To keep child off school

Morning,

My son has woken up before 5am and won't go back to sleep. Would IBU to keep them off school today due to tiredness? He's obviously not compulsory school age so wondered what would happen. He's exhausted poor boy.

I'd send him and tell the teacher he might be tired. Then he'll sleep tonight. Is it something he does a lot? Early waking?

CheesecakeAddict · 27/09/2019 05:38

No, it's not unusual for this to happen. I would just speak to his teacher and ask that if he looks like he can't cope, to call you or let him nap (is there a nursery attached to the school where he could join them for naptime). Either that or send him back to bed and take him in late.

No he generally wakes about 6ish so today is a one off. Went to bed at 7 last night. Our youngest woke him up. Tried to get both of them back to sleep but didn't work.
My oldest is a young school starter and gets very tired because he's always on the go.

No, send him to school. He will be tired and sleep tonight. Don't set at precedent.
Hes only woken an hour early.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 27/09/2019 05:45

He’s only woken 1 hour earlier, he’s unlikely to be “exhausted”

Send him to school he’s sleep tonight.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 27/09/2019 05:45

No way - you can’t reward him for waking up early. Only a few hours then it’s the weekend!

CroissantsAtDawn · 27/09/2019 05:45

Id send him.

My eldest would frequently have disturbed nights (sleepwalking, nightmares). I just warned the teacher that hed be tired

Cookit · 27/09/2019 05:46

My pre-schooler wakes at 5am or a few minutes before most mornings and still needs to go to pre-school. He’s often tired but he doesn’t seem capable of staying asleep later ...
I think you’d be U to keep off school just for that.

StateOfMind · 27/09/2019 06:00

No, you can’t keep him off because he woke up early! That’s just silly. He’s had 10 hours sleep. Less than he normally does but he’s hardly chronically sleep deprived. Send him in and if he’s tired he can lie in tomorrow.

Sirzy · 27/09/2019 06:00

A day off for waking up an hour early? Seriously!

Send him to school he will be fine

PumpkinPie2016 · 27/09/2019 06:05

No, you need to send him in. Just mention it to teacher.

Elodie2019 · 27/09/2019 06:07

He's woken up an hour earlier than normal? Agree that he's hardly going to be exhausted because of that!
What's he doing now? Has he gone back to sleep?

AlwaysCheddar · 27/09/2019 06:09

Send him to school.... can’t believe you’re thinking he will be exhausted!!

MrsMonkeyBear · 27/09/2019 06:09

Still send him in, just a bit earlier to bed tonight to make up for it.

My eldest has just started school and this morning she has also been woken at 5am by my youngest. She'd never be at school if I kept her off when this happens as it's an almost daily occurrence.

trotesio · 27/09/2019 06:10

You should send him in.

Assuming he goes to bed at half 6 / 7 - that's still 10 hours sleep.

If you did keep him off, the school would probably record it as an unauthorised absence and expect you to bring him in by lunchtime.

Oysterbabe · 27/09/2019 06:12

I'd send him.

treenu · 27/09/2019 06:18

Nonsense - send him in.

AbsolCatly · 27/09/2019 06:18

DD started jiffling around at 4 and didn't settle till after 5:30 she will be going to breakfast club, school and after school club - she will be tired but she will cope. Hopefully tomorrow she will sleep longer and then so can I :)

myself2020 · 27/09/2019 06:20

mine get up at 5 every morning. its fine. he’ll sleep well tonight

Russell19 · 27/09/2019 06:21

Send him in, it's only an hour sleep he's lost.

slipperywhensparticus · 27/09/2019 06:23

Mine got up at three he still went in to school I warned them so they made sure he stayed awake

Crunchymum · 27/09/2019 06:30

If he's more school age then there is no consequences (even school age don't get reprimanded for a day off!) But I agree with others, send him in!!! Its one day and he woke up one hour early.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 27/09/2019 06:39

An hour early to wake up and you want to keep him off school? I really wouldn't start that precedent

RainOrSun · 27/09/2019 06:40

If he was exhausted, he would gave gone back to sleep!
No way mine would be staying off school for waking early, as it was pretty common - hence me having been awake for over an hour while the rest of the house is still snoring - too many years of being woken at 4 something for the day!

my2bundles · 27/09/2019 06:56

No send him in. If you start this habit it will be difficult to rectify.
