To message a friend who's just signed up to a MLM?

GunpowderGelatine · 25/09/2019 22:26

An old friend announced on FB today that shes "joining a fast growing marketing company" and "launching my own online business to help people get healthy and make money from home". The MLM alarm obviously went off in my head.

On further investigation - aka snooping on the profiles of the bots who've commented "welcome to the team Hun" - it's for Valentus coffee. Aka Goodbye solid food, hello diarrhoea.

I'm really surprised she's been sucked into this. She's a senior nurse and her husband runs an accountancy firm. You think one of them would see through the bullshit?

WIBU to message her and tell her to stay away and if she wants me make money try matched betting? I do it and make on average £150 a week - sometimes as much as £200, and rarely below £100. Also I don't have to sell anything, answer to an "upline", have to recruit people, send cringey messages to friends and family or post "inspiring messages" on Facebook, give some of what I make to someone else or spend my Sunday's trying to flog a load of crap at a craft fair.

Obviously I'd leave the list bit out, but I would send the Elle Beau blog about MLMs to her. Is it too patronising to message her??

It IS surprising who gets sucked in. My intelligent MIL got sucked into one here in Oz. SO stupid.

I would message her but she's probably entrenched in the hope that she can make this work.

DrReed · 26/09/2019 02:35

Is this an ad matched betting?

AlliKaneErikson · 26/09/2019 05:03

I was really surprised to see someone share a post for a local lady who is evidently now doing the whole Arbonne thing. She keeps referring to the fact that she is (or was) a doctor, even putting it as a hashtag at the end, as if to ‘validate’ it further. She does the stereotypical ‘my life is amazing, I am there every hour of the day for the kids and warm loads of money’ type posts too. Amazing who gets sucked in!
I’d be tempted to mention the Elle Beau blog before it’s too late!

PianoTuner567 · 26/09/2019 05:47

You can try but she probably won’t listen. I’d leave out the matched betting stuff for now though, not really relevant.

neighbourhoodwitch · 26/09/2019 05:50

Wouldn't message her but consider a chat?

neighbourhoodwitch · 26/09/2019 05:50

Agree MB fab but more of a conversation, after seeing how a chat goes...

666onmyhead · 26/09/2019 06:00

Deffo an advert for matches betting ! Lol !

SinkGirl · 26/09/2019 06:21

One of my very smart friends mentioned to me that a friend had joined an MLM and she was thinking of getting involved and asked for my opinion. I was extremely polite and careful, but sent her a link to that blog and told her to be careful as there was a very strong chance she’d lose any money she puts in and damage her friendships.

After the first couple of posts of the blog she messaged me to say that it was exactly what she was experiencing and that she wasn’t going to proceed.

I was worried about pissing her off but so glad I said something.

avocadoincident · 26/09/2019 06:36

I wouldn't bother bringing it up as she in the heady honeymoon period of joining a cult. She'll soon come to realise that effort and money run in opposite directions within these scams.

Any of my friends who joined these things were normally doing it to fill a void or were sucked in when they were at their most vulnerable such as after a divorce

I might quietly 'hide' her on Facebook as she'll become very annoying in the short term.

GunpowderGelatine · 26/09/2019 06:45

I think people need to research matched betting before they think it's something people put out adverts for - bookies HATE matched betters. Who do you think I am "advertising" for exactly??

EleanorReally · 26/09/2019 06:47

a work colleague is now selling Arborne,
feel sorry for her
another Avon, is Avon MLM?

GunpowderGelatine · 26/09/2019 06:47

I just hope, above anything, that she doesn't lose money. Or weight for that matter, she's pregnant (and skinny anyway) touting these coffees.

I may wait until the inevitable recruitment attempts before I say something

OP posts:
GunpowderGelatine · 26/09/2019 06:49

@EleanorReally yes Avon is MLM but TBF I've never met a pushy Avon rep and the products are very good, personally I don't mind supporting them so much.

Arbornne is terrible. I spent about £20 on an oil that exacerbated my DD's eczema

OP posts:
EThreepwood · 26/09/2019 07:09

How are you making £100+ a week? I'm barely pushing £50 Confused

slashlover · 26/09/2019 07:09

Avon is not a MLM, people buy products and you work for the company. You're not instructed to get more people to work for you.

OtraCosaMariposa · 26/09/2019 07:16

Too late, I'm afraid. She's already in. She's already spent the money on joining and stock. She will be desperate to make that money back at least.

I just hope, above anything, that she doesn't lose money.

99% of people lose money. Or make zero. It will take her months or a year to realise this though.

TileFloors · 26/09/2019 07:17

Reported.

GunpowderGelatine · 26/09/2019 07:18

@EThreepwood

It's generally easier when big sports games are on as the offers come rolling in but general I:

  • open at least 1 new account every week
  • Join all of the bet clubs I can for guaranteed weekly bets
  • place 2-3 bets every day for a free bet
  • use the Casino offers too. Sometimes from this I get nothing and sometimes it can net a generous amount
  • use oddsmatchers to find the best odds (usually over 100% retention) to make sure I'm getting the best matched bets
OP posts:
GunpowderGelatine · 26/09/2019 07:18

@TileFloors eh? Why?

OP posts:
GunpowderGelatine · 26/09/2019 07:19

Again who do people think I'm advertising for??? There is no company that runs matched betting. It's all down to individuals.

OP posts:
GunpowderGelatine · 26/09/2019 07:21

Also @EThreepwood there's a matched betting thread always going on in money matters that's really helpful

Solihooley · 26/09/2019 07:35

Ergh. Valentus seems to be the craze round my way too. It’s so annoying seeing all these young mums get sucked in. They will lose money there’s no doubt about it. Also I’ve noticed that they go to lengths to keep the actual name of the ‘company’ quiet, is it even legal in the U.K?

ChocChocButtons · 26/09/2019 07:35

Don’t think matched betting sounds much better tbh.

Solihooley · 26/09/2019 07:36

As for messaging her, I don’t think it would do any good. It’s one of those things people have to find out for themselves. Once they’ve been got it’s too late.
