls to stop growing within 2 years of starting their periods.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/09/2019 20:25

I was taller than my parents by end of primary school. Stopped growing at 12, then randomly grew another inch at 19. 5ft6 now.

My 8yo is 4ft6. We reckon she will stop growing at a similar age, but will probably be taller than DH and I,.. he's 5ft7.
6yo did originally show signs of being petite... But has gone from 9th centile to 65th in the last couple of years for height!

Rachelover60 · 28/09/2019 20:27

People are so much taller now than they were years ago, not unusual to see girls who are 5'10"-6'. They look really elegant too. However you don't when your daughter will stop growing. I was fully grown, height wise, before the age of thirteen. Everyone thought I was tall but I was average at 5'5".

Ohyesiam · 28/09/2019 20:32

Dd was taller than me when she left juniors and I’m 5’8”. She’s now 15 and has grown almost another inch. It’s great for school shoes, she actually wears them out rather than growing out of them.
Her dad is 6,3”.

be47 · 28/09/2019 20:36

I was 5'4 at 10. I am 5'5 at 26, and that extra inch didn't appear until university. I just grew early - I was always one of the tallest in my class until I went to secondary school, when I just stopped growing.

MrsMunchetty · 28/09/2019 20:42

Fantastic lucky girl! I say this as a family of shorties....i suspect soon you will become 'pocket mum' 😁 Look at her Red Baby book growth chart and plot her current height to get an indication of her potential. I'm would also ensure plenty of milk and yoghurt for the rapidly growing bones OP - each day.

lertanaal · 28/09/2019 20:45

A lot of reactions, thank you for that ! It is good to hear there are more tall girls around, at least she wont be the only one ! We really have no idea how tall she'll get, but she doesn't show any signs of stopping yet.

OP posts:
EmmiJay · 28/09/2019 20:50

DD is only 5 but I get the feeling shes going to be like OP's daughter. Gahhh! She was prem and doctors told me she might be small and slim most of her life...liars lol. Shes one of the tallest in her year group! Her dad is 6ft4 though.

piperatthegates · 28/09/2019 20:59

I'm afraid my experience with my tall DD isn't as positive. She is about 5ft 11 and absolutely hates being so tall. If she could shrink by about 5 inches she definitely would.
I feel guilty because I'm fairly tall and her Dad was 6ft5 so her being tall was pretty inevitable.

HeartvsHead · 28/09/2019 21:00

Girls generally slow down/stop growing all together when their periods start.

I was the tallest by miles then started periods at 11 and stopped growing completely. Was 5ft7 at 11 and still am!

PositiveVibez · 28/09/2019 21:06

I don't understand. Are there specific issues for girls who are tall?

I come from a 'tall' family and husband is tall. Not 6ft 9 tall, but over 6 foot and me 5ft 8.

DD is tall, but I've never thought about it as being an issue at all.

What's the problem?

Hope I don't sound like an arsehole, but it's a genuine query.

Shmithecat2 · 28/09/2019 21:07

I was 6'1 by the time I was 14. 6'3 at my tallest, but mild scoliosis has stolen an inch and I'm now 6'2. 30 years ago, being that tall was not fun. But as soon as early 20s hit, I loved it, and still do now. I wear 3 inch heels without a second thought. The range of clothes and shoes for tall girls/women now is infinitely better than it was when I was a teenager.
DS is tall for his age, which is expected as along with my height, DH is 6'4, and both our brothers are 6'5. There's not much that can be done when you're a tall woman, so you just have to style it out. Apart from the odd drunk bloke in a nightclub asking how the weather is up there, or giraffe comments, I've had nothing but compliments about my height. She'll be fine.
