Having read this I am struggling to understand why Naga is in trouble for answering the questions Dan asked her and why he hasn't been equally addressed for this comment;

Walker: Do you feel his use of that then legitimises other people to use this…

Munchetty: Yes. Yes.

Walker: It feels like a thought-out strategy to strengthen his position.

How have they come to the decision her comments were wrong but this one by Dan was fine? Have I missed something? Hmm

Apologies if this is really thick

I've just heard that Dan was included in the original complaint

Does anyone know the source of the original complaint- I did scroll through on my phone, it's quite hard to see if it was an internal or external complaint

I tried googling too. Apparently the person who raised the complaint dropped Dan from it...?

www.theguardian.com/media/2019/sep/30/bbc-racism-row-naga-munchetty-complaint-was-also-about-dan-walker

Guardian story here that Dan Walker was also complained about in the initial complaint.

It makes me sick that they probably suck their knobs at their inclusion of her and yet when her colour is too much, she gets shafted. One of my favourite presenters.

OriginofSpecies · 30/09/2019 18:12

The BBC’s editorial standards chief, David Jordan, twice suggested in interviews that the high-level executive complaints unit was able to consider only Munchetty’s role in the segment even though Walker made similar points and asked the questions prompting her remarks because she was the sole subject of the complaint.

“The simple fact is we haven’t had a complaint about Dan Walker’s role,” he said in one interview. “The complaint was about Naga Munchetty.”

But the Guardian can reveal that the original complaint from a member of the public described Walker as “very unprofessional” and accused him of “repeatedly expressing incredulity” that anyone could defend Trump over his remarks urging four Democratic congresswomen to “go home”. A second message after the first complaint was rebuffed also referred to Walker’s conduct.

The BBC did not dispute the content of the original complaints. But it argued that when the viewer was given the opportunity to appeal to the executive complaints unit, they were asked to clearly and concisely set out why they remained unsatisfied.

A spokesperson said this third version of the complaint “specifically focused on Ms Munchetty’s comments rather than Mr Walker’s, which is why this was the focus of the ECU investigation”.

Ironic that a complaint about presenters discussing racism has an inherent racist bias itself...

PotteringAlong · 30/09/2019 18:59

They replied to my complaint about Dan Walker.

Apparently we’re not talking about it again!

Dan Walker was right to ask her and did so respectfully. I think he was also aware he was 'talking over' a black women so asked her opinion. There were also lots of people trying to say 'go home' int racist. The BBC's ideas on impartiality are absurd. You dont get some conspiraloon to debate on equal terms with a scientist, and there are objectively wrong thing, like racism. Are they goin to start bringing in murderers to knife crime debates for 'balance?

It now seems the original complaint included Dan Walker but the BBC lied about that for some reason. I can only assume theyre terrified of the likes of Farage and the torys putting them out of business.

FelicityFlutterby · 30/09/2019 19:20

Well done bbc. Close the conversation down because you don't like it. I'm very off the beeb just now.

JorisBonson · 30/09/2019 19:26

Slightly side tracking from the actual point of this post, but I really dislike watching Naga Munchetty in the mornings. She's got a really nasty, mean girls way about her.

John1971 · 30/09/2019 19:27

The decision has just been reversed.

Patroclus · 30/09/2019 19:33

Im sure shess distraugt to hear that, Joris.

Actionhasmagic · 30/09/2019 19:39

It’s awful

AutumnRose1 · 30/09/2019 19:41

"Are they goin to start bringing in murderers to knife crime debates for 'balance?"

I have seen them earnestly interviewing a man convicted for knife crime, in order to let him put across his POV that there should be more lenient.

I'm no fan of the bbc but this is a real low.

HelloAgainYou · 30/09/2019 22:11

I've just seen the snippet again on the news and Dan is blatantly laughing. It wasn't a funny topic of discussion which makes me now think he was absolutely setting Naga up.

Userzzzzz · 30/09/2019 22:38

The bbc is annoying me at the moment with their approach to impartiality. If some crackpot (from no.10) announced that grass is purple, there would be equal weight given to someone arguing it was green and someone arguing purple (they’d find someone). There seems to be no attempt to make a judgement on whether the point is stupid or not- just reporting on it. Suddenly, the purple grass brigade seem credible because they’ve been on the bbc and they get more and more coverage.

sweetheartyparty · 30/09/2019 22:47

Were there no producers speaking to Naga and Dan whilst they were on air? Could they not have warned them to be careful of breaching guidelines when Dan first asked the question? They were just as culpable as well as Dan. I think Naga has been very let down

ChicCroissant · 30/09/2019 23:04

I wonder if Naga will move away from the BBC now, I wouldn't blame her!

BruceAndNosh · 30/09/2019 23:06

Both Dan and Naga referred to her 'not giving an opinion' so it's obviously a stock phrase used to avoid getting into trouble

Sunshine93 · 30/09/2019 23:29

^ this.

I have spent most of my life completely oblivious to both racism and sexism that is present in every aspect of life. Recently I have become more aware. The treatment of Diane Abbot is a really important example as is that of Meghan Markle. Neither of these women are perfect (who is?) but there are white women who fit a very similar profile and have not had a fraction of the abise. As for white male MPs or TV presenters well let's face it when are they ever held up to any kind of scrutiny.

I am a white female. I have nothing but admiration for any non white female who chooses to put herself in the public eye for this level of scrutiny. What an unfair world we live in.
