What's best for the planet - getting rid of dog poo?

Hi

Just that really

Do I dump it in bin in its biodegradable bag, but then it goes into landfill?

Flush it down the loo - and then I waste water?

Put into council food/garden waste bin - or is it not eligible?

Include in our own garden compost bin - but that doesn't feel right...

Or????

I live in town - I know country folk just leave out in the wild to biodegrade alongside everything else but not really an option in town!

What difference does it make owning a dog or not? They are animals, if they aren't homed they would be stray and shitting all over the place , am I missing something?

FelicityFlutterby · 27/09/2019 19:59

Omg puzzled, I will never look the same way at a slug again!

FelicityFlutterby · 27/09/2019 20:05

Midnight

So, for me it's because dogs are bred for humans to buy. Pet dogs wouldn't exist if it wasn't for us breeding and buying them. Breeds like pugs and bijon frises wouldn't have occured in nature, and the number of dogs we now have would also not have occurred in nature.

We humans created the oversupply of dogs, so it is up to us humans, just imho, to gradually reduce their numbers by not breeding or demanding any more.

I'm with you though, on rescue dogs. I don't think they should be turned loose or anything. As long as they're spayed and neutered, if we only ever took rescue dogs and stopped breeding them, we would have far fewer dogs on the planet.

Some wormeries can definitely be used for animal faeces.

A. 100% most eco friendly way is biodegradable bags in the land fill bin.
B. You shouldn’t flush, not because of the water usage but because of the system not being set up to deal with dog poo pathogens
C. Same as B for compost. In fact no meat or meat eaters products should be used in compost you will use in the home environment on your fruit and veg etc. It won’t break down in the way it needs to.
D. Slugs do indeed eat poo BUT if you’re leaving it in your own garden, where your dog is, you don’t really want to encourage slugs. One of my dogs died from lung worm probably contracted from slugs.
E. A really good measure to take, regardless of your disposal method, is to reduce the amount of poo your dog does. My rescue Greyhound has gone, since I adopted her in February, from doing six-eight offensive Grin pops a day to doing two well formed, not particularly smelly pops a day. This is down to changing her from her previous diet of not great quality tinned food to a mix of steamed meat, veg and rice and a bit supplement. Every dog will probably be different in terms of what works from them, but getting her to this point has been a relief for all of us not just the environment Grin

Haha what Freshwater said but I’m too slow to type Grin

Chickens quite like dog poo & some dogs quite like chicken poo.....

FreshwaterBay · 27/09/2019 21:53

Well, delete my posts. But they were very factual about the effects of putting dog shit and other waste in our water system.

We drink that stuff after it has been recycled.

I guess some posters have high connections.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 27/09/2019 22:03

Eh? Missed that deleted msg but I was agreeing with you freshwater in case my post was misunderstood?

Fuma · 27/09/2019 22:10

Wow. There was nothing worth deleting in your posts. 😮😮

I think someone at MNHQ has issues with people criticising their furbabies. 🤣🤣 OR ... maybe they're an actual furry ??! 😮😮😮

FreshwaterBay · 27/09/2019 22:13

No, not at all Judas.

Mumsnet administrators can be so trigger happy sometimes. I know what I am talking about on water ecology. Had the stuff explained to me so many times by clients in that sector. I should have said something like "I just shudder" or "please do not let your labrador doo-ddo in the reservoir".

But no. Calling the humans into account in the most necessary terms to make them just think, is not possible here tonight.

Mumsnet moderators are sometimes like Jacob Rees-Mogg, slouching away the time.

FreshwaterBay · 27/09/2019 22:17

Thank you Fuma.

If I am wrong I would apologise. But, hey ho, let's see what they say.

Thing is. It seems OK to flush dog shit in the sewerage system. That is the bottom line. Take a stance on that, get your posts deleted. Trigger happy at least.

origamiwarrior · 27/09/2019 22:19

You might want to check whether your council uses landfill. In my county, all 'non-recyclable waste' goes for incineration (generating electricity for national grid).

Not that this answers the question of what to do with the dog poo!

Ontheboardwalk · 27/09/2019 22:20

Next door put it in their food/garden waste bin. I’ve seen bin men recoil at what I can only imagine is the smell when they open the lid. I've heard them scraping piles of it out of their garden at 6am before the food waste bin is emptied

The bin still gets emptied, you can smell the shit even when the lid is closed. I think they should refuse to empty it

There’s a dog waste bin at the end of our road. If they ever bothered to walk the dogs they could put their waste in the dog waste bin!

64sNewName · 27/09/2019 22:41

Next door put it in their food/garden waste bin. I’ve seen bin men recoil at what I can only imagine is the smell when they open the lid.

That is appalling. Surely it’s a hazard for the bin collectors? I’m not usually much of a Call the Authorities! mumsnetter, but if you are sure they are doing this, I would totally shop them to your council environmental team.

This thread though - so eye-opening. I’ve never been a pet owner but my dc really want a dog and I was weakening. This has strengthened my resolve to say no.

lljkk · 28/09/2019 08:40

omg, that is pure genius info about the slugs! Must tell every dog owner I know.

loveyouradvice · 12/10/2019 17:49

I'm off to buy a composter/wormerie.... yup, know it can't be used on things you eat but most of the garden is inedible.... flowers, shrubs and such like!
