For re- washing clothes if it rained on them?

Whenever I put washing on the line outside and it rains I just HAVE to bring it all in and put it in the wash again because it makes me feel like the clothes aren't clean now. I know it's only rain water but it just makes me feel uneasy. I've done a wash and put it outside and within an hour it started to rain so I brought it in and went to put it in the washing machine and my friend looked at me like I was mad and said "just leave it out there, it will stop raining at some point and dry." Am I being silly or do other people do this as well?

No. Never. There really is no need.

LaCerbiatta · 23/09/2019 18:44

It's so wasteful though. We should all be thinking of the environment Sad

I suppose it depends on how clean your rain is! If I lived in the middle of a smoggy city then I might rewash. But I don't, so it either stays put till it stops raining, out gets brought in and hung up inside.

herbsmokedchicken · 23/09/2019 18:46

Depends how wet it got really, we don’t have anywhere to dry outside so I don’t have that specific issue but if my clean hair gets wet in the rain, it’s not clean anymore once it dries, it always looks and feels dirty after.

SilverCrushedVelvetX · 23/09/2019 18:47

I had worded that abit wrong. It had chucked it down for a good half hour to be honest. If it was lightly raining I would of brought it in and put it on the airer. If it really rains in it then it just doesn't feel clean anymore to me. I am bonkers I know.

Unless you are The Wicked Witch of The West YABU.

lazylinguist · 23/09/2019 18:48

What do you feel uneasy about? Do you also feel uneasy if you're walking around in your clothes and it rains on them? Confused

TheMustressMhor · 23/09/2019 18:48

People used to collect rainwater in barrels in order to rinse clothes in it. It makes your washing softer.

YABU and bonkers.

JumpyLiz · 23/09/2019 18:50

No I leave it. I always think it’s quite nice when it’s been rained on Grin

AgentProvocateur · 23/09/2019 18:50

I live in the west of Scotland so my washing can be out for days getting rained on, then dried, then rained on... It’s an unbelievable waste of resources to bring it in and wash it again. Shock

messolini9 · 23/09/2019 18:51

Batshit!

This month, I had clothes on the line for several days, as every time they started to dry it rained again.

They smelled even cleaner & fresher than usual.

Rivergreen · 23/09/2019 18:53

I wouldn't necessarily rewash unless it's been splashed or marked, but I don't understand people who can leave their washing out for days until it's dry! If it's raining, surely you bring it in?!

I'd run out of clothes if every wash took a few days to dry...

Orangedaisy · 23/09/2019 18:54

Our washing machine runs on rainwater from a giant tank under the garden. ALbeit with detergent and it’s filtered to keep out bits of leaf etc. But definitely not worth rewashing just as it’s had a rinse in rainwater-all our washing gets that!

MrsMoastyToasty · 23/09/2019 18:54

Considering how hard the water supply is in my area it's like having a soft water rinse if it gets rained on.

Cookit · 23/09/2019 18:56

I have clothes and nappies outside on the line that have been rained on for a few hours now. I’m sure they’ll be dry tomorrow and I’ll bring them in as normal.
It would be unnecessary, wasteful and a waste of time to re-wash.

Buddytheelf85 · 23/09/2019 18:57

What specifically worries you about rain water touching your clothes? What do you think might be in it?

IAmALazyArse · 23/09/2019 18:58

You kniw it's weird otherwise you wouldn't even ask here.

Here you go so you don't have to waste water in a future

No way,lifes to short.

Lifecraft · 24/09/2019 12:14

I suppose it depends on how clean your rain is! If I lived in the middle of a smoggy city then I might rewash.

The rainwater in a city will still be a lot cleaner than the crap we get out of our pipes.

OP is utterly bonkers.

DadCanIHaveAZedgie · 24/09/2019 12:25

It's bonkers, but I'd have probably rewashed it too. I am being unreasonable, I accept that.

Asta19 · 24/09/2019 13:13

I live in London and if my washing gets rained on, it's covered in little black flecks, it's gross. I think it's to do with all the grime and pollution here. So definitely it would need washing again. If I lived rurally I probably wouldn't bother.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 24/09/2019 13:29

No I wouldn't rewash. If it was very wet I would spin it off.
I live in London too and I don't get black flecks Confused, maybe a different part.

MediocreOmens · 24/09/2019 13:30

A little bit of rain wouldn't bother me but I find my washing smells odd if it is soaked by rain and dries again. A sort of swampy smell. I do understand the environmental implications though and we are very careful with water in general.

RhiWrites · 24/09/2019 13:31

I hung out my washing on Saturday. This morning I gave up and brought it in to dry. I’m not rehashing it. As far as I’m concerned it’s been triple washed already!
