Couple adopt 6 year old Ukrainian child who turns out to be 22 year old adult sociopath

I saw this online today and it's blown my mind, what are your thoughts?

In summary, a couple adopt what they believed to be a 6 year old Ukrainian child who was later found to be approx 22 after bone density tests etc.

The 'child' reportedly tried to hurt the family, doing things like trying to push the mother into an electric fence, pouring bleach in drinks and standing over people in the night threatening to kill them. The girl was found out to be an adult, diagnosed as a sociopath with a severe mental illness, and put on medication.

The family moved to Canada leaving the girl behind and have now been charged with abandonment, even though the girl is legally an adult.

I read about this yesterday. I don't understand how they can be charged when they left her after she had been ruled an adult and her birth certificate had been altered, and they still got her an apartment and paid her rent to make sure she was okay. Also if she managed to live on her own for 3 years without incident could she really be 8? Very strange story.

How could an adult possibly be mistaken for a six year old girl, whatever their stature? What were they even doing in an orphanage at that age?

I read that a bone scan recently has put her at the age she was presented as when they adopted her.

But the mother said she had pubic hair and breasts and periods at 6. Notbsurebifbthere couldnbe another explanationita not clear if she is a child or not at the moment.

Sounds like the film 'Orphan' I watched lol. Family adopted what they thought was a 9 year old girl from an orphanage, she tried to kill them too, then it came to light the little girl had a type of dwarfism and also a sociopath. I thought it was just far fetched fiction

I've read several articles and there is conflicting statements in almost all.

Surely the adoption agency or previous adopters (who reportedly relinquished care of her before the Barnett family took her in) would have something to add to the case?

She clearly looks like an adult woman to me in that first picture.

I’m having some serious reading comprehension failures here as I just noticed they adopted her in 2010

As far as I know the film is actually based on Barbora Skrlova - an entirely different scenario. The last I saw, since the bone scans that 'aged her'at 22, she has had scans consistently placing her at her claimed age - e.g as a child

From the Sun article it sounds like they adopted a child who turned out to have psychiatric issues and extremely challenging behaviour and haven't been able to cope with that. None of the behaviours listed are unusual in a severely traumatised child.

It says the parents told the adoptee to say she was 22 and had the birth certificate altered themselves? The bone density issues could be complicated by achondroplasia (sp?) and it doesn't sound like the doctors have been conclusive about her age.

The story is very unclear - I guess more will come out.

They changed her age legally wtf. This makes no sense.

Even this article does NOT claim that she had bone scans aging her at 22. It claims that bone scans sometime between 2010 and 2012, when they abandoned her, showed she must have been at least 14, when in 2010, a doctor said she was eight. I imagine the parents chose to say she was 22, because that’s when you are “completely” legally an adult in the US (over the age of 21, when it is legal to do things like drink and sign all legal documents and age out of social care for children with special needs that go beyond 18). The whole story is very strange, though, agreed.

The article I read last night said she had scans that put her at an adult age. Think it was around 20.

They then set her up in a flat and paid bills for her and left. She disappeared at some point.

Then a more recent scan had put her at or near the age the orphanage said she was.

Fuck knows what's going on.

I think the latest is that the most recent scans have put as a child. The couple are very odd. The whole story is very odd. The mum is some kind of parenting guru author or something, yet they left a small child to fend for herself in an apartment when they moved away. All rather weird! Poor little girl.
