Shall I go to this interview?

Posting here for traffic. Please be kind, I’m already down.

It is my dream job, going back to the level I was pre children (it has taken me 12,years of junior jobs to get here after taking time off after maternity leave. It is a managing position for plenty of scope for process optimisation (my strength) BUT I need to have knowledge of certain legislations I don’t know about. They must know I don’t have it as not mentioned in CV or application questions. I am required to do an hour presentation during interview of a topic that will be given to me on arrival.

Cons: My health is not good, I have been going through assessments for cancer for 3 months and although I had some positive news yesterday. I feel drained and not in the frame of mind to be able to concentrate properly. My stress levels are so high I have developed eczema, I don’t feel strong to take in such a big challenge.

I have a job that I love, that is also VERY stressful but I have done it for a few years and it has become too easy. I’m getting a bit bored and in need of a new scene.

New job would pay 20% more BUT, if I don’t do it well I may find myself unemployed in 6 months at the end of the probation period.

I am a divorced mum with single care of my son, no family around, just me and the amazing sprout who is a good teen but who I need to send to uni in a couple of years... on my own.

Would you go to the interview?

When is it? I would go.

OpportunityKnocks · 26/09/2019 08:21

Go! You haven't reached decision point yet. See how the interview goes and whether it changes your perspective on these issues

FactorFifty · 26/09/2019 08:24

Definitely go. If you don't get it, fine. And if you do, you can then decide if you want it.

Good luck!

purpleolive · 26/09/2019 08:27

Absolutely go. I was once told if you get an interview, they think you can do the job. Interviews are horrible, it feels like you're (understandably) trying to wriggle out of it. Give yourself this chance, you can decide if you should take it if you get it,

HRH2020 · 26/09/2019 08:32

You know what, I wouldn't. I would look for a new job but one that doesn't involve a lot of stress. Why heap more pressure on yourself when you don't need to?
Plus, just a thought - dream job before kids May not translate into dream job with kids.

Idontwanttotalk · 26/09/2019 08:34

Given your ill-health, I don't think I would attend. I hope your positive news was that you don't have cancer. I think I would concentrate on taking care of myself and getting my health sorted out.

You may be bored and stressed by your job but, if you land a job where you already know you lack knowledge and experience, you will no doubt experience additional stress. You've already answered your own question - "I don’t feel strong to take in such a big challenge."

You feel drained, can't concentrate and are so stressed you have eczema. Pressure from a new role you aren't quite up to will not help this.

Look after your health. When you are feeling well that will be the time to seek out the challenge of a new job.

WarshipWarrior · 26/09/2019 08:36

Go but you need to put the cancer thing aside for a moment and concentrate - do a lot of research and really go for it. Dont let potential illness be the reason you dont put your all into this and aren't successful because you'll resent yourself for that later. Just put that in a box for the next few days or however long until the interview- do an amazing interview and then if you don't get the job you'll know you gave it your all anyway. Good luck OP with both this and your diagnosis. Be wary of sick pay etc in your new job as well if you do get a diagnosis but hopefully you have some critical illness cover. But hopefully again you wont get that as a diagnosis!! Get well soon.

Hecateh · 26/09/2019 08:36

Definitely go.

If they have invited you for interview then you clearly have enough of what they need. It i highly likely that no one that has applied has all the requirements.

Learn what you can about the legislation and learn how to quickly find it online so that if it is needed during the presentation you can refer and link to it.

Learn something about the company, smile and show enthusiasm for the job and any learning you may need to do.

Everyone is nervous at interview so don't worry about that and don't be frightened to ask for questions to be repeated or clarified.

Idontwanttotalk · 26/09/2019 08:40

Btw, I don't understand the vote.

Does voting YABU mean YABU if you go to the interview or if you don't go?

Petrichor11 · 26/09/2019 08:42

Go to the interview. If you get offered the job, make the decision then, by which point you’ll have more details to inform that decision.

Good luck in the interview and with your health Flowers

Go to the interview. Even if it turns out the role is your dream job but the timing is wrong you get a good practise. Also if someone else is successful they may still keep you in Monday when the person moves on.

TheAlternativeTentacle · 26/09/2019 08:54

I am required to do an hour presentation during interview of a topic that will be given to me on arrival

An hour long presentation during an interview on a topic that will be given to you on arrival? Who the fuck does that to someone, a 10 min presentation on a topic given a week earlier is bad enough.

tolerable · 26/09/2019 09:03

go. yanbu ...but..if you know how meditate first.you need to calm down.google free hypnosis for self confidence..or whatever you feel your lacking. and..its only an iterview, you cant miss whatchu never had. good luck

ShartGoblin · 26/09/2019 09:08

BUT I need to have knowledge of certain legislations I don’t know about. They must know I don’t have it as not mentioned in CV or application questions

Go to the interview, they wouldn't have offered it to you if they didn't think you couldn't do the job. They will ask you about the legislation you don't know about so make sure you do your research. It's not about knowing everything, it's about demonstrating that you care enough about the job to learn.

There's a good chance the presentation will be about the subject, that's what I would do. It makes it really obvious which candidates have done no preparation. I wouldn't be expecting them to know much, just enough to make it clear that they have a pro-active attitude and that if I hired them, they would put the effort in.

IdiotInDisguise · 26/09/2019 09:24

Thank you people. I really appreciate your comments. Can’t go through them as soon as I wish as I am at work and in meetings most of the day, but I’ll come back around 6.

Just a couple of things to mention, I am not so nervous about the interview as I am of getting the job. It is the longish term stress if the learning curve that worries me (and the possibility of ending up unemployed if I fail. My current job is not bad and it is very secure so there is a good gamble there)

Yes, an hour presentation. I can wing it if I have the knowledge, I won’t without.

Interview is tomorrow.

The vote... am I unreasonable to want to miss this interview?

Thank you so much Flowers

Go! Give yourself a chance. Yes there will be a learning curve when you get the job, but there will be support with it.

BBBear · 26/09/2019 09:33

What are the prospects in your current job?

I think you should go to the interview because you don’t have to take the job even if it’s offered to you.

purpleolive · 26/09/2019 10:02

If you go to the interview your gut will tell you what to do (a bit airy fairy perhaps!) when I went for my last job I didn't realise how much I wanted it until after the interview, seeing the place and the people, and then the dreaded wait afterwards thinking I hadn't got it. A bit like the scene with Rachel and Phoebe and the pregnancy test in friends lol.

mauvaisereputation · 26/09/2019 10:10

If knowing about legislation that you don't currently know about is necessary, surely the answer is to read up on this legislation before the interview? I would think that any interviews are going to be looking for current awareness in your area, so even if you don't get this job, I'm sure time spent preparing won't be wasted. Good luck!

MereDintofPandiculation · 26/09/2019 10:12

If you're uncertain about a decision, chose the route that keeps your options open. If you go for the interview, you have more time to decide whetehr to take the job (and a bit more knowledge to aid that decision). If you don't go, you are closing down your options.

WickedLemon · 26/09/2019 10:13

If you’re not nervous about the interview then go to it.

After that - if you’re offered the job ask to go in, meet your colleagues, get a feel for the place, work culture, staff morale, etc, before you accept it.

Alexel · 26/09/2019 10:21

If you don't ask, you don't get.
If you don't try, you WILL fail.

In general my life motto is go for it, what's the worst that could happen, they say no? No big deal. If no is a huge issue, my father made me go into shops or hotels and ask for the most outrageous things and get denied. I have zero fear of "no".

Its a high reward low risk situation. Reward is you get the job, risk is you don't. You're back to where you are now.

You can do it OP, and if it goes badly, find the next place. You'll be fine. And if you don't get it, it's nothing to do with your self worth. Its always worth a try. You'd be surprised at what the outcome is sometimes Grin Flowers

WhoKnewBeefStew · 26/09/2019 10:22

Go! If you get it you can then decide if you want to take it or not. If you don't get it then see it as a good thing... either way you'll prob end up regretting it if you don't go.

Good luck Thanks

ToelessPobble · 26/09/2019 10:23

I misunderstood the poll. From your OP I thought you were asking whether you would be unreasonable to go for the job and voted yanbu.
