For re- washing clothes if it rained on them?

Whenever I put washing on the line outside and it rains I just HAVE to bring it all in and put it in the wash again because it makes me feel like the clothes aren't clean now. I know it's only rain water but it just makes me feel uneasy. I've done a wash and put it outside and within an hour it started to rain so I brought it in and went to put it in the washing machine and my friend looked at me like I was mad and said "just leave it out there, it will stop raining at some point and dry." Am I being silly or do other people do this as well?

No way, that's really wasteful.

I keep a post-it note next to my washing machine with a dash for every load of laundry - I try to keep mine to a minimum.

lynsey91 · 24/09/2019 13:33

If it only get a little rain on it I don;t wash it again but if it pours I do

FrauHaribo · 24/09/2019 13:37

I am lucky, around here the met forecasts are surprisingly accurate so my laundry rarely if ever gets wet.
I agree with above, I wouldn't leave my laundry in the rain, without a spin it would take forever to dry.

If more than a couple of drops, I rewash white work shirts, things like that, the rest would be fine.

NobodyKnowsTiddlyPom · 24/09/2019 13:42

When my DC were in cloth nappies a few years ago, I would deliberately hang them outside if it started to rain. When you wash clothes in the washing machine, there's always a bit of a build up of detergent residue. Hanging the nappies in the rain got rid of that residue and made them much softer. I still do it with towels now.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 24/09/2019 13:49

Every time there is a laundry or similar cleaning-based thread, I think that surely, this time, nobody can out-batshit MNers with crazy cleaning regimes.

But here I am, proven wrong again.

FrauHaribo · 24/09/2019 13:49

I still do it with towels now.

how long does it take them to dry after?!
I have always selected an extra-rinse with baby clothes, but then everything goes on a spinning cycle. Even on a very windy day, it would take ages to dry otherwise.

IncrediblySadToo · 24/09/2019 13:49

No & you don’t ‘HAVE’ to either, it’s a CHOICE you make.

All that’s happened is that they’ve had an extra rinse!

It only smells weird if it gets soaked more than once and takes days to dry, if it did then I’d re rinse it. But that would be rare this time of year

AiryFairyMum · 24/09/2019 13:51

We use harvested rainwater in our washing machine and loos. You'd be horrified if you came here!

ifoundthebread · 24/09/2019 13:52

I used to do this when I line dried my clothes, no idea why but once it's rained on it got washed again. 🤷‍♂️ Now I put everything in the dryer

randomusername · 24/09/2019 13:53

YABU.
I don't know anyone who does this!! Consider it an extra wash cycle from Mother Nature

Topseyt · 24/09/2019 13:55

That is VERY wasteful.

You are being totally ridiculous.

manicmij · 24/09/2019 14:01

People hanging washing outside used to always turn it inside out. This help keep the proper side clean as there was a lot of dirty pollution from factories, coal fire chimneys (homes and industry). Not much in the way
of vehicle pollution. However if ut rained, washing was done again as considered to be dirty from all the dust and dirt. Suppose if you live in a dirty atmosphere at least a rinse would be worthwhile. Otherwise don't bother.

starfishmummy · 24/09/2019 14:01

I would and have done so - but depends on whether it's gone gritty/got bits on it. I dont necessarily give it a full wash - just a rinse or the quick cycle.

gamerchick · 24/09/2019 14:05

I might stick it on a rinse and spin if it's soaked and sopping but otherwise just bring it in and dry inside.

bluebellclose · 24/09/2019 14:09

@SilverCrushedVelvetX

I never do this.

DH would though if it were up to him.

He is so fussy and hygiene obsessed and wouldn't eat any food item if it's a single DAY out of date. Also, whenever I have dropped a sock or any item of clothing of his on the patio outside - OR on the kitchen floor, he refuses to wear it until it's been rewashed.

Both the kitchen floor AND the patio are clean FFS!

Batshit!

If I do drop anything, and he doesn't see it happen, I will never tell him!

And no, there is no need at all to re-wash anything if it gets rained on.

Butttons · 24/09/2019 14:11

I live in London and rewash if my clothes have been rained on. They tend to smell a bit rank if they've been darked on hanging out too long

Legomadx2 · 24/09/2019 14:12

I wouldn't bother. Unless you live in a very polluted area and the rain is grey maybe?

1forAll74 · 24/09/2019 14:22

What a strange thing to do,you must just like putting the washing machine on, and wasting water and electric. The water in your machine comes from rain.

MerryDeath · 24/09/2019 14:51

definitely U

SteelRiver · 24/09/2019 14:56

We just bring it in and let it dry indoors. I wouldn't wash it again. Seems like an awful waste of water (if you're on a meter) and of electricity.

Aprillygirl · 24/09/2019 15:07

It's water, the very stuff you use to get the laundry clean in the first place, only purer. You are wasting time and resources. You are being very silly, now go to your room and think about what you've done.

chemicalelephant · 24/09/2019 15:40

I purposefully leave my nappies out in the rain to soften them because rainwater is purer and less hard than the tap water...

Waveysnail · 24/09/2019 15:44

Nope. If it's none stop rain then I spin it and tumble dry

NearlyGranny · 24/09/2019 15:48

I just call it nature's final rinse, buy I live in a place with lovely clean air from two coasts.

Look at the older trees where you live and if the trunks are growing ferns and lichen on their shady sides, leave your washing. If they're bare all round, re-wash.

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 24/09/2019 15:52

Mine has been out since yesterday, I was in and out of the house and everytime I went out our trained, it's bright and breezy now, should be dry soon!
