Having read this I am struggling to understand why Naga is in trouble for answering the questions Dan asked her and why he hasn't been equally addressed for this comment;

Walker: Do you feel his use of that then legitimises other people to use this…

Munchetty: Yes. Yes.

Walker: It feels like a thought-out strategy to strengthen his position.

How have they come to the decision her comments were wrong but this one by Dan was fine? Have I missed something? Hmm

They said this morning that they hadn't said anything about Walker because no-one had complained about him

So the bum hurt Trump supporters called in to complain about a woman of colour but didn't think to complain about a white male? I'm pretty shocked at this, it's almost like there is some truth to what she was saying.

PotteringAlong · 27/09/2019 13:36

Well, I’ve just complained about him. Actually, specifically I’ve complained that he hasn’t received the same treatment, having made it clear that I didn’t have a problem with what she said.

I’ve asked for a reply so we’ll see if I get one.

Lagatha · 27/09/2019 13:37

I love Naga, I think it's an outrage.
Listening to her interview with James Cleverley yesterday showed what a good journalist she is.

littlepeas · 27/09/2019 13:50

I was shocked by this. There is a glaring discrepancy in treatment of the two people involved!

megletthesecond · 27/09/2019 13:55

I'm angry about this too. Currently too angry to compose a civilised email to the BBC.

couchparsnip · 27/09/2019 14:00

I heard it at the time and was really moved. She said those comments 'go back to where you came from' were always rooted in racism. She had obviously experienced comments like this more than once snd was visibly emotional. Very powerful and a totally appropriate response to the question she was asked.

derxa · 27/09/2019 14:01

I love Naga I don't love her. In fact I find her irritating but than doesn't mean I find the reprimand completely unacceptable.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 27/09/2019 14:04

I’m another Naga fan, i think it’s dreadful that she was reprimanded at all...and i agree that if she was told off then dan should have been as well

VladmirsPoutine · 27/09/2019 14:05

Aside of the astonishing tone-deaf BBC response. Who complained? And what did their complaint consist of? "Minority woman expressed personal views of racism live on BBC".

Apparently BBC journos shouldn't express their personal views on any subject matter, vis a vis BBC's obsession with impartiality. But what therefore is the fair/impartial side of racism? Truly bizarre!

toomuchtooold · 27/09/2019 14:30

It's a hell of a situation for the BBC to put its ethnic minority staff into, to sit there and report, or listen while someone else reports the racist words of a racist arse, with all their white colleagues around them and they can't say anything, because impartiality. I feel deeply uncomfortable watching/hearing it, I can only imagine it's very unpleasant to have to sit through.

I also think that most people are going to read it not as impartiality but as tacit agreement. I know Godwin's law and all that, but really, if the Nazis were to show up tomorrow and start talking about the Vaterland and Lebensraum and all that gubbins, what would the BBC do? Just broadcast it all with not a whisper of criticism? It normalises this bullshit. You know, 15 years ago minor disagreements over fiscal policy were the most exciting politics got, that was normal, now we have the Tory party illegally proroguing parliament and Boris Johnson being under investigation for his links to a pole dancing receiver of government funds who had links to Steve Bannon and Milo Yiannopoulos and that's also normal. What the fuck?

toomuchtooold · 27/09/2019 14:32

Yeah and also, when did calling someone a racist become worse than actual racism? Even in discussions of fucking racism, white people's feelings about racism become more important than the feelings of people from ethnic minorities.

VladmirsPoutine · 27/09/2019 14:37

Not to detract from the conversation about Naga, as I think it's a very important one. But has anyone noticed that the BBC has gone entirely down hill over the years with it's obsession with impartiality resulting in false equivalence?

E.g. the vaccine discussion, they'll get a scientist/doctor to extol the brilliance in vaccine advancement, but their 'equal' is some nut-job who doesn't believe in the efficacy of vaccines. Indeed also the climate change discussion... like 99% of scientists agree on global warming, but for 'balance' they'll also invite someone who doesn't think the climate is changing. WTF is going on! This is our state broadcaster!

PrincessScarlett · 27/09/2019 14:40

I was watching when Naga made her comments. It followed an interview with a Trump defender and what the interviewee said was pretty shocking and it was obvious to the viewers that Naga was furious with her. Dan was also furious and I think it was right of them both to have a discussion on racism despite the BBC being impartial.

What is being reported now is being taken out of context somewhat and turning it into black woman punished for speaking out.

I don't think either Naga or Dan should be punished for challenging Trump and his supporters. To allow such views to go unchallenged is far more dangerous.

theendoftheendoftheend · 27/09/2019 15:02

Yes Vlad impartial my arse, but apparently that's only a problem that requires any kind of reprimand when it's a black woman!

Brefugee · 27/09/2019 15:21

So the bum hurt Trump supporters called in to complain about a woman of colour but didn't think to complain about a white male?

It's worse than that. I watched the show when it was broadcast and I retweeted it when the BBC themselves put it on their own social media (I'm pretty sure it came from them).

She was very clear that she wasn't saying anyone was racist, she said it twice IIRC. Also while I feel it is wrong that Dan Walker escaped criticism/punishment i also felt that he was so surprised by what the interviewed woman said, then noticed Naga nodding along which further surprised him into asking her outright if it had happened to her. And she was furious enough to answer. But professional enough to distance her comments from the interview.

According to the BBC they put it on their social media and it was on one of those platforms that the single complainant saw it and complained.

So remember next time we all complain about something and nothing is done. It only takes one...

Darjeeling54 · 27/09/2019 15:24

I feel the same way as Naga. The BBC are such controlling morons in this day and age. She should have not been reprimanded!!

Smellbellina · 27/09/2019 15:29

Well one person on this thread has complained about Dan so presumably the BBC are now bound to respond to that..?

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 27/09/2019 15:33

Apparently BBC journos shouldn't express their personal views on any subject matter, vis a vis BBC's obsession with impartiality

Unless you're Laura Kussenburg, then it's fine.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 27/09/2019 15:34

kuenssberg sorry

VladmirsPoutine · 27/09/2019 15:38

@MinisterforCheekyFuckery And indeed John Humphrys...

Who reported Dan? I wish to report him too and ask what reprimands he'll be facing.. can anyone point me in the right direction? Just googled the general complaints page but is there a more specific route? I agree with him, but would like to see what steps the BBC take to reprimand him too.

MrsGrammaticus · 27/09/2019 15:40

I thought she was very restrained and diplomatic...,,clearly an issue close to her heart, but so what? She's human. It's covert racism by the Beeb that she gets slapped down for articulating an opinion very clearly....how very dare she!!!!

FelicityFlutterby · 27/09/2019 15:45

Yanbu. It's a fucking disgrace. I hate what is becoming of this country Sad.

I totally agree that it is terrifying that anyone complained about it at all, disgusting that the complaint was only directed at her, a woman of colour and not the white man beside her.
It is ridiculous that she was reprimanded for it and I also think there is something terrible about the bbc having to be 'neutral' on blatant racism.

If you read comments on SM, you will see that many people seem to believe that the bbc is impartially in favour of the 'liberal elite'. Which is also completely ludicrous.

BruceAndNosh · 27/09/2019 15:51

If the BBC don't want any opinions from their journalists, they should make their news programmes 100% scripted.
I saw the relevant piece live and thought Naga was admirably restrained.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 27/09/2019 15:53

What does having a compliant against her upheld actually mean for Naga professionally?
Will she actually give a toss? (I hope not)

skippy67 · 27/09/2019 15:55

Anyfucker summed it up perfectly.
